Onyx had had enough. He had been trying his hardest all year to make his sister accept him, and here they were in December with hardly any progress to show for it. What made it worse was that he'd been attempting to catch his sister since Brightstone weekend, but she was never around. Every time he caught up with her she made some excuse and left immediately after. If rumors were true, she'd been spending a lot of her time since Brightstone hanging around with Mervyn Strangeways. Somehow, that just irritated him more. Sapphire had been furious at him for attempting to set the pair up, and now she was blowing him off for the stupid kid.

Onyx had debated doing this, but his mind was made up. She had to give him something, anything that he could work with. He wasn't just going to just sit there and let her push him out of her life. He made his way into the Great Hall with purpose. She couldn't avoid him this time. He spotted her quickly and went to stand opposite her at the Slytherin table. Hands in his pockets, he cleared his throat to get her attention. "Hey Sapphire, we need to talk."

Sapphire was worn out. She had barely made it back to the dorms in time for curfew last night. It was worth it though. She munched on her breakfast slowly. It was good, at least. She was sure in another week or two she'd be able to beat Mervyn, she thought she was starting to pick out his strategy.

Before that, though, she was ready to challenge her brother. His new chest set was ready in her bag. She hadn't wrapped it, but there was a sapphire blue bow on it to mark it as a gift. She yawned. If Onyx liked the chess set, it was worth it. Then again, that seemed like a bonus right now. She had really enjoyed spending time with Mervyn. It seemed the more she talked to him, the more she liked him.

Her thoughts drifted to the boy as she ate. He was just so... Fascinating, and she couldn't figure out why. And she was noticing things about him, little things.
Like the way he tended to smile with his mouth closed, and his eyebrows would raise a little bit at the same time. The kind of dark green, hazel of his eyes.

And every now and then he would get a faint welsh lilt to his speech, so different to his cockney accent but not completely out of place. It reminded her of the night he'd kissed her, and it always made her blush to remember. He'd asked to stay friends, sure, but...

She took a bite of her food, lost in thought, not noticing her brother until he cleared his throat. She swallowed quickly, and stood, reaching for her bag. "Onyx, hey," She started, eager to give him his gift. She was easily sidetracked, sure, but what could she do about it?

Onyx felt anger rising in his gut as Sapphire stood quickly, reaching for her bag. He scowled and cut her off, slamming his hand down on the table. He didn't care who turned to look, she was going to stay and she was going to listen. "Stop!" He snapped at her loudly. "For once in your frigging life will you stop running away and just listen to me!" He demanded, his eyes burning as he glared at her.

He hardly noticed he was shouting at her as he continued, just relieved to have her attention for once. "I only came to this school so we could be together, and you're too busy spending all your time with that, that, stupid Gryffindor git!" He leaned in closer, making sure she was listening. His anger was getting the best of him. "If this is how you treat your family then it's no wonder you got dropped at that stupid orphanage!"

He didn't realize until it was too late what he had said, but he couldn't take it back.

Sapphire froze, her eyes wide as Onyx started yelling at her. She stood there, silent, while his words echoed in the suddenly quiet room. The silence was broken by the sharp snap of her hand connecting with his face. Her teeth clenched and fire in her eyes, she replied to her brother coldly. "I never asked for your help, you arrogant prick." She pulled her bag over her shoulder, taking the chess set out and throwing it at him. "You were the one complaining how we never did anything together. Here."

She turned on her heel and began to storm off. "That 'stupid git' was teaching me to play. Bugger off and find someone else to leech on to." She snapped over her shoulder, ignoring the tears that had begun to well up in her eyes. She didn't need him. She left the room, not looking back.

Onyx wasn't surprised when. Sapphire's hand connected with his face. He had gone too far and he knew it. "Sapph..." He tried, but she wasn't listening. He barely managed to catch the box she threw at him, and he looked at the chess set with wide eyes.

So... She hadn't forgotten him, or their birthday. She had put a lot of time and effort into his gift and he had just made a complete fool of himself. He looked up at her as she began to storm off. "Sapph, wait...!" He started, but stopped. She was furious. There was no way he would survive an apology right now.

He let out a weary sigh and turned to sit at the Gryffindor table. He would give her a few hours to calm down before trying to talk to her again.
