Emerson never dreamed Hogwarts would be this big and filled with so many students. His sense of curiosity stopped there however and his mind went to thinking about all the tests and exams he would have to take. This year he'd have to pass his flying exams, something he was rather nervous about. He hunkered down his shoulders as he carried the weight of most of his textbooks on his back in his backpack. Leaving from the dungeons and trying to head back up to the Hufflepuff Common Room with all his books was providing to be exhausting for the small boy. He opted to pause near the landing on the first floor. He was only eleven after all, why did the school not have some sort of magical system of getting around, how did they think he'd be able to carry all this stuff around everyday? He sighed as he leaned against the railing and looked down at the ground level floor and up to the top of the building. Beautifully decorated it felt like he was in some sort of palace back home in England or just Europe in general, not in the middle of nowhere New Zealand.

Lucas really loved his lessons at Hogwarts, and spent much of his free time leafing through his textbooks to learn even more. It was so amazing to know there was a whole world of magic out here to learn about, and many of the things Lucas had been daydreaming about since he was small were real. Reading his school books was almost as good these days as reading his favorite storybooks, though there weren't as many heroes and villains in the textbooks. He was heading back to the common room from his last class, when he spotted his roommate leaning against the railing of the stairs. He paused on the steps, looking around. Was he waiting for someone? "Uh, hi Emerson." He said, following his gaze to the top. "What are you looking at?"

Lily had been enjoying her time at Hogwarts. It made a very nice change to actually be able to get away from her brother and have some fun of her own, and even though she was a little sad sometimes that they had been separated, she was very glad that it meant he'd stopped stealing her chocolate. Being a Ravenclaw meant she often had to travel so far to get anywhere, and the young girl often chose to just stay near the bottom half of the castle until she absolute couldn't help it. While walking through the first floor, she spotted one of the other kids from her class looking a bit tired, and another talking to him. Lily hadn't really made any real friends of her own yet but she was usually quite content in her own company, although the curiosity of these boys was getting the better of her. "Is something happening?" she asked, particular attention paid to the boy who was peering into the air.

Emerson hadn't spent much time conversing with his roommates, not yet at least. It always felt weird trying to bring up a subject when he didn't know them and what they might be interested in. So when he heard his voice and looked around spotting a roommate of his he was surprised. He smiled looking down towards his feet as he did and backed a step away from the railing. "Hi Lucas. Just at the castle really," he said glancing up realizing now he had probably looked rather lame just staring up like he had been. "I'm amazed by, uh, how many portraits they've managed to fit onto the walls," Emerson said making something up that might sound slightly interesting. Of course he didn't know much of anything about Lucas so maybe he hated portraits and talking about the ones that lined the castle walls was a mistake.

Lucas smiled at Emerson's words. "Oh, I agree." He said, looking up at the portraits too. "I think it's so cool that they can talk too. I wonder if they're all friends." He said curiously, looking up at the ones up high. A girl approached, and Lucas looked at her and shook his head. "Not really." He told the girl. "We were just looking at the portraits, I think." He said with a smile. "Don't you think they're awesome?" He asked her. He didn't really know her that well, but recognized her from some of his classes.

Emerson blushed as he heard a girl talking to him and his housemate respond to her. he felt quite a bit embarrassed by the whole being caught staring up at things, and it being because he was too tired to keep climbing the stairs at the moment. He wasn't even sure if she was going to be nice about their staring at the portraits or not, he didn't know who this girl was. He stood there slightly awkwardly as Lucas responded to the girl and waited for a response back. Emerson wasn't quite sure what to say in these situations where he had to talk to more than one person, how was the dialogue meant to flow? Could he say what he wanted whenever or should he wait? Not really certain he opted to stay silent and continue to catch his breath.
