Lesson Missed: One

To say that Kauri was stressed about returning to Hogwarts would be an understatement. He felt, as he always did, relieved to be back after being away from the magical world for so long, but this year had brought an unexpected storm of things to worry about. His problems with Rose wouldn't leave his head, even when she was far away living her own life, and he was stuck here at Hogwarts. A place he now only had a single year left at before he would be off on his own. Kauri wasn't used to making decisions for himself, and he was worried about his life without the structure of school to guide him. While he was still here though, he had also gained a new responsibility to worry about. Being Head Boy was a huge honour, but after last year, Kauri really needed to make sure he did the job well, follow in the footsteps of better Head Boys, like Flavio. Kauri liked being looked up to as a good example, but he wanted to make sure he was making the best of that, and do well at everything he tried.

And for some reason, one of those things was Defense Against the Dark Arts. Kauri didn't know what had posessed him to keep up with this subject for so long; Professor Styx was terrifying, and the subject itself was grisly at best. Every time Kauri considered not signing up for it though, he was haunted by thoughts of what might happen if he gave up Defense, and then got attacked by a more powerful wizard. He liked to think people were nice enough that that was unlikely to happen, but Kauri knew it would be foolish to take that as a given. So he listened as Professor Styx told them what they would be covering this year, taking notes of everything the Professor talked about. He would have to be absolutely sure to do all his reading ahead for this class, not wanting to risk angering Professor Styx. It was a relief once the lesson was over and Kauri packed his things up, glad to get away from this gloomy room.

Analei was definitely enjoying being back at school, and was especially loving her new title of Prefect. It made it all the bit sweeter that Arvel was a Prefect with her as well, she would have hated having to do it without him. The Prefect was also happy to have Zennon back in her life, who she didn't even realize how much she had missed.
Entering the classroom, Analei smiled at Zennon, before taking her normal seat next to Arvel. She was surprised to see that they would be reviewing something so early in the year, but she figured it was probably going to be in their exam, so she quickly retook notes, even though it was all things that she knew. Analei quickly put her hand up to answer the question, but someone else was chosen; at least it was someone in Hufflepuff, though Analei didn't know Pippa very well. Analei continued to jot down notes as the Professor continued speaking, and was again surprised that they weren't given any homework. It all seemed too easy for her OWL year.

Lesson Missed: 2 & 3

Sam's first week had gone fairly well, even though it was still early in the semester the girl had found a good way to keep up with her classes and the homework the professors gave to the students. So far, it hadn't been terrible to take everything, but she wasn't naive enough to believe that everything would definitely go smoothly just because her first week was great. She still had to work very hard and earn the grades - after all, she wasn't near being done trying to impress her father. Sam grabbed her belongings and headed to class, taking a seat at the front as usual once she arrived to Defence. She automatically took out her writing equipment and began to write notes as the professor lectured, not focusing on anything or anyone else.

Thankfully, unlike some of her other classes, here no one bothered to talk since it was her head of house who was the professor and he certainly made sure that the students were listening. If they weren't, well, it wasn't her problem. Sam needed to do well, she reminded herself. It was OWL year after all. Not to mention, she felt more competitive than ever this year. With herself, and occasionally with her classmates. She kept up with Styx as he lectured, glancing at the clock every now and again to see how much longer she had left to finish her note-taking. It was all very interesting stuff, but she frowned when the man was finished. It seemed easier work than she had expected, and they had no homework. Sam didn't know whether to be relieved or not. When they were dismissed she packed away her things and headed to the common room.

EDIT: to add another lesson post (sorry!!)

Sam’s semester was going pretty well. She was on top of things, she really wanted to do well this year since it was her OWLs and not to mention, she was literally taking every elective the school had to offer. But, she was proving that it wasn’t as difficult as one might think, to keep up with the workload. Then again, as much as she hated to admit it, even to herself, Sam knew that she was a nerd and bookworm and was therefore thirsty for knowledge almost twenty-four seven. But no matter, she could be sociable too, as proven by the friendships she had formed - and surprisingly kept forming each year. She arrived to class right on time and smiled politely at the professor as she took a seat in the front, her usual spot. It was the best position to be in so as not to have any distractions.

The more time she spent at Hogwarts, the less intimidated she felt by Professor Styx. It was easier not to be when she had spent almost five years in Slytherin, with the man standing in front of the classroom as her head of house. Despite this though Defence against the Dark Arts was bound to be one of the most difficult OWLs, so Sam wasn’t going to put less effort into it. She had to put as much effort into this subject as much as her others, if not a bit more. They were learning about the Gemino Curse, thankfully Sam had done the reading so she wouldn’t have much of a problem in understanding what Styx would be talking about. She took careful note of the difference between the curse and a vastly different spell with a similar name, Geminio. She didn’t want to get confused. When they were allowed to leave the girl grabbed her things and thanked the professor politely on her way out, heading to the library to complete the assignment.

Lesson Missed: Two

The first week had gone fairly well for the second year, though she also felt quite pressured into having to do well already. She needed to, she had to do it for her mom, and biological father. Mostly for herself, but that wasn’t the most important part. She needed to be able to keep up from now on as otherwise she was undoubtedly going to struggle. She was only in the first semester of her second year and yet the Singaporean felt the pressure of needing to fit in with the rest of her yearmates. She was aware that most of them seemed to have brilliant minds and Chloe could only pray that she would turn out to be one of those too, eventually. The Ravenclaw entered the Defence classroom and chided herself for being slightly late. If only she were able to memorise the corridors and where each of her classes were off by heart, it wouldn’t be a problem. But as it turned out, her common room was at the very top and so she sometimes struggled to remember which floor below was the right one to be at, at that specific time. But this was the one class where Chloe really did not want to be on the professor’s bad side. Professor Styx was intimidating to say the least and she hadn’t even chosen a seat at the front - actually, since most seats had been filled up by the time she got here, there were only a few spaces left somewhere in the middle. She didn’t mind it that much.

The Professor began by asking questions but the girl was too nervous and not confident enough just yet to answer so she remained silent, allowing other people to reply. Maybe given time, she would answer, if her brain could just breathe a little. She really needed to learn how to just take it easy while at the same time doing enough. Chloe felt like she wasn’t doing enough of what she was supposed to be doing. Whether it was making friends, or learning, or impressing her peers and the teachers. Nothing seemed good enough right now. Her mother had always told her she was being too hard on herself, but Chloe couldn’t help it. She shifted her eyes back to the man standing in the front. She sighed quietly for the umpteenth time. This was not as nice of a subject as she had hoped it would be. Last year, it had been worse for sure, but she had hoped it would improve. But so long as this guy was her professor, it didn’t seem like it would change anytime soon. Chloe quickly scribbled on her parchment below her notes the homework assignment. When she was permitted to leave, the ravenclaw grabbed her belongings and headed to the library.

Lesson Missed: Three

Now that it was the third week of the semester, Chloe felt a bit more at ease, especially after a nice student had offered his help to her when he saw how stressed she seemed with all of her books and her indecisiveness about which subject to study first. Even if she did feel slightly more comfortable about the year ahead, however, the Ravenclaw knew that in order to fit in and do well, so as not to be the person who was behind in everything, she needed to follow her study timetable quite strictly. Something that allowed her to be part of a group was Quidditch and whenever she felt overwhelmed she reminded herself that she had been chosen to be part of a team and that was a good thing, because it also meant she knew people and had connections. She just hoped they didn’t let on her the team just because of who her father was, but more to do with her skills. Chloe was the type of person to practice, work hard, and she wasn’t about to give up this opportunity to be known around the school and be successful in her aims.

She arrived to class promptly and took a seat next to her friend Cyrus, glad that she at least shared this class with him, even if she didn’t share any of the others she took this semester. Chloe didn’t talk however as she want to be on anyone’s bad side, she desperately wanted to be liked. Especially by Professor Styx, though she often wondered if he ever really liked any of his students. She did her very best to listen to the professor intently and to keep up with the man as she took notes, not really sure if she enjoyed this class but not focusing on that because it wasn’t all that important whether she liked a subject or not - if she wanted to fit in, she kept telling herself, she had to do well. In fact, she figured she had to do extremely well in this class specifically, more so than others. Or at least she had to work much harder to get the grades. Not to her surprise, homework was assigned. She wrote it down in her diary and then when they were dismissed she packed up and quickly left the classroom with Cyrus, going to the library this time to see if she could get any work done there. Or perhaps meet new people. Either option sounded good.
