Landon folded his arms as the students filed in and took their seats. He was in a good mood and felt that last lesson was rather enjoyable to watch. He gave a smile to the class, "Good morning guys! How are you all?" He gazed over the class and just kept smiling at them all, even after nothing but a couple of nods from some of the students. "Well, remember the last lesson, you repotted the Mandrake seedlings. It wasn't all too pleasant, was it?" He chuckled softly. "Their cry isn't fatal yet, but it will knock you out for a couple of hours in the seedling stage. As they mature though, they put up more of a fight than what you saw last lesson."

Landon leaned against his desk and continued, "Those Mandrakes right now are in the toddler stage, and will be in the Childhood stage soon. Then, they will acquire more care and attention. But for now, all they need to get through the days is your care." He paused. "They prefer damp soil, shade to sunlight, and occasional food. It may sound easy, but it will take a combination of all three to help them thrive. I would like you all to go and find your mandrake and give them some water. Then, over in the corner are some barrels filled with food pellets. Only a fourth of a scoop twice a day to keep them satisfied." The professor smiled as he watched his students all scurry over to tend to their mandrakes. "Oh, and you'll have to poke the pellets down gently into the compost or they will over stimulate themselves trying to get to the food."

Landon sat at his desk the whole lesson, watching carefully as his students happily fed and watered their mandrakes. When the lesson ended, Landon quickly reminded them about their journals. "Don't forget to keep record of your mandrake. You will name it, talk about the stage they are in, and what you did to help it grow that day. Have a good week guys!"

-----

Assignment: RP the lesson and write a third diary entry about your mandrake.

This whole thing was stupid, as far as Flynn was concerned. His stupid mandrake could die and he wouldn't care in the slightest about it. Having to look after it was just a right old pain and not one he would like to be dealing with, so he simply decided he was going to do the absolute minimum possible in the class. Enough to look as though he was taking it seriously, but not enough so he actually had to put in any effort. Besides, running back and forth to look after some stupid plant wasn't exactly easy for him anymore, so he'd rather do as little walking around as possible. This was exactly how he spent the majority of the lesson, only really doing the bare minimum to keep his plant happy, barely even bothering to water the plant or even feed it correctly. By the end of the class he had probably moved the least out of his classmates, but at least his stupid plant was still alive, only scoffing as he was reminded to d that stupid journal they were supposed to be keeping about their mandrake's growth and development. That was just something else to worry about for later, for now, he was simply more than pleased to finally get to leave the greenhouse and not have to worry about some screaming, needy plant until his next lesson.

James wouldn’t say he had enjoyed his first experience with his mandrake but he’d definitely had worse lessons so far in his Hogwarts career. He made his way into the Greenhouse for the latest Herbology lesson where they would once again be working with their mandrakes. He listened to Professor Carter as he explained to them what stage their mandrakes were currently in, what stage they would be in soon and what care they needed from their dutiful masters for that lesson. James listened and once the professor had finished he went to grab his mandrake and return it to his station along with water and food pellets. James poured water on the mandrake’s soil so it was nice and damp which made pushing food pellets into the soil that much easier. He did so until he had pushed as much food as suggested into the soil so the mandrake could eat it, or whatever it did with food. He then spent the rest of the lesson filling in journal and when the lesson was over James returned the mandrake to its spot where it faced the sun at just the right angle. When the lesson was over he made his way out of the classroom.

For the first time in quite a while, Harper was looking forward to Herbology. The mandrakes — while incredibly ugly and very dangerous — were quite interesting, and she already felt a sense of ownership over her assigned mandrake. As usual, Harper packed her earmuffs and a pair of ear plugs before hurrying to the greenhouse, wondering what they would do today.

Class started shortly after Harper arrived, and she frowned when Professor Carter mentioned that the cry of a seedling wasn't fatal. That would have been useful information to know last week, before they had repotted the creatures. She'd spent the entire time thinking that she was one loose set of earmuffs away from death. He went on to mention that the mandrakes were only in the toddler stage, which was kind of concerning. How big did mandrakes get? The seedlings had been roughly the size of a baby. Did that mean a grown-up mandrake was human-sized? She definitely did not want to meet a six foot tall mandrake.

After listening to Professor Carter's instructions, Harper retrieved her mandrake and a quarter scoop of food. She could only see the leaves, but it looked healthy enough. After watering it, she dumped the pellets in and started to use her pencil to poke the pellets down into the soil. She wasn't sure if the mandrake was moving underneath the dirt, but she did not want it accidentally latching onto her finger. The whole task only took a couple of minutes, which was good because she was apparently supposed to find time in her schedule to do this twice a day.

As Harper waited for the end of the class, she started to work on her diary entry. There wasn't a whole lot to say since everything interesting was happening below the soil. But she wasn't about to dig up her mandrake anytime soon. She finished just as class ended and followed her classmates out, trying to figure out how she'd clear her schedule to make time for mandrake feedings.

Diary Entry #2

Mandy is currently in the toddler stage, which means her cries aren't fatal yet. Not that she's doing any crying since she's currently buried in soil. I fed her for the first time today. I had to push the food into the dirt so that she could reach them. I also gave her some water. Her leaves are still green, and she seems to be doing okay.

It was time for another herbology class, and for once Saira was not too excited about it. She had wanted to stay in bed and sleep in, and though it was nowhere near New Zealand's december, she felt very cold. Saira felt under the weather, her eyes tired and her arms feeling weak. She lazily headed towards the greenhouse with her journal and earmuffs in hand, bundled up in more than a few layers.

Luckily for her, she wouldn't have to do much today, just water and feed the mandrake. She wouldn't have to deal with it's struggling and screaming that day. She headed over to the barrels before watering it, wanting to get the food pellets first. Saira took some and went over to the mandrake, making sure to grab a water canister. She dribbled some water into the soil and poked the food pellets in with her pinky. It was easy enough but Saira wasn't too sure if she could come to the greenhouse later again to take care of the mandrake. Maybe she'd ask one of her roommates? She pushed the thought aside and decided to try and focus on writing the journal entry.

Willford is in it's toddler stage, and is still relatively easy to take care of. It's cries aren't fatal yet so I'll be fine for now. I fed it some food pellets and watered the soil to make sure it was damp. It seems to be healthy.

Ivy returned to the Herbology classroom with high spirits. She was ready to take care of her mandrake again and do the best job in the entire class. At least, that was the plan. Ivy took her usual seat in the front of the classroom and listened as the professor talked about what they had done last week. He told them then that the mandrakes were in the toddler stage now, but would soon move to the childhood stage. Ivy took notes on what that meant. then they had to get their mandrakes and take care of them, giving them some water and food pellets. Ivy did as she was told, giving the mandrake water and pushing food pellets into the compost. When she was done, she wrote in her journal about the mandrake. It seemed to be doing fine, but not noticeably better than other mandrakes, which was a bit of a shame. When the lesson was over, Ivy put her mandrake in the spot she had found it in and left the classroom once they were dismissed.

Emmaline had realized that having a 'pet' mandrake was going to be a lot of work. So far it had not been too challenging, but once the roots started to grow, the young Gryffindor imagined the workload would just increase. It would be worth it to see the results even with all the work Emmaline already had to do. All these thoughts swimming through her head as she entered into the Herbology Greenhouse, her backpack strung over her shoulder.

Emmaline took her normal spot next to her mandrake. At the moment she only saw a few adorable leaves poking out of the dirt, but that was a slight improvement from the screaming yell she heard last time she replanted the mandrake. Maybe Emmaline liked her mandrake potted instead of screaming for her trying to help move it. The young girl smiled warmly on the mandrake nonetheless. She took out her journal, placing it beside in case she had to take any notes.

The Professor described a little more about the mandrakes and the stage they were in. It was as Emmaline had expected that the work would increase. But luckily it seemed these roots seem to grow up so fast. The young Gryffindor wondered if she would grow more attached to it as it grew. This probably would happen, especially since one of there tasks today would be to name the mandrake. The young girl thought about this name as she began to work on the daily task.

It was time to feed her mandrake. Emmaline put on her dragonhide gloves and walked over to full her watering can. The young girl poured some water onto the mandrake, making sure that the mandrake was watered enough for the soil to be damp like they enjoyed. She then walked over to get some of the pellets, filling one fourth of the scoop exactly. She did not want to overfeed or underfeed.

Emmaline placed each pellet into the compost of the mandrake's container. The brunette was sure she did not know exactly what it meant that they would over stimulate themselves, but it certainly did not sound good to the health of the little leaves poking out of the soil. The leaves actually looked a little like tangles of hair. That's it! Emmaline thought to herself. Rapunzel She thought coming up with a name that seemed to fit what she knew about her little mandrake. Smiling to herself, Emmaline continued to feed her mandrake.

At the end of the class, Emmaline wrote in her journal, making sure to add the perfect name that she had come up with for her young Mandrake. When her journal was completed, Emmaline made sure to say goodbye to the young root and pack up her belongings. As the lesson endered, the young Gryffindor walked out of the Greenhouse, making a mental note to come back and feed her little Rapunzel again for the second time that night.

Trophy Showcase:
Fenton entered the Herbology Greenhouse. He was curious to see what his mandrake looked like today. The young Gryffindor did not know how fast the mandrakes grew, maybe they would do some magic like one the pumpkins last year. Maybe that did not work the same with such a strange root. Only more classes would tell, as Fenton took his spot next to his mandrake.

He did not actually see the mandrake, it was potted in the bigger planter. But he was happy to know that was normal for this stage in it's development. As the Professor spoke, Fenton tried to jot down a few important notes in his journal. He knew he would have to write it later so why not get it over with. When he wrote down everything that seemed important, except the name, Fenton began to feed his little mandrake.

Fenton walked over to fill his water can with some water. The professor said the mandrakes prefered damp soil, which made Fenton realize this little root needed more water to make its own more comfortable. He poured some water into the pot, making sure not to overwater the planet. He had heard that was a thing. When he was certain the mandrake had enough water, Fenton began the feeding process.

He placed each pellet into the compost of the bin, making sure to push them down far enough without touching the mandrake himself. When he finished the feeding, he sat down looking down at the pot. He wondered what he would name the mandrake now. Fenton's mind raced to all the comic books he was reading, wondering if he could get a name from there. The name Clark came to mind. "Clark" He said aloud wondering if the mandrake would show any interest in a name. Nothing happened, but the mandrake didn't scream either so that seemed to be a good sign.

Mandrake Journal said:
Toddler Stage:
-Soon to be Childhood Stage
-Like Damp Soil, Shade to Sunlight, and Occasional Food
-Feed Twice a Day, fourth a scoop
-Place pellets in compost so Mandrakes eat easily
-Name: Clark
Fenton quickly wrote down the name he had given his mandrake in the journal. That was it for the day though. Fenton packed up his belongings and said goodbye to his mandrake. The young boy then walked out of the Greenhouse wondering if he was responsible enough to take care of this mandrake. He would certainly have to be more diligent about this class than his other classes. He did not want his mandrake to suffer because he was not responsible.
