Third Years, Lesson One

Landon was very excited to be teaching his new batch of third years after a fun year last year looking after the Mandrakes. It was definitely a challenge for some of them, but they had done it, and Landon couldn't be more proud of them for learning such a new skill. The man confidently stood at the front of the Herbology greenhouse with a smile on his face, hoping that they would enjoy their lessons this semester.

Once all of the students had entered the classroom and taken a seat, Landon began to speak to the class. "Good afternoon class and welcome to your third year of Herbology!" Landon exclaimed, smiling at his students. “For those of you who don’t know me, I'm Professor Carter and I will be your permanent professor until the end of your fourth year. Today's lesson is going to be rather informative and I deeply apologise for how boring it's going to be. Lucky for you, next lesson will be much better. But for now please sit as I give you a lecture." Landon watched as a couple of the third years moaned and turned around to tap his wand on the chalkboard behind him which began to write dot points about different countries and famous herbologists.

* China is the most populated country in the world. They are most famous for Herbology.

* Chinese herbologist, Shennong wrote the first Chinese herbal medicine book which contains 365 herbs and their uses.

* Each country has their own philosophy and spiritual context regarding the way they do Herbology.
"Please copy down each of the dot points. They will all be useful for the exam at the end of the year and I've simplified them for you all." Landon paused and smiled at his class, preparing himself for what he was going to say next. "The main leading country in Herbology is China. Herbalism dates back to the Mesopotamia but China still uses herbal medicine till this day. There are also some countries that practice Herbalism but their muggle government doesn't really approve of the idea. Africa, the Americas, India and Indonesia are among other leading countries that still practice Herbalism. Though, in today's era, muggle Universities, and not just Wizarding schools, offer a course in Herbalism." Herbology linking to the muggle world was always what made the young man happy. He was always interested in the links between the muggle world and the wizarding world and was glad to teach his students what he knew.

When the lesson ended, Landon waved goodbye to his students as they packed up their belongings and exited the classroom. He wasn't too happy with how boring the lesson was for the students but he knew that if they listened to the content that they would all get good marks in the exam which was what he was hoping for. Next lesson they would be doing a lot more things which Landon was exceptionally excited for.

River had grown attached to her mandrake the previous year. It was almost a little unnerving entering the Herbology Greenhouse, not seeing them on the tables waiting for them. The Green haired girl tried not to let her expression look as she felt. It was not the professor's fault the Mandrakes had been shipped to St. Mungos. It was their purpose, even if it was a rather graphic one. Maybe they would get a new plant to look after this year. The young Slytherin hoped as she took her seat in the Greenhouse, taking out her notebook and pencils. The Professor was one of the few teachers that allowed them to use 'muggle' writing utensils. It was much easiest, she had to admit.

The lesson began as the professor apologized for the boring information. Most first lessons were rather dry with introductions and little coursework. That was fine by River though. She copied the notes on the board as she listened to the lecture. The young girl made sure to jot down a few more notes as the professor spoke. It was a topic she was not well aware of. She often learned about the muggle medical world, given her mother's profession, but she rarely heard about how plants can serve the same purpose.

Herbology Lecture (Lesson 1-Professor Carter)

The lecture was a short one today, however interesting enough. River had never really thought about Herbalism as such a popular thing. It was always the 'crazy' parents that sent their muggle children in with peppermint oil for headaches. But maybe there was so much more than that. Apparently that was only to be seen as they would cover it in future lessons. Today's was over though. River reread over her notes quickly, before placing them in her bag. She waved goodbye to the professor before leaving the Greenhouse. Instead of going back to the castle, the young Slytherin decided it was time to spend some time in the fresh air. She took a seat by the lake, taking out a textbook to read as she enjoyed the rest of her day off.

Rune had grown to love Herbology. It had become almost a nostalgic feeling entering the Greenhouse. It was familiar. It reminded him of home, of his mother and her own garden. Rune felt comfort as he entered the Greenhouse. He was excited to see what the professor had in store for them this year. They certainly had learned so much so far, dealt with some much, including the mandrakes. Rune tried not to think about that now though. He wanted to have a happy feeling, as he took his seat in the classroom, not sad about the outcome of the last year. This year will be just as fun The young Hufflepuff boy thought as he turned his attention to the professor.

Today's class was a lecture. They were talking about Chinese herbalist, as well as herbalists around the world. Rune made sure to take some notes, especially those that were displayed on the board. They had to be important if the professor had 'wrote' them on the board. Rune copied a few more notes down as the lesson went on. He was not quite happy that they only took notes today. Unlike his other classes that involved mostly magic, Rune wanted a practical lesson. There will be some Rune thought optimistically as he gathered his things upon dismissal. The young Hufflepuff boy left the Greenhouse, wondering magical plants they would focus on this year.

Branson had been looking forward to this second semester, mostly because of his electives. The electives he’d picked he’d been excited for but none more so than the ones this semester. The young ravenclaw was very much looking forward to what they would be doing in this class and what they would be doing in general. He was getting himself together, tidying up all of the things he’d haphazardly un packed when he’d gotten back to school. The holidays had been nice, a good amount of time to spend away from his schooling and to spend time with his sisters and his mum. He saw his dad often enough at school that he wasn’t so bothered with that, though it was still nice. The ravenclaw was looking forward to his sisters joining him in the next year, he didn’t think either would join him in ravenclaw but he wouldn’t dislike it either if it did happen. The ravenclaw was getting the last few things into his bag before he packed up his things and headed out of the room. He was looking forward to the day very much so, so he was excited to get out of the dorm room and be going to his class.

Branson walked into the herbology classroom and took the same spot in the room as he had in the years prior. He took out his notes and books and placed them down in front of him as the professor got started, introducing himself, somewhat needlessly, but he nodded as the professor told them that they’d be doing something boring, but Bran never minded boring since that was just code for lecture. He pulled his notes towards him and began writing down the three things that appeared on the board and then what the professor went on to further explain. With that the lesson was brought to an end and Bran was able to pack up his things and head out of the room.

Pixie arrived in the herbology classroom and took her usual spot in the room. The back of the room, as always. She looked to the professor as the man reminded them of who he was and then then told them they’d have a lecture and then the next lessons would be better. She wrote down what appeared on the board but didn’t get all of what the professor then said. SHe wasn’t that quick a writer. But the professor then wrapped up the lesson and she was able to pack away her things and immediately leave the room.

For some reason, Lucie felt a little more reluctant this semester to be going back to Hogwarts than previously. She wasn’t getting along too well with the people in her grade, and had most likely picked up a reputation that she didn’t mean to. She didn’t mind this, but it did make it a little harder to make friends, which her twin brother somehow seemed to be much better at than her, despite him being much more shy. It was a little disappointing for Lucie, but she tried not to let it get to her too much. After all, she had classes to distract herself with, as well as Accio, and would try to just focus on them instead. The Slytherin packed everything she needed into her backpack before heading out to her classes.

Lucie entered the Herbology greenhouse and took her usual seat. She liked this class a little better than others, and had actually enjoyed her second year where she had to look after a whole mandrake. She wondered what they would be doing this year and if the course would start to get any harder (if there was anything harder than mandrakes). The professor started the lesson quickly, announcing to the class that he would be lecturing them that lesson and to be prepared to take some notes. Lucie happily took out her writing equipment, glad that they were being lectured for a nice change. The professor barely lectured them, so Lucie listened her hardest as he spoke. Soon enough, it came to an end and Lucie was happy with the notes that she had collected and hoped that next lesson they would be able to do something practical.

Louis was happy to be going back to Hogwarts and attending classes again. He was pretty satisfied with the grades he managed to get last semester and was hoping he could keep it up. He thought maybe it had something to do with how many friends he was making and his involvement in the new club. It was definitely making him feel better about himself and he was glad that he came up with the idea to join it and get himself out there more. For now, Louis had classes to attend, and so he placed his backpack over his shoulder and headed out of his dormitory so he could attend them.

Louis entered the Herbology greenhouse, smiling over at his Head of House before taking a seat. He liked this professor and was glad that it was his Head of House teaching him. He listened as the professor started, taking out his writing equipment and paying attention as the professor went over what they would be learning. It seemed very important and Louis was glad to be learning about it. It was definitely different to what they learnt in Defence Against The Dark Arts where they would potentially harm each other during classes. Louis admired the fact that they were learning about the hospital where everyone was cared for. He thanked the professor at the end of the lesson, looking forward to Herbology this year.

Indi wasn’t sure what this year would hold for her in Herbology but she was sure it had to better than taking care of the nasty mandrakes. They had been a chore to deal with and while she normally liked hands on things she was sure there had to be something better. She took her seat and waited for the lecture to begin. She wasn’t sure why professors kept introducing themselves as if they hadn’t had them for the last two years already and when Professor Carter apologized for the lesson being boring she sighed. Indi took out her things to take notes. In the end the lesson hadn’t been that boring and she was glad to have learned stuff during their first lesson of the semester. She was always disappointed when they covered nothing at all.
