Sixth Years: Lesson One

Professor Nakamura was excited to be back at teaching. He'd enjoyed his first year, and planned on enjoying his second just as much. Watching his students enter, he was glad to recognise returning faces from the previous year. Excellent. He gave a smile as they took their seats and stood from his seat to situate himself at the front of the classroom.

"Welcome back to another year of astronomy," he greeted cordially. "If you don't know me, my name is Professor Nakamura and I will be teaching you astronomy until you graduate." He made sure to look at each student as he spoke, wanting to keep them engaged. "But let's get straight into it, shall we? For our first class we will be delving into the subject of light. We all recognise light – but in this case we will primarily be thinking about this in the context of stars, which emit light.” He paused, making sure everyone was keeping up. “Light is a type of energy, and not all light is visible to the naked eye. For example, our bodies give off heat. This is called infrared, and is not something we can see but is a subsection of light nonetheless. Before you are some instruments that can see these frequencies – ah, light comes in frequencies, you see – of infrared. Please look through them and notice the different tones of light. Some are cool blues and purples, whereas your bodies will be more of a red and yellow.” Professor Nakamura waited while the students used the instruments, walking around the class and keeping an eye on the students, making sure they enjoyed themselves but didn’t get too silly.

“For homework, please look up the electromagnetic spectrum to get a better idea of the sorts of light we mean. Looking forward to seeing you all next week, class dismissed.”

Attendance post is fine.

Elio entered the astronomy classroom, a mix of curiosity and nerves evident on his face. As a new sixth-year transfer, he felt a bit out of place but was determined to make a good impression. He found an empty seat near the middle of the classroom, set his bag down, and took out his notebook and a quill. Listening attentively to the professor, Elio jotted down key points in his notebook: Light - stars - emit light - energy - infrared - frequencies. He glanced around to see the other students engaging with the instruments placed in front of them. Following suit, Elio picked up the device and peered through it, fascinated by the different colours and the new perspective on light.

As Professor Nakamura walked around the room, Elio took the opportunity to ask a question. "Professor, is it true that different stars emit different types of light based on their temperature?" with the professor's response, Elio nodded and continued to explore the different tones of light through the instrument, marvelling at the reds and yellows emanating from his classmates' bodies and the cooler blues and purples from the surroundings. When the Professor mentioned the homework assignment, Elio carefully wrote it down: Look up the electromagnetic spectrum. He made a mental note to visit the library after classes to get a head start on the research.

As the lesson concluded, Professor Nakamura dismissed the class. Elio felt a sense of relief and accomplishment as he packed his things. Before leaving, he approached the professor. "Thank you, Professor Nakamura. I enjoyed the lesson," Elio said politely, he then left the classroom, feeling a bit more confident and excited about his first astronomy lesson. He couldn't wait to see what the rest of the term would bring.

Savannah had been very pleased with her OWL results, they hadn’t been perfect, but they had been good enough. She had been very very happy with it. She knew that getting Os would be better, but she was content with EEs and knowing that this was still better than most. Savannah was getting herself together for the day ahead, she had spent time on the pitch and was looking forward to what this semester would bring for quidditch - she hoped for another victory for sure. The ravenclaw prefect grabbed the last few things that she wanted for the day ahead and then headed out of the room.

Savannah walked into the astronomy classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She glanced at the professor as the man got started, and nodded as he spoke. She didn’t think he needed to introduce himself to them, but even as she thought that she spotted a student she didn’t know in this class. She took out her parchment and began writing down what he was saying about light. She made sure to get it all down, to not miss the important bits, not now that they were learning really interesting things. The lecture wasn’t long and she was then able to pack up and leave the room.

Cassius Styx was relieved that this year would be a little bit of a break from the OWL exams. The NEWTs were next year so while the material might be harder, the necessary cramming would not happen. He glanced over at his cousin as he got ready. He still was in disbelief that Terror got a prefect badge. The head of house must not be all there. Cass would not say a word since he was protective over his. He pinned it to his chest and finished getting ready for class. With that, he got up and left the Slytherin dorms to hopefully make it on time, and sit next to his girlfriend if she was taking that course. He took what he wanted without a planned career. Oh, yeah he was going far in life.

Cass walked in the Astronomy tower, and found his seat. They had Professor Nakamura again, which he was surprised about. The turnover rate was impressive. He heard that they would be going over light this time. He took out his parchment, ink and quill to get started on some notes. He was not aware of how it worked. But this would be informational. He doubted that he would have needed it for any of his career choices, but he would be surprised. He nodded along though. The homework was not too bad, just look up the electromagnetic spectrum. He got up and left the Astronomy tower. He was going to start on his homework immediately after all.

Ruto's break had gone rather quickly, or at least a lot quicker than she had hoped. She liked Hogwarts and loved being able to explore the castle and its grounds, however did not like attending classes. She wanted to enjoy life and not be locked up in a castle studying. Luckily, she was looking forward to some of her classes this semester, so that kept her a little motivated. She headed to her classes, following her classmates there.

Roo entered the Astronomy Tower and took her usual seat within the classroom. The professor started the lesson quickly, talking to the class about light as an energy. Roo took some notes as he went, and looked into the instruments in front of them. To see the world in a different sort of light was very interesting and Roo thought she could look through the instruments all day. At the end of the lesson, she thanked the professor before heading out.
