Jasper was having a fairly quiet semester, for the first time since his mother's death. He couldn't get over it and he doubted he ever would. He had been the closest one to her, so he had taken it the hardest. He was slowly coming to accept what happened though, very slowly. The castle was packed that day so Jasper wanted out and he decided to study on the grounds that day. It was a nice day, it wasn't freezing which gave him a sense of relief since he wasn't the type of person to love being surrounded by others. He liked his space. Jasper's mind, however, soon went astray from his books and instead of concentrating on the upcoming OWLs which were really soon, he wondered how his family was doing. He hadn't received any letters from any of his siblings thus far in the semester, and he sighed. The loneliness he felt every day was something the boy was getting used to, he could no longer remember what it felt like not to feel lonely. Jasper looked around him, and when he did, he noticed another student who probably had the same idea as him; otherwise the area was deserted. Out of respect, he sent a smile her way, though he wouldn't blame her if she thought it looked a little forced. He couldn't help it.

Ella had discovered soon after arriving at Hogwarts, that the grounds were infinitely preferable to the cold and dark castle. Outside was a rich tapestry of color and sound, and unlike the inside of the castle it didn't remind her of her grandfather's estate where she had grown up. She had complicated feelings about that place, as well as her grandfather. Part of her grieved for him, but another part was glad to be away from his influence. It was hard to keep her mind on her studies, though she tried. There wasn't anyone to make proud anymore, unless one counted her older sister, but she still cared about her grades. There was only one other boy outside, at least as far as she could see. It surprised her when she noticed him look at her and smile. She stared at him, in surprise. Then glanced around to make sure he hadn't meant it for anyone else. She didn't know him, and he didn't know her. She had no clue why he would pay her any attention. Turning back to him, she frowned. "Do you need something?"
