Arvel probably wasn't the first person who sprang to Analei's mind when she thought of the word 'party'. The closest thing to a party Arvel had ever attended was the Yule Ball, and on more than one occasion that had ended in tears. Still, it was her eighteenth birthday, and you only turned eighteen once. He had prepared well in advance of the day, spending his holiday allowance on any kind of decoration he thought would fit in his suitcase - and, of course, her birthday present. He had had to forgo a pair of shoes to make that fit, but he could live without them.

He checked his watch. It was almost seven, which meant he had about five minutes before Analei arrived at what he'd told her was a Defence Against the Dark Arts study session. He hoped she wasn't going to be disappointed when she found out it was actually a party. Adjusting the last strip of bunting, Arvel stepped back to look at his work. His heart dropped. The classroom was so big that the flimsy paper decorations got lost in it. Conversely, the unicorn balloon he'd tied to the back of a chair was much too big and would have frightened the daylights out of the four-to-five year old girl it was marketed at. His only consolation was that he'd managed to persuade the house elves to spare him some leftovers from the feast - though since dinner had just ended, he doubted Analei would be very hungry. He sat down and popped a cold cocktail sausage in his mouth. Maybe he should have just set up a study session after all.
