Today's defence against the dark arts lesson, where they'd watched a spider die by the killing curse had left a bitter taste in Ajax's mouth. He had never been one to mind with how animals were treated, of course he loved animals but he hadn't given a second thought if killing a spider or crushing bugs under his feet. He'd feel sad if a bird hit a window or when muggle vehicles killed animals, but only ever for a moment. Watching Professor Styx kill an animal in class had been different. It had felt wrong. He couldn't explain why it felt more wrong than torturing a creature but it did. Ajaccio had arrived at the great hall for dinner, sat down at the end of the ravenclaw table with a book about the unforgivable curses. He had filled his plate absentmindedly with the same food he tended to go for, but as he went to dig in he really looked at it. He'd taken some vegetables and some meat, but the sight of the meat on his plate made his stomach feel funny. He had never questioned eating meat, he'd been in places, areas where that had been the only option, tried so many different kinds that were customery to places. He had never had a problem with it, there was no issue with eating what meat was available. He'd been places, farms where he'd met an animal that had ended up on his plate, but he didn't know why the spider, being killed with a killing curse made him suddenly not want any of what he'd become accustomed to. He pushed his plate away and grabbed a new one, this time more carefully trying to pick meatless options available. Maybe he'd get over this once the freshness of the lesson had passed, time would tell, but for now, he'd maybe avoid the meat options at the table.
