Transfiguration 1:1

To the first years entering the Transfiguration Classroom for the first time, the room appeared devoid of any authoritive presence. No professor waited to greet them by the door, which had instead been left open with a note telling them to enter and take their seats, nor did any await them at the desk located toward the back of the room when they walked in. Instead, a large husky sat in the center of the room, dressed in what could only be described as robes tailored for a dog, with a cloak fastened around its neck in place of a collar. Its bushy tail idly flicked behind it as it watched the children enter, its eyes showing a little more awareness than the average pet. Once it seemed like everyone was present, the canine got to its feet and leapt toward the professor's desk, it's body shifting in the air to take on a more humanoid form, and its enchanted clothing magically lengthening and twisting to fit his new shape. Professor Summers landed on the edge of his desk, now himself once more. "Transfiguration." He started, looking across the sea of eleven year olds with a bright smile. "Is a very powerful branch of magic capable of changing almost anything from one thing to another, whether it be a quill into a spoon, or a person into a dog. Like you've just seen."

Aeon got to his feet and wandered back to the center of the classroom where he'd originally stood. "Good morning and welcome to Transfiguration. I am Professor Aeon Summers, your teacher for the next few years. I will be providing you with the tools and abilities that are an absolute necessity for each and everyone one of you as capable witches and wizards. The other subjects pale in comparison to the power transfiguration holds. Your only limits here is your imagination. You will learn everything from manipulating, conjuring and even vanishing the very matter that makes up our physical world." Summers stopped to withdraw his wand, whipping it toward the blackboard behind him. Immediately, the inanimate chalk was imbued with magical life and floated up to start scrawling across the board.

Types of Transfiguration
  • Inanimate to Inanimate
  • Inanimate to Animate
  • Animate to Inanimate
  • Animate to Animate
  • Switching
  • Conjuring
  • Vanishing

"Now, some of you may not be familiar with all of the terms written here, so we'll begin the day with some vocabulary. Take notes if you feel you need to, but it's all very easy to remember. Let's start with inanimate. I'm sure everyone knows that inanimate refers to something that isn't mobile, not at all capable of movement. However, it extends beyond that in this context, to mean something that isn't living, for example a rock, or a chair. Buildings, furniture, it's all inanimate. Animate on the other hand, is the opposite. Anything living. You, me, your pet goldfish. Even the grass we walk on. Simple, right?" Summers looked across the rows of faces, hoping they were keeping up. It wasn't a difficult concept.

"Now that we have those key terms out of the way I can explain what the combinations on the board mean. Let me know if you need me to slow down at all. It's all just really exciting stuff, even for me. First of all, we have inanimate to inanimate transfiguration. Simply put, it's changing one thing that isn't living, into another thing that also lacks life. This is easiest to do regarding objects of the same size to begin with, like so." Summers waved his wand once more, transforming a random students seat into a comfortable armchair. Waving his wand again, a vase in the corner of the room became a small teacup. "As you gain more experience, you won't need to worry about retaining the same general size. Inanimate is the best to start off with, as the target does not move and lacks the complexity of living creatures. Which brings us to inanimate to animate."

Another wave of his wand, and the cyan quill sitting in its inkpot on Aeon's desk transformed into a chirping bluebird, its feet coated in black ink. It fluttered its wings a few times before taking flight, circling the room a few times. "As you see here, we are capable of changing something without life into something living. Don't be fooled by it though. The living creature you create lacks a soul and is only alive through you. True life is something we cannot give." As he finished speaking, the bird reverted to a quill and floated slowly back down toward the floor. "That there is simply untransfiguration, something returning to what it once was. But it is indeed possible to turn something such as a bird into a quill through animate to inanimate transfiguration. I'm sure you all know by now that it means turning something alive into something that isn't. Of course you don't kill the targeted creature, but merely halt its life for a short time."

The wizard stepped forward and retrieved the quill from the floor, glancing at the clock overhead as he straightened back up. "And finally, animate to animate changes a living thing into another living thing, such as a guinea pig into a rabbit, or a human into a toad. A favourite among fans of muggle-stereotyped witches. Unfortunately, that's all we have time for today. In the following lessons we'll be doing more theory, which I know sucks, and you all want to start learning spells straight away, but the reality of the situation is that you can't. Transfiguration isn't like Charms, or Defense Against the Dark Arts. You don't say a word and hope for the best. You need to understand Transfiguration before you can even begin to perform it - otherwise, you won't accomplish even the most basic spell. Understood? I don't want to hear any groans or complaints. See you guys later." Summers finished, gesturing for them to leave once they were done.

Please ensure you've read over the classroom policy before posting. If you are taking this class and have a professor of your own, please be sure to read the section that applies to you.

Jingyi was rather surprised to walk into his first Transfiguration to find a Husky which reminded him an awful lot of his own dog Cho sitting at the front of the classroom. He almost went to pet the dog, homesickness suddenly squirming in his stomach which he simply tried to push down. Instead, he quietly sat down in one of the empty seats and waited for the Professor to arrive. But it seemed as though the Professor had been there all along as the Husky suddenly transformed from a dog and into a person. While he had heard of people being able to turn into animals, it was not something he had ever actually seen with his own eyes before. Instantly he was listening as the professor started to speak, but his interest did start to dwindle as the lecture seemed to just go on and on and on. By the end of it all, Jingyi was actually struggling to keep his eyes open and not just doze off. It was only the sound of them being dismissed that woke him up, blinking a couple of times before he stood up and quickly left the classroom. Maybe next time they would learn some spells.

Xinyi came into class, surprised that there was a dog sitting on the desk. He took a seat by his brother, pulling out his parchments and quill. Transfiguration was supposed to be a difficult subject, and he figured that meant a lot of lectures. He jumped, startled, when the dog in front turned into a man. Xinyi shook his head, and started taking notes. He could see Jingyi dozing beside him, and he knew if he wanted his brother to have any chance in this class, he would need to keep good notes. He gathered his things as they were dismissed, deciding to make a study guide later for his twin.

Maisie was excited to be back at school. She was glad to see the other students, and she couldn't help but want to make better friends this semester. She skipped into class, sitting up front. She was excited to see a puppy. She smiled brightly, cooing a bit and pouting as the puppy didn't come to her. Her eyes widened as the puppy turned into a Professor. She smiled brightly. That was so cool! The lecture was easy to follow, and she kept a few notes, but she followed along really well. She smiled as they were dismissed, wondering what it would take to be an animagus herself. It must be really something to turn into other animals.

Akihiro wasn't sure that he liked being back at school. He missed his sister, and he felt like he had finally been making some progress with his father. His father was, of course, still much too sentimental for his liking. But he had more respect for the man now. He settled in as he came into class. There was a dog sitting up front, and he couldn't imagine it was there for a frivolous reason. He was wrong, however, as he realized that it was the Professor. Though he supposed it was a good way to catch the attention of kids.

Akihiro kept quiet, more withdrawn than usual as he took notes for the class. Transfiguration seemed to be very straightforward. He took careful notes. It was probably a good idea to keep notes of this class. He gathered his things as he was dismissed and took his leave.

Evie couldn’t help but really enjoy her time at Hogwarts so far. There were a lot of nice and fun people there, despite the fact that some of her classes hadn’t been as fun as she hoped. Luckily, Evie had even more classes to try out this semester and she couldn’t wait to attend them. She quickly, and a little disorderly, packed her new textbooks into her backpack and headed to her classes hoping that they were going to be really fun and worthwhile.

Evie entered the Transfiguration classroom, her eyes widening at the dog at the front of the room. She quickly made her way over to it, patting it around the head. "Oh aren't you just so cute?" she said, squeezing its fluffy cheeks. She wondered why there was a dog in the classroom. She took the closest seat at the front, hoping she could be one of the first to interact with it if that was what they were going to be doing. As the dog then turned into a human, and in fact their professor, Evie's cheeks suddenly turned a shade of red. "I'm so sorry." she whispered, burying her face into her hands. She had just called a professor cute. Much of what the professor said throughout the lesson pretty much went out of the window at that point. She was quick to leave the classroom at the end of the lesson, having never felt so embarrassed in her whole life.

Seamus walked into the transfiguration classroom and immediately noted the dog. He didn’t think that was very appropriate but everything in this school was just odd so he took his seat and just watched as the professor appeared, well, the professor’s human form appeared. He thought it was a rather showy way of piquing everyone’s interest in transfiguration and as the man got started Seamus was beginning to realise why he’d done it like that. Since the man’s lecture seemed to never end. Which he objectively knew it had to at some point. He took the odd note, but it was so much information he wasn’t able to keep ahead of it and write it down. The slytherin was thankful when the lesson was wrapped up and he was able to just pack up and head out of the room.

Eston had heard mixed things about Transfiguration class from his older siblings. Some loved it, some hated it. Now it was Eston turn to figure out how he felt about it. He knew his sisters had been telling him 'tall tales' about this professor, how he was a dog. Eston pretty much thought they were joking but could not be sure. His sister, Zee, normally did not lie to him like that. But as the Gryffindor boy entered the Transfiguration classroom to see a dog in a robe, he knew that his family was telling the truth. Or they got the professor involved in the joke. The boy thought eying the dog as he sat down.

It turned out that his sister's were not lying. Moments after the professor appeared in well professor form instead of the dog that was once there. Wicked cool Eston thought as he watched the professor more closely now. The lecture was a bit dry; lots of terms. But it definitely helped keep his focus to see various items such as a vase turn into a teacup or a flying bird. The bird was obviously his favourite as he saw it flew about the room after shaking off it's coat of ink.

The subject itself sounded awesome! Eston hoped he would be able to do some of those tricks (well Transfiguration magic) really soon, but the professor dismissed the class instead. They would be doing theory for awhile, which was disappointing. Eston was not one to want to wait, but it's not like he had a choice. If he wanted to one day turn an ink well into a bird, he would have to learn the theory too. At least Zee is good at this class. I have help if I need it. He thought knowing that his one sister would be the only one he ever asked for help with. Normally Eston liked to do it on his own. Before leaving the room he quickly jotted down the notes on the board in his messy handwriting. He threw everything back in his bag once finished, the paper getting a little crumpled already. It didn't matter much to the young Gryffindor. Class was over. Now he had some free time as he ventured off into the castle corridors.
