Professor Summers greeted his students from behind his desk as they entered the classroom, gesturing for them to take their seats. "Good morning, and welcome back to Transfiguration. For those new students who have transferred over, or the old ones who are simply just forgetful, I'm Professor Aeon Summers. Now, let's get started. As I'm sure you all remember, first year was centered around Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration. We're completely done with that branch. This year we're moving on to something more complex; Animate to Inanimate. It's a lot more challenging than what we've done so far, but I'm confident that most of you won't have too much trouble." The wizard glanced around the classroom, happy that the majority of them had seemed somewhat capable from the previous year. There were a few who were rather disappointing, but he couldn't have a perfect class.

"If you all remember back to first year, we went over Transfiguration terms and their meanings in your first lesson. If you can't properly recall, Animate to Inanimate transfigures something living into something that is not. For example, a hamster into a rock, or a flamingo into a lawn flamingo. Of course, as always Transfigurations are permanent, and transfiguring an animal into something else indefinitely is usually against Ministry regulations, with some exemptions. You will be learning how to perform Animate to Inanimate Transfigurations, but it is for educational purposes, and all of them will be reversed. Anyway, as with Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration, you're still using the three-tap method, so nothing changes there."

He stopped to make sure everyone was following along, continuing when he was sure at least most eyes were on him. "A few people have some difficulty understanding how Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration works. We don't take the life away from the animals, it's more like we suspend it. They still have some small degree of awareness and thought, but are incapable of movement, speech, seeing or hearing. If you were to turn a person into a couch, they essentially are a couch for that period of time. They're very barely aware if you were to sit on them, yet aren't able to do anything but provide you with comfort."

Summers got to his feet and walked around to the front of his desk as he spoke, suddenly feeling uncomfortable to be sitting in his own seat. The reality of it was that anything had the potential of being something else. A book thrown into a fire may very well have once been a human, transfigured into an object as a punishment or prank. Which brought him to his next step of the lesson. "There was once a time where Transfiguration was used to punish dark wizards and other rule-breakers. Before Azkaban, wizarding authorities had few places to hold wizards and witches. As such, they resorted to changing them into a stationary figure. Statues. Their bodies were turned to stone and became their prisons." His face was far more serious as he spoke. There were depictions of this punishment in old books around the library, and it wasn't pleasant. "Wizardkind has always had questionable methods of punishment. This method has not been used in a long time, but it wasn't that long ago that we still had Dementors roaming Azkaban. Thankfully now we have a less cruel system in place. Which brings us to your homework." Summers waved his wand toward the board, the chalk quickly scrawling their task onto its surface before they were dismissed.
Homework
In your opinion, does transfiguration make a good punishment? Why or why not? (Just a few sentences detailing your characters opinion.)

Noel entered the classroom for Transfiguration. He was interested for the subject, since it seemed really cool what the professor could do and showed them previous year. But it also seemed like a subject where he needed to prepare a lot for. And not that easy. He noticed being the first in the classroom and he was a bit suprised by that. Being on time was not his real talent actualy. He found a spot in the middle of the classroom and listened to the professor as he started with the lesson. He paid attention to what the professor was saying because this year would become more difficult as he already thought. It was logical that it would be. There was some lecture it seemed so Noel put some parchment with him to take notes if he heard something what seemed important to write down. The couch part really seemed strange. He could not imagine how it would be if he would be one and people sit on him. Noel took notes of the stuff about punishment because that seemed normal that it would be. There were people who made use of things, and he thought that was really cruel. He wanted to defeat those people and punish them, he hoped to become an auror one day. And that was why he actually had to do his best in lessons for sure. Noel writed the things down and than left the room as they could.

Daintree wasn’t sure at which point he’d lost the renewed argument with his father but he had and he found himself at Hogwarts once more. It was just going to have to be his life for another six months and maybe he could try again because actually engaging within the school and making himself more activity was something he’d do but for just stuff to do. School had been rather boring without much to do in it. He had been bored a lot in the last semester, filling his time with other things just hadn’t quite cut it in most instances, so he needed something extra. He needed to be more engaged if he was to survive the school for another six months. Second year would be easier too, so he would worry less about classes, now he knew the basics of magic, that had to make everything else easier, surely. The slytherin was getting himself together for the class, getting his books and putting the most minimal amount possible into his bag while still being able to get by. When he was ready, he headed out of the dorm and to class.
Daintree walked into the transfiguration classroom and took a spot in the room. He hoped they wouldn’t be too theory heavy in this class, god how he disliked how theory heavy it was. But it seemed as he took out his notes and books that it would remain fairly theory heavy again. He listened as the professor told them they were done with the branch of transfiguration they’d had in the semester prior and would be moving on to a different set of it. He nodded but didn’t take any of it down, not really seeing the point in writing any of it down. Dain hoped the rest of the lesson would pass the same but the professor began explaining what those sorts of transfigurations were, and then moved on to tell them how they suspended life. He was a little surprised that the wizards had once used it as punishment, that instead of prison they were put into a position that suspended their life. It was questionable for sure. The professor gave a little more information and then brought the lesson to a close, dismissing them with some homework. He took a note of it, but Daintree wasn’t sure that he would do it.

Eric wasn’t exactly happy to be back at Hogwarts, but he didn’t hate it either. He quite liked some things about the school, and some of the kids there. Not many, of course, most of them were awful. But Nova was alright, and Eric had surprisingly missed her a bit during the break. He was also glad Connor was here now, though he had hoped he would be in Gryffindor with Eric. Not because Connor was particularly brave, but because Eric could keep a better eye on him if he was nearby. Thankfully, Hufflepuff seemed to be mostly full of soft kids, so Eric didn’t worry too much. He just hoped their stupid cousins would leave them alone.

Eric was annoyed when he saw the had Transfiguration with the Slytherins again. He would have liked not to see Sydney's stupid face for a while. He made a point of knocking into her desk as he passed her, before he found his seat. Professor Summers started one of his very long lectures, and Eric sighed in disappointment. The Gryffindor took out parchment and quill to take notes with, even though the lecture was pretty boring. He didn't understand why anyone would want to turn something alive and animated into something lifeless. What was the point? And why was there so much explanation about something so simple? He was kind of interested in the part about punishment for dark wizards, but he knew that would never happen these days. Some dark wizards probably deserved it, though. Eric was pondering this as the lesson ended. He left the classroom on his own.

Aisa was surprised by how easy it was to return to Hogwarts. She had grown to know the school a lot over the past year, and had to admit she had missed magic quite a bit when she had been home during the break. Aisa was glad to be back. She wasn't the most social person, but she was still happy to see her classmates and Sully, who she supposed was her friend. On top of that, she looked forward to resuming work for the yearbook, something she had enjoyed a lot last year. She looked forward to seeing what new things she would learn about the magical world too. It was still all pretty new to her, even with her brother and cousin filling her in on stuff.

Aisa didn't mind Transfiguration. Any class that actually taught her magic made her pretty happy, and she was interested in what they would learn as they got older and the magic got more complex. Professor Summers liked to talk, but at least he usually said interesting things. Aisa took her seat in the classroom and took out parchment and quill so she could take notes. They would be learning about Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration, and Aisa took notes as the professor explained more about this branch of magic. She was glad to hear they didn't take life away from animals when they did this magic, though she did wonder if a person that had been turned into a couch against their will would agree with that statement. Aisa took notes for the rest of the lecture, and was surprised by the information about the spells being used for punishment in the past. That sounded horrible, and was glad that didn't happen anymore. When the lesson was over, Aisa left the classroom with her things.

Professor Summers had kicked off his lessons the previous year by showing off his animagus ability so anything short of that would be a let down. Olivia was disappointed to walk into the classroom and find the man in his normal human form. The Slytherin took her seat and listened to Professor Summers as he briefly recapped what they learned the previous year and began talking about their topic for the semester, animate to inanimate transfiguration. The more the professor talked about the more disturbing the concept seemed to her. Creatures turned to inanimate objects were still aware despite, for example, having been turned to stone. That was creepy and certainly couldn't imagine it being done to a person. When the lesson ended Olivia put away her notes into her bag and made her way out the lesson. She couldn't help but think the semester wouldn't be as fun as she hoped if they would be turning creatures to stone.

Zeke was intrigued to see what a new year of Transfiguration would bring after an interesting first year. He made his way into the classroom passing Professor Summers who was sat at his desk, nothing would beat the mans introduction in their previous year when he had begun the lesson in dog form. Zeke was intrigued by the notion and wondered if that was something he'd be able to master later on in his school career. In the meantime, Zeke took his seat to begin another new semester, he listened as Professor Summers began talking about animate to inanimate transfiguration, turning alive creatures into inanimate objects, it sounded weird, really weird. Zeke tried not to dwell too much on the idea as it creeped him out especially once Professor Summers told them the creatures were still aware. Zeke took notes on the professor's lecture and when the lesson was over he packed away those notes and made his way out of the classroom.

Because she was the youngest in her family, Tres always felt as though she was playing catch up. Her older siblings were always one step ahead, and now that she was at Hogwarts, Uno always knew more spells than she did. It was frustrating to say the least, and she wanted to prove to her sister and herself that she was just as good as the rest of them. It would teach them all to underestimate her. Entering her first Herbology lesson of the semester, she hoped she do better in this one than she had last year. As she took her usual seat in Transfiguration, and got out her parchment to write some notes, Tres was a little disappointed it was only going to be another lecture today. She was half staring out the window as the professor was talking, because it was hard to stay engaged when she was just listening to him ramble on. She stole a small grin towards one of her housemates though, and wondered whether everyone found the lessons as fun as she did. Once it was finally over, she realised she hadn't really written much at all, but packed away her things and headed back to the common room, hoping that she was going to survive this year.

Sully was a little disappointed when he walked into the transfiguration class and saw Professor Summers wasn't a dog again this year. It had been a fun way to start classes last year and Sully had been secretly hoping the professor would do it again some day. He was equally disappointed when Professor Summers got straight into teaching them stuff. It was their first week back, didn't these teachers know they needed time to adjust to being at school again? Sully didn't know how he was supposed to learn under these conditions, listlessly taking some notes as Professor Summers talked. Transfiguration was pretty cool in theory, but all this talk of rules and laws and stuff often went over Sully's head. He preferred to just cast spells, not learn why they worked and stuff. It was like with tv's. Sully didn't know why they worked, but he knew how to use them.
The stuff about old timey punishments was pretty crazy though, sounding like something the bad guys would do in a movie rather than like things the government and police and stuff would do to you. He groaned though when Professor Summers lead that into a homework assignment. Why did he always want them to write about things they had to think about. Packing up his stuff, Sully made a point to try and ask Aisa what she thought about the punishment stuff later. She usually had smart ideas he might be able to use.

Transfiguration was a good reprieve from some of the more boring things they learnt in their other classes. It was nice to feel challenged once awhile, and Sydney hoped they'd be continuing that trend this year as they had last year. Sitting down, Sydney gasped when someone knocked into her desk as she was organizing her notes, causing her quill to stutter along the page. Looking up furiously she scowled at Eric as he made his way past hissing "Eric Holland, you troglodyte!" At his retreating back. Resolutely refocusing as Professor Summers began the lesson, Sydney made a point to not let her annoyance show on her face. She wouldn't give Holland the satisfaction. It was hard not to muse about how useful some of the punishments described in the lesson might be right now, though Sydney agreed they were pretty archaic and wouldn't want them in use bar a few notable exceptions. She wondered idly if Professor Summers had ever learnt or tried some of the more frowned upon applications of transfiguration before, the temptation to know if you could had to be there. As the lesson finished up, Sydney made a note of the homework, looking forward to arguing what she could in her paper, before leaving the room, scowling at Eric as she did.
