Trophy Showcase:
Professor Styx entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom earlier than the students, and he leaned against the desk. His arms folded across his chest and he opened the doors to allow the second years to enter the darker classroom with the windows blocked by shades. Professor Styx did not think that they would enjoy this class any longer. However, he would ensure that they all would learn however. He made sure that everyone was present before he said in his cold, monotone voice, "I am Professor Styx in case some of you all transferred in, and the rest of the students should remember me from the previous year. To begin, this year you will be learning the effects of prank-like jinxes." His thin lips almost curled up into a sneer when he thought of that, as he personally did not enjoy the effects and childishness that sometimes resulted in jinxes. "And you will also learn how to defend against them though many will be similar to last year."

After explaining the syllabus of this year to the students, Professor Styx continued to remain where he was, and he continued, "Can anyone tell me what a curse is?" A student raised their hand, and Professor Styx gestured his gloved hand toward the student to allow them to continue. Once they answered the question correctly, he continued to question the students, "Now who can explain what a jinx is and the difference between it and a curse, if one applies?" Another student raised their hand and Professor Styx motioned for them to answer, and they got the question right as well. Now everyone should know what a jinx and a curse is. The former Death Eater turned to the blackboard and the chalk wrote up their homework which was list three curses and three jinxes as well as their effects. After the chalk finished, it dropped to the holder, and Professor Styx turned his eyes to the class.

"I want you to copy this down, and turn it in to me by your next lesson. You are dismissed." Professor Styx waved his hand at the doors and they parted open to allow the students to leave the classroom. Professor Styx watched them leave, and thought that they should be thankful that the assignment was all that they received. Luckily, he was in a good mood enough to not torture them - for now at least.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson, and do the homework assigned. You all should know the proper heading to use.

Tres was eager to get back into the swing of things. Seeing her family over the break was a reminder about how different she and her siblings path had become. Her twin was studying elsewhere as a muggle, and the Slytherin felt somewhat inferior knowing that she and her favourite sister were learning things that he and Dos would never know. For years Tres had been at the bottom of the picking order in her family but she had Hope now that maybe that would change.

She took a seat in her first DADA lesson of the year, curious to know what they would be doing. Upon hearing it was jinxes for pranks however she turned up her nose. How was that meant to help them? It was likely they’d be practicing the spells on one another too and the Slytherin hated the idea of jinxing someone for the fun of it. Copying down the homework, a little disappointed, she tried to remain hopeful for the rest of her classes, and maybe they would prove useful in some way after all.

Daintree had made half an attempt over the break to get his dad to listen to him, but he was pretty resigned to his fate. It hadn’t helped that something had clearly been going on in his family and they had just been refusing to tell him, which had only added to his frustration and had made him for the first time look forward to coming back to school. He didn’t know and he didn’t care about what was happening, he wished they would tell him what was going on but if they didn’t want to, he wasn’t going to say anything. He just went back to school feeling a little pleased to return to something that was becoming ever familiar to him. The slytherin was getting himself together and ready for the day, he was reluctantly finding the right books and notes that he needed to face the day. It would be a lazy week he hoped. After all most of the first weeks back were lazier weeks where he didn’t have to worry so much about paying attention, it was the best week, because in his mind he hated the final week because studying was boring. Daintree was slow in getting himself together, waiting until the very last moment he could before he headed to the first class of the day.
Daintree headed into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took his usual spot in the classroom. The slytherin took a few books out and just placed them down on the table in front of him as he waited for the professor to get started. He was unlikely to enjoy this class if they didn’t do much magic, for a class that boasted defence they didn’t do a lot of actual fun learning. Or even just spell learning. Dain looked towards the professor as the man introduced himself and then told them they’d be learning some prank-like jinxes which was certainly something he was eager to learn. The slytherin didn’t bother pulling his notes towards him as the professor went on and on about what they would be covering. Finally moving on to asking them a question. He listened to the answer given by one of the other students, definitely not keen to participate in what he was asking. It followed another question and then the homework appeared on the board behind him. Dain took a note of it before he was able to pack up his things and head out of the classroom. He maybe had a note of the homework, but it would be a completely other thing for him to actually do it. Unsurprisingly Daintree didn’t do a whole lot of homework.

Eric had been surprised by what had happened at the stupid Christmas party. It had cleared a few things up for him, but he was still mad at his whole family. It was too difficult to let go of anger he had had for so long, and he still felt like they could have doen more for his mother when she needed them. Eric preferred not to linger on his emotions too much, and would much rather push them to the side. So that's what he tried to do, even if it meant focusing on lessons. The boy had been wary of classes with the Slytherins ever since the mandrake incident, and knew Defence Against the Dark Arts was one he would have with that annoying house. But he had the comfort of knowing that Sydney was probably not dumb enough to try anything in front of Professor Styx. The downside was that he didn't dare to try anything either.

The professor told them that they would be learning about the effects of prank-like jinxes this semester. Despite his reluctance to start any sort of trouble in this class, Eric couldn't help shooting Sydney a slight grin. If he was going to try these spells, he knew who he would be using them on. Then he looked back at Professor Styx, who asked them a question. Eric didn't bother to raise his hand, not doing it for the next question either. He took notes on what the homework was so he wouldn't forget, then packed up his things and left the classroom when they were dismissed. He was pretty curious about what they would learn this semester. He hoped it would be useful.

Aisa had been annoyed with herself for getting upset at what some random older girl said to her last semester. She usually did a good job of hiding her emotions, and now Sully had seen her upset. Out of all people at Hogwarts, she supposed it was lucky it was the one person she actually sort of considered a friend, but she was still frustrated by the event. She decided to distance herself a bit again. It wasn't necessary to open up.

So Aisa headed to class by herself and took a seat in the back by herself. She didn't expect much from this first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, and simply listened quietly as the professor started the lesson by introducing himself. Then he told them they would be learning the effects of prank-like jinxes this semester, and Aisa sighed quietly. That sounded like a childish waste of time, not really what she expected from Defence Against the Dark Arts. The professor then asked a question, and after a beat, Aisa reluctantly raised her hand. "A curse is a dark spell, usually one with a bad effect for the target." She said, thinking of the few curses she knew. She listened as a few other students answered the professor's other questions, taking a few notes. Then she noted down the homework as well, which didn't seem very difficult thankfully. Aisa packed up her things when they were dismissed, and left the classroom by herself.

Olivia was glad to be back at school and was looking forward to getting back into the routine of going to classes, it was strange how comforting she had found it since starting at Hogwarts. When the first day of classes came around Olivia made her way to the classroom for defence against the dark arts where Professor Styx was already waiting for the students when they arrived. She took her seat and waited for him to begin which he did so with a quick introduction for anyone who may have transferred in, Olivia quickly glanced around the room, she didn't notice any new faces. She took out her parchment and quill and took notes as her head of house talked about curses and jinxes and what was different about them. Olivia hadn't really thought much about it and couldn't say she was all that interested. When the lesson was over and Olivia had written down their homework assignment she packed up her notes and made her way out of the classroom.

Zeke had been looking forward to getting back to defence against the dark arts, their first year in the subject had been pretty interesting and he couldn't wait to see what the dark and brooding Professor Styx had in store for them as second years. He made his way inside the classroom and took his seat. It was a good start as the professor was already waiting for them and not making his way in just in time to start. He sat up and listened to the man as he talked about the differences between jinxes and hexes which by the standards of defence against the dark arts seemed pretty tame but the Gryffindor took a few notes anyway. When the lesson was over he packed up and made his way out of the classroom hoping their next lesson would be more exciting.

If Sydney had to pick a favourite class, Defense was probably up there. She had some begrudging respect for Professor Styx, if only because he didn't bother trying to coddle them just because they were younger. Taking her seat, she wondered the importance of learning 'prank-like' jinxes. Was it a warm up for more dangerous magic, perhaps? Or were they not trusted with anything else. Sydney wondered if Styx would actually take her side for once if Eric tried anything this year too, scrunching her face up in disgust when Holland dared to look her way during class. Maybe if they had a practical lesson this time, she'd have an excuse to jinx him. In the name of education, of course. Styx asked a question and Sydney raised her hand for the second, not wanting to be shown up by the Gryffindors. "Jinx's are usually defined by their severity, they're often more irritating than damaging, unlike a curse." She said primly, shooting a glance at Eric. She doubted he even knew what was going on in half their classes. Once class was over, Sydney grabbed her books, taking a note of the homework and making a point to stalk past Eric, avoiding any eye contact.
