Third Years Lesson 1

Professor Harrington was excited to see her Third Year students. Some she hadn't seen since their first semester of their second year which was over a year ago! She gathered up the room to look nice and tidy for the students coming up to her tower so late at night. She knew clutter would only hinder their studies if it surrounded them.

"Welcome back third years to another semester of Astronomy! I hope you are all ready for learning," she said as the students sat in their seats. She was glad it was the summer and bringing them out to the lawn wouldn't be as cold had she stepped in during the first semester. "I understand you are all excited about coming back but today we are going to jump right into learning. Please follow me out to the lawn!" She said while she gathered up the tools she would need to demonstrate for the students. It was about 11pm right at the beginning of January so she hoped they would all position their charts correctly.

"Star charts, these are what we will be studying today. Now, the idea of following the stars and their patterns is very old, I'm sure all of you are aware of that. They once were used to predict different times of the year, so you could plant crops and harvest them. But, they are very useful if you are traveling, and traveling by say broom, as you all are too young to apparate," Sarah said with a little laugh. Pulling out her star chart she held it above her head towards the sky. "Now, don't feel silly but this is how you'll aligned yourself with the stars. Face south and then hold the map up, so that the North horizon is towards your back. Should you want to face another way, say east," Sarah said turning herself in that direction, but not turning the map. "You'll want to make sure you turn yourself and not the map, so it always stays the same, not turning with you," Sarah said demonstrating as she turned the piece of paper above her head back in her hands so it was above her head the way it had been when she was facing south.

"Now try to practice finding constellations to relate to your position and then turn in another direction and do the same, you'll notice the sky has many more stars than are on your charts, so take care when trying to find the stars you are looking for in the sky and I'm here to help anyone who needs it," Sarah said hoping the students would get a hang of the star charts fairly easily. Most of the students seemed to do fairly well and she was pleased with them. Once the time for the lesson was ended she sent them back to their dorms without homework so they would focus on the charts during the week in preparation for the rest of the semester.

For some reason, Lucie felt a little more reluctant this semester to be going back to Hogwarts than previously. She wasn’t getting along too well with the people in her grade, and had most likely picked up a reputation that she didn’t mean to. She didn’t mind this, but it did make it a little harder to make friends, which her twin brother somehow seemed to be much better at than her, despite him being much more shy. It was a little disappointing for Lucie, but she tried not to let it get to her too much. After all, she had classes to distract herself with, as well as Accio, and would try to just focus on them instead. The Slytherin packed everything she needed into her backpack before heading out to her classes.

Lucie entered the Astronomy classroom, taking her usual seat within the room. She wasn't the best at this class but still always wanted to do her best in it. She listened as the professor began the lesson and followed the professor outside to the lawn when instructed. They were going to read the star charts and try and locate some stars in the sky. Lucie took her map and faced South, holding the map out in front of her and looking up at the sky above. She tried her best to locate as many stars as possible, writing them down as she went. By the end of the lesson, she was unable to find them all, but had written down quite a few that she hoped were correct. She made her way back down to her dormitory when she was dismissed by the professor at the end of the lesson.

Louis was happy to be going back to Hogwarts and attending classes again. He was pretty satisfied with the grades he managed to get last semester and was hoping he could keep it up. He thought maybe it had something to do with how many friends he was making and his involvement in the new club. It was definitely making him feel better about himself and he was glad that he came up with the idea to join it and get himself out there more. For now, Louis had classes to attend, and so he placed his backpack over his shoulder and headed out of his dormitory so he could attend them.

Louis made his way to his Astronomy class, hoping this year would be somewhat of an interesting year. Some of the class was a little repetitive and truthfully it sometimes made Louis tired, but he still tried his best in it nonetheless. He followed the class outside to the lawn when instructed and took a map that was provided. The class were told to face South and put their maps out in front of them, which Louis did with the others. It was a little bit of a difficult task, but Louis still tried as much as he could and hoped he had done a good job when the lesson finally came to an end.

Indi wasn’t sure why she still decided to take Astronomy. So far the class hadn’t really taught her anything she didn’t already know. Well that wasn’t entirely true. There were a few wizards astronomers she hadn’t heard of. Which annoyed her since it was because of her mother she knew so much about the stars to begin with. But that also meant it was an easy class for her and she could use the help with her busy schedule. She had made it all the way up to the tower only to be told to turn around so they could go out to the lawn. She had to hold in a groan and as much as she wanted to go stargaze she would have appreciated the warning before having to climb all the way up here. As they made it to the lawn her mood lifted slightly when they were given star charts to navigate by. She knew what they were but had never used one before and she enjoyed finding constellations and orienting herself by then. Indi was a little disappointed when class was over but she was feeling better about taking Astronomy at least one more time.

ordie was excited to be back at school again. Of course he always loved being home, but he also loved returning to his boyfriend and friends here at school. His eyes lit up as he saw the set up off the room. Waving hello to the Professor, he walked over and sat down in the front of the class. He was surprised that they would be leaving again so quickly, but he couldn't say he minded too badly. He followed the others outside, listening to the Professor.

Jordie felt excited, taking his star chart eagerly and working with it. It was a lot easier than he thought it would be, and he spent a little longer working than the others. By the time he had finished, he liked to think he had found almost all of the constellations on his chart. Smiling shyly at the Professor, he hurried along with them back to the castle.

Branson had been looking forward to this second semester, mostly because of his electives. The electives he’d picked he’d been excited for but none more so than the ones this semester. The young ravenclaw was very much looking forward to what they would be doing in this class and what they would be doing in general. He was getting himself together, tidying up all of the things he’d haphazardly un packed when he’d gotten back to school. The holidays had been nice, a good amount of time to spend away from his schooling and to spend time with his sisters and his mum. He saw his dad often enough at school that he wasn’t so bothered with that, though it was still nice. The ravenclaw was looking forward to his sisters joining him in the next year, he didn’t think either would join him in ravenclaw but he wouldn’t dislike it either if it did happen. The ravenclaw was getting the last few things into his bag before he packed up his things and headed out of the room. He was looking forward to the day very much so, so he was excited to get out of the dorm room and be going to his class.

Branson walked into the astronomy classroom and took a seat near the front of the room. He took out his notes and books but didn’t actually need them as the professor just brought them outside. He followed the rest of the class outside and then looked to the professor as the woman told them what they’d be doing. He took out his star chart and looked up to the sky when they were allowed to. He struggled quite a bit with it. He wasn’t sure if it was just his contacts not making it easy for him or if this was just something he wasn’t very good at. He tried his best with it, focusing and attempting to find the constellations but it took him more time than most. Perhaps this was just something he wasn’t good at. Eventually the lesson was wrapped up and Branson was able to pack up his bag and leave the room.

Pixie walked into the astronomy class and made her way to the back of the room. She’d only just managed to sit down when the professor then had them getting up and leaving the room. She waited until everyone else had left and then took up the rear of the class, she couldn’t quite make out all of what the professor was saying, being quite a bit at the back, but she was able to piece it together from what she did hear and from what she saw others doing. Pixie very purposefully made her way to stand a little off from everyone else and began using her star chart. It wasn’t too difficult, though she never excelled in Astronomy, she knew the stars and she knew how to find them. SHe was able to work away for the whole time with no issues. She headed back inside without another word.

River found comfort in Astronomy. She was not sure quite why it was this way. She knew she often snuck outside at home to look at the stars, if only to spend more time with her sister. This of course only annoyed her sister most the time who was only looking for some time alone. River never liked to be alone though. She just could not relate to that. Even so there were mixed signals, River quite enjoyed her little nightly outings, looking at the stars from her rooftop. Astronomy reminded her of that, plus so much more. Until Hogwarts, River never even considered this topic to be a magical one. It was nice to view it from a different perspective, much like night sky looking like a different perspective back home.

The young Slytherin girl walked up the stairs to the Astronomy tower. She took a seat in the front row, realizing that she was one of the last to arrive. She really did have to get her timing done better. But she wasn't late, even if by her standards she was. The young girl began to take out her note taking materials only to hear the professor usher them outsides. Yes Yes Yes River thought happily as she threw everything back in her bag and followed the professor outside to the lawn. Her green eyes stared up at the stairs with such love as she almost bumped into a few students as she was not watching where she was walking.

Once on the lawn, the Professor began to explain about star charts. River had never quite charted stars before. Honestly she was not even the best at knowing the names of them all, unless they covered it in class. But she was excited to learn. She took her star chart and watched as the professor demonstrated. It did look a little silly, holding up a piece of paper up to the stars, but River never quite minded being a little silly, even if her family often frowned upon it.

River held her chart up to the sky. She positioned herself properly, looking in the right direction, holding the chart up in the air to match the stars that she saw on the paper and those of the chart. It was a little mind-boggling at first, but River felt like by the end of the lesson she was getting the hang of it. The young blue haired girl was able to find quite a few of the stars and constellations that they had learned about previous years. She struggled a bit, but seemed to get her footing soon enough. She was definitely disappointed when the lecture came to an end. Packing her star chart into her bag, River gave one last look at the night sky, letting out a longing sigh, before going back into the castle.

Eoin didn't know why he was bothering with Astronomy as it had yet to teach him anything which would ever be useful or something he didn't already know. Well, he did know why he was taking the subject. Simply because it didn't involve doing magic and he needed to take more classes to actually fill up his schedule. That was the only reason. He wasn't really looking forward to the lesson, still less than pleased about how late it was actually held in the day. Even more so when they had to leave the classroom and actually go all the way outside. He already wanted to go back inside, but still listened to the Professor as she explained what they would be doing for that class. Sounded pretty boring, if he was being honest, but at least he could pretend that he was in some normal classroom doing nice and normal non-magical things for a bit. Which was something he was always going to take when he could. Any opportunity to pretend he wasn't at Hogwarts learning stupid magic. It was an easy enough task to follow along with. He already knew how to follow the stars and these sorts of charts from the times his dad had taken him out on his boat. At the end of the lesson, Eoin quick put his things away before heading back to the castle.

The main reason that Rune signed up on for Astronomy was too upset his father. He was finally making a stand, thankfully with the help of his mother, to take classes that interested him. Astronomy along with many other classes were frowned upon by his father, but Rune pushed. Even though this particular class was not his favourite, he wanted to take a bit of everything that his father hated. Astronomy was a great class, but Rune felt like he had other favourites. Either way, the young Hufflepuff was excited to enter the Astronomy classroom. He took a seat before being told they were going outside. Not a bad way to spend the class.

Rune grabbed his things and followed everyone outside. It was dark now with the star lit up with stars. Pretty amazing He thought as he grouped around the professor. Today they were working on star charts. That sounded pretty cool even if Rune wasn't exactly sure what it was. Probably what the name says a chart for the stars. duh.. come on do better! He thought, his head yelling at him to think about things more. Rune tried to push the negative thoughts away as he listened to the professor and watched the short demonstration.

The young Hufflepuff boy took his star chart. He looked up at the sky, holding the chart up. He felt ridiculous. His eyes glanced around. He was sure he was going it right, but why did he feel like he was the only one that looked silly. Rune tried not to let it get to him as he looked back up at the sky. He 'charted' a few stars before the lesson came to an end. The young Hufflepuff boy packed up his star chart into his bag before heading back to the castle.
