Lesson Missed: Lesson 2

Skylar walked into her second Herbology lesson of the semester, excited to be finally working with a magical plant. Last year they'd worked with only muggle plants, although they did use magic a few times to help themselves a bit. She'd also thankfully remembered to bring earmuffs, since they'd be working with Mandrakes this semester, and she was really excited about it, although a bit nervous.

She found an empty space next to one of the workstations set up around the classroom, and began to listen, curious as to what the first thing they'd be doing would be. She hoped it'd be fun, or at the very least not something boring like just preparing soil. After Professor Carter finished speaking, she let out a nervous breath that she hadn't even realised she'd been holding, and began to do the task in front of her. She put her earmuffs firmly over her ears, as well as put her dragonhide gloves and workrobe on, and watched as the Professor explained the next steps. They were to simply transfer the Mandrake from a smaller pot to a larger one. That was it.

As he finished his demonstration, Skylar began the task, although somewhat nervously. She grabbed the leaves of her Mandrake, and tugged upwards, revealing the Mandrake to be a screaming, and ugly-looking thing which resembled a newborn baby more than a plant. But she was grateful to at least have earmuffs on to shield her from what she was sure were unbearably loud and annoying screams. She quickly stuffed it into the larger pot and used her free hand to put some more soil over the top of it, and only when she was sure it was finally secure beneath all the soil, did she let out a breath she hadn't even realised she'd been holding. All that was left was to water the Mandrake and clean up the area, so she did that quickly, not even realising how much dirt she'd spilt everywhere in the process. And when it was over, she put away the rest of her things and left the classroom, keen to finally take her earmuffs off.

Lesson One:
Today we repotted Mandrakes, which was actually a pretty quick process. All we had to do was yank them out of their old pot and put them into a new one and then cover them in soil and water them. My Mandrake doesn't seem as bad as the others, but it screams A LOT.

Lesson Missed: Lesson 3

After last week's lesson, Skylar was really excited to come back to Herbology. It was actually pretty fun learning to care for a Mandrake, which was funny because she was usually an awful gardener, but she supposed her years of looking after all sorts of animals meant she would end up looking after her Mandrake well too. She hoped.

This lesson turned out to be much more boring than the last one, since all they had to do was feed and water their Mandrake. Skylar sighed as she heard her Professor give them the instructions, but the fact that they would soon progress to the Childhood stage made her excited for what was to come. But in the meantime she had to focus on not killing it, so she dutifully collected some water and watered her Mandrake, noting that it was actually looking a little dehydrated because of the sagging leaves, and then went over to the barrels filled with food pellets. She carefully measured out a quarter of the usual amount, and when she came back, she gently pushed the pellets into the soil, wondering how the Mandrake would reach them since the soil was packed so tightly around it. But she guessed it must work somehow, otherwise she didn't see why Professor Carter would give them these instructions.

It only took a short while, and then she was done with it, so she packed up and just as she was leaving, she heard Professor Carter tell them to make another diary entry. She sighed, especially after she heard they had to name the Mandrakes, but was at least grateful that that was all, since she knew some of her Professors would have easily made them write a whole essay on it.

Lesson 2
Today we looked after our Mandrakes again, and I've decided to name mine Phyllis. I don't know why I did, but it just seemed to suit him, even though I've only really seen him for a few seconds when I transported him from one pot to another. He's now in the toddler stage, so all I had to do today was push pellets of food into the soil for him and water him.

Lesson Two

Brooke hadn’t gotten a chance to ask her parents for a newer pair of earmuffs, so she had disdainfully brought her school pair with her for herbology today. As much as she didn’t like them, she was glad to have listened to Professor Carters warnings when he announced they’d be repotting a mandrake today. She wasn’t thrilled they had to look after a mandrake all semester rather than working on other plants, but maybe Brooke would learn something interesting.

She took a few quick notes on mandrake care before donning her protective gear and listening to Professor Carter’s instructions on how to repot. Once it was their turn, Brooke spent a few moments triple checking her earmuffs where on properly, not wanting to embarrass herself by fainting in class, before grasping her mandrake and pulling it from the soil. It was an ugly thing, and Brooke watched in fascination as it opened its mouth in a scream she couldn’t hear. Eager to get it down with, Brooke quickly moved over to the new pot, nestling the mandrake in the dirt before piling more on top until just the leaves were poking out. Relieved to be finished, Brooke cleaned herself up before working on her journal until the lesson was over.

Week One
Today, we repotted our mandrake seedlings. It is important to follow proper safety guidelines when doing so, as, despite not being deadly yet, a young mandrakes’ cry is still harmful and may cause you to faint if heard.

Mandrakes require damp soil, and good balance of shade and sunlight, and feeding, which I will keep a schedule of below for the duration of my mandrake’s care.

Lesson Three

Brooke wasn’t particularly looking forward to looking after a mandrake all semester. She wasn’t the most fond of the work they’d done in herbology, it requiring a lot more work with your hands than a book could always prep you for, and it didn’t help that the mandrakes themselves were just all round unpleasant. Still, she was here to learn, so for her own sake, Brooke was going to power through it.

She listened and Professor Carter went over the mandrake’s life stages, particularly the toddler stage they were in right now. She took notes on the food and water amounts advised before following her classmates over to the food and water so she could get started on feeding hers and working on her journal. Brooke wasn’t sure what on earth to name the thing, it was rather ugly, but maybe if she gave it a more dignified name, she’d warm up to it. Eventually, Brooke settled on the name Penelope, writing it down in her journal in looping letters before packing up for the day.

Week 2

After repotting last week, the mandrake has reached the ‘toddler’ stage of its development. I have decided to name my mandrake Penelope for the duration of my care for it.
To survive, Penelope will require damp soil, sunlight, and food.
Today, I watered Penelope and gave her a fourth of a scoop of food pellets. I will need to return later after class to feed her her second scoop as well. It’s important to poke the pellets into the soil to ensure Penelope can easily reach it.

Lesson One

After months of pretending that she wasn't a witch around her muggle caregivers, Freya was a little uncertain to be back in classes and learning more magic. Herbology caused her the least amount of anxiety due to the lack of wand waving and memorisation of spells. Magical plants were still plants and Freya wasn't going to be worried over something as silly as a daisy. Even if they were weird and screamed at her, like mandrakes, Freya would simply have to scream back and show them who was in charge. She took her seat in class and listened as the professor spoke about St. Mungo's. Freya hadn't given wizarding medicine too much thought, but found it interesting how closely it was linked to Herbology. Thinking about magical maladies that needed equally magical plants to heal was a path she didn't want to go down, so Freya stamped it down and tried to concentrate on the lecture. She saw how it was - the hospital using free child labour to get their medicinal plants. Freya didn't really mind at all, and smiled at her personal joke. She wrinkled her nose at the mention of an assignment, but took a note it it anyway before she left class. She didn't know anything more about St. Mungo's than what Professor Carter had just said, but Freya was well-acquainted with the library by now and would just have to look it up before anyone questioned her.

*
Lesson Two

Freya didn't like to admit it, but Herbology wasn't so bad for a class where she had to sit and listen to a professor drone on and on about plants. She definitely didn't keep a diary on the plants they'd been learning about hidden under her mattress, because that would imply that she was actually interested in the material. She blinked rapidly in shock as the Bubotuber came into view. If the magical world kept coming up with weirder things to show her even into her fourth year, Freya was seriously going to have to write off her education as a bad dream and disappear into the aether until things made sense. She didn't want to thought - she actually quite liked the strangeness of the vegetation she was meeting. Freya scribbled down some notes as the professor spoke, and wondered what properties the slug-like plant could possibly have.

*
Lesson Three

With classes back in full swing, Freya was finally feeling like she'd gotten back into a routine and didn't have to constantly wonder how things were doing back home in the muggle world. She blew an errant strand of hair out of her face and grimaced as the professor told them what was happening for the lesson. Hadn't she come back to Hogwarts to escape shovelling horse droppings to fertilize the garden? With her gloves and goggles securely in place, Freya felt a little like a mad scientist preparing for a dangerous experiment as she carefully started to place the fertilizer around her bubotuber. It was about as bad as she'd expected, but oddly relaxing and Freya was able to zone out as long as she was able to ignore the smell. She absolutely did not like the idea of having to squeeze pus out of the plants and hoped she'd just heard the professor wrong. Freya packed up her stuff at the end of the lesson and left the greenhouse, rubbing at her arms to remove imaginary dirt that might still linger on her skin.

As Louis entered the Herbology greenhouse he took his usual seat within the room and reverted his attention to the front. No pallets had been set up today so it was a wonder what they were going to do. The professor began lecturing them briefly, announcing that they were going to be learning about pumpkins before giving them a few dot points on the board for them to copy down. Louis did exactly that, keeping it in the same format too so he could look back on it later and know what it was and easily read it. The professor then told them to follow him outside, and Louis couldn't be more excited at the prospect of growing pumpkins. It seemed like such a fun exercise. When instructed, Louis inserted his seed into the ground just as the professor had done. Then they were told to cast a spell on it to make it grow faster. It took a few attempts but Louis was sure he had eventually done it. Now all they had to do was wait, and Louis couldn't help but think that was the most fun part. When dismissed, Louis was happy to leave the class and head to his next class, excited for the next lesson when he could hopefully see its progress.

Rune entered the Herbology Greenhouse. He was really starting to like this class, it was very laid back, which probably had a lot to do with the Professor who was teaching it. Whatever the reason, Rune was excited as he took his seat in the Greenhouse, wondering what they would be doing today. He hoped it would be a bit of gardening. To be honest, he missed it terribly. At home that was a way he could always relate and spend time with his mother. All good memories.

Today the Professor began the lesson with some notes. Rune dug through his backpack to find his writing items before jotting down the notes about pumpkins. Rune honestly did not know much about pumpkins except he always carved one on Halloween and they made a delicious pie.

Notes said:
* The Pumpkin is believed to have originated in North America, where the Native Americans dried strips of Pumpkin and wove them into mats.
* The original name for the pumpkin was Pepon, which was Greek for large melon.
* The Pumpkin is widely known for being served at feasts as Pumpkin Pie, but its notoriety comes from its established tradition at Halloween.

When the little amount of notes were written down neatly, Rune threw everything back into his backpack and followed the Professor outside. Today they would be planting pumpkins, a new side of pumpkins Rune was ready to learn about. Rune found an area of soil that the Professor indicated as he held the given pumpkin seed in his hand. The young Hufflepuff boy got down on his knees, knowing now he would have to clean this uniform. Not a big deal though.

Rune used the spade and dug a little hole into the soil. He placed his seed gently into the ground as he began to cover it with dirt, giving it a nice coating that was not too packed down. Rune placed his tools aside as he went to go get the water can. He gave the little buried seed a good amount of water. Happy with how it was soaking into the soil.

Rune was surprised at the Professor's next words. They were going to help the pumpkins grow with magic. Instantly Rune wondered if his mother did the same in her own amazing garden. Maybe that was one of her many secrets. Wiping his dirty hands on his uniform, Rune took out his wand. Pointing his wand at the pumpkin he spoke clearly; " Sementis medicates." The pumpkin began to grow a little bit, and fast. It was interesting to watch. At the end of the lesson, Rune retrieved his things from the greenhouse before going up to the castle for a much needed shower.

Marlow walked to the Herbology Greenhouse, a little upset that all year they would simply be learning about mandrakes. They were interesting roots, but Marlow was not sure how much work she could put into a single thing. She would rather branch out and learn more about all the magical plants. At least the exam will be easy if it's only on mandrakes She thought happily as she took her seat in the Greenhouse, next to her mandrake.

As the profesor spoke about the mandrake's stage, Marlow took down a few notes in her journal. She was surprised they had to name the root, after all wouldn't they just be cut up and made into medicine. She hoped this would not mean that she would get attached to the ugly root, but it's always possible when you name something.

Marlow put down her pencil and journal as she went to go get some food for her mandrake. She knew she needed to feed it pellets, pressed down into the soil. As the young girl did this, she tried to think of a name. For some reason she liked the name Rupert. And last name..umm She thought trying to come up with a clever last name. Instead she ended up just combining root and mandrake to create a simple last name. However Rupert seemed to enjoy his name, or maybe it was just the food.

Once completely fed, Marlow went to go get the watering can, giving Rupert a good amount of water. With that, Marlow packed up her items and left the greenhouse.

Mandrake Journal said:
Toddler Stage:
-Next Stage: Childhood Stage
-Like Damp Soil, Shade to Sunlight, and Occasional Food
-Feed Twice a Day
-Place pellets in compost
-Name Given: Rupert Rootdrake

One
Lysander had been looking forward to a more hands on subject, so when Professor Carter told the class the semester would mostly be lectures, his expression visibly fell. That wasn't why he'd wanted to take Herbology. It was the one subject he could rely on not revolving around talking and written work. Trust Lamedon to ruin that, too. He sighed, slumping back in his seat to listen to the man rattle on about St Mungos. He was familiar with the hospital - Alexei's dad worked there, and he'd visited before. The more the professor spoke, the more confusing it got. He'd been to St Mungos, but he'd never been to London. It wasn't too clear, but he soon caught on that there was another, completely different St Mungos in Britain, sort of like how they had their own Hogwarts. He jotted down some notes, circling the homework to plan to do later, if he could get around to it. He had enough homework from his non-practical subjects to catch up on as it was.

Two
Lysander was pleased to see that, though Carter had said they'd mostly be enduring lectures, he did have a plant to show them. It was ugly looking, for sure, and Lysander couldn't take his eyes off of the gross boils covering it. The instruction to never poke them only made him want to try and poke one all the more, just to see what would happen. He took some notes, highlighting the fact its pus would cause rashes if not diluted. It sounded awful, but it also had the potential to be funny. He brightened up when the man told them all that they'd be planting and harvesting the bubotuber. He was glad the semester wasn't wasted entirely on lectures, and couldn't wait to grow a new plant, as well as being able to see what happened when you did break a boil. He jotted down a few more notes, and packed up his writing utensils to leave as the class was dismissed for the day.

Lesson 1

Vi forgot her opinion on Herbology, she wasn't sure if she liked it or not. Those previous years in the subject were a blur to her at this point. Thankfully, Professor Castillo allowed her to take his class. Which was great for her if she was still to pursue her career in protecting the citizens in New Zealand. Vi arrived to her first Herbology lesson, taking a seat away from the front of the classroom. Until she can catch up with her formers years in Herbology, Vi will avoid the front seats at all cause. The Professor started them off with what they will be learning this year. Dangerous plants, fun. Like wolfbane? What's more dangerous than a werewolf, a plant? Vi couldn't take him too seriously despite dodging him on the first day. The Slytherin sighs, writing whatever he was saying down. She sure some of it would be useful. All of it, actually. Why is this subject one of the requirements? Vi left the greenhouse once they were dismissed.

O

Lesson 2

Vi arrived to Herbology for her second lesson this semester. She went to the same seat as last week, taking out her journal from her bag once she sat down. Vi listens while Professor Castillo started off with today's lesson. Vi tries to follow along, his 'personality' was a peculiar type that was off putting to her. Like, who makes a light hearted joke about murder?! Vi should get used to his type, she will be working in a field filled with his kinds. What he said just make her stomach go into knots, and, is it bad that he reminded her of her stepdad? Who she sort of still respected. Sort of.

Notes said:
Flitterbloom and Devil's Snare look alike.
Always check plants in case someone is trying to murder you.
Fire and light is the Devil's Snare weakness.
Devil's Snare is good for an alarm system.

Eventually, Vi followed her classmates and their professor to the other greenhouse. Vi observed the Devil's Snare from afar, not interested in knowing how similar it looked like Flitterbloom. She took down some notes in the dark as best as she could. Once they were dismissed, Vi set off to do some much needed studying.

O+3 for notes

Lesson 3

Vi was hoping today Professor Castillo would do more lecturing than the hands on stuff. She was quickly disappointed they would be doing the exact opposite. Not entirely the exact opposite, but they were going to visit the other greenhouse. Vi flops down her seat, sighing as she pulls out her notebook from her bag. She made a face at one of the screechsnaps. The plant caught her expression and mimicked Vi in return in it's screeching manner. "I'm not bringing that to my dorm. There's no way in heck that I am," Vi muttered under her breath. Vi tended to the plant as quickly as possible. Rehousing the noisy maker into another pot, she buried it in some dirt and watered it like she was told to.

Following that activity, Vi wanders behind her classmates and professor to the other greenhouse. Vi stood away from the stump like plant. She knew very well not to get close and she was right to do so. "Please Merlin, let there be other divisions in law enforcement because I'm clearly not going to fight that," Vi worded under her breath. In time they were dismissed and Vi went to the library to make sure she won't have to deal with something like that in the near future. She bloody hope not.

O

Lesson 4

Fanged plants, that was today's lesson. Out of all the things in the world to learn about...They looked quite ridiculous. Vi took down some notes as their professor introduce the class to the likes of Fanged Geraniums. In a way she was relieved because she thought all these years in potions (if she were to actually remember a fanged based recipe) fangs didn't come from vampires. That the fangs they used in potion classes were from plants? Vi wrote it all down. She questioned the information given but she wrote it down anyways. Whatever got her to the end of these lessons, Vi will learn it all. For the rest of the class period Vi sat observing and the left the classroom once they were dismissed.
O

Lesson 5

A field trip? Great. Vi was rather okay to know they were going on a field trip. Somewhere outside of the school, despite it being the sanctuary to observe more plants. At least they weren't in that dark, dreaded greenhouse. Vi hadn't gone out of school since she started the new semester, so a field trip sounded dandy to her. Vi humored their professor and grabbed a bingo card. She followed her peers and the professor to the portkey. Vi grabbed on, her world started spinning all around her. Transported, Vi landed on her knees over a patch of green grass. Passing her hands to few minor scratches and dirt, Vi was quickly on her feet. She bend the bingo card some and then began her search for these plants. She journey through different habitats looking near and far for these plants. None of them came easy to her, a few times Vi had to ask someone if what she was observing was one of the plants on the bingo card. Twice she was lucky to have been nearby when one of her peers identity two plants on the bingo card. Vi marked as much as she can and handed over her card at the end of the period.

O

Lesson 6

Vi sat down quickly and took out her notebook. Reviewing her notes, that's something she can do. And go over flashcards she bought from the sanctuary to help with her studying. Vi took advantage of the entire period, she never once looked up to see what everyone else was doing. She kept her focus on her notes and the flashcards. They were extremely helpful. Once the period ended, Vi took her studying to the library. She tucked the flashcards away, not wanting to let anyone see them. She didn't care, but, she actually cared. Besides, little Adorah will surely annoy her about it.

The end of the semester was right around the corner, and Saira wasn't too excited about it. On one hand, there were the exams and on the other there was the break, both she wasn't looking too forward too. It didn't help that she would have to wait another year to have to take herbology again either. She felt sad about having to say goodbye to her mandrake, even though he was annoying and seemingly rude, she wondered if some mandrakes ever got to age up, maybe beyond the stages that they were learning.

Saira put on her gloves and robe, grabbing a ribbon to tie up her hair. She made sure her earmuffs were securely on top of her ears and then brought her mandrake's pot up to the work tables. It was significantly heavy now compared to how they were in their first lessons. The young slytherin made sure to watch carefully as Professor Carter pulled his mandrake out of his pot and focused on hers. She sighed, Saira knew she wasn't exactly muscular or strong but she hoped she could pull this off (pun intended). Saira pulled on the mandrake by the base of the leaves, tugging firmly. It took a while before the Chad (Previously Willford) finally popped out of his pot. He struggled and attempted to (and succeeded) bite her multiple times. She finally got it into the new pot and covered the mandrake with soil quickly. Once he was covered, she inserted some food pellets and watered him. Saira took out her journal and wrote her last entry.

Today Chad (previously Willford) will be heading off to St. Mungo's, I don't know where that is but apparently they'll be chopped off to help people, which I think it quite sad but at the same time I guess it's necessary. This was a fun experience save for the biting and the profanities that Chad(previously Willford) were shouting.

Selene made her way to the herbology greenhouse. it was just starting to show the first signs of spring. she took her seat and noticed a row of plants writhing away over at the other side of the greenhouse. She listened as the professor explained how to repot them. it was almost useful that they let you know if you messed up. she moved it to the not pot and it squirmed nd resisted to begin with, but once it realised it had moe space it seemed to settle down. next, she added some water and fertiliser using the squirming as an indication as to when she had done enough of each. once that was done the cleaned her hands thinking that the class was over. however, it seemed like there was still more to come. she listened followed the proffessor as he lead them into the dangerous greenhouse and stopped them a little way away from a stump. had the plant been cut down? it didn't take her long to find out. as the professor explained that the Snargaluff was a carnivorous plant and ate people. the speed at which the vine came out of it was impressive. she liked plants liked gardening but there was something about the plants in here that creeped her out. she decided not to explore too far and instead just watched the Snargaluff until it was time to leave.
O

Selene made her way to the greenhouse she hoped that they wouldn't be in the dangerous one today. that place made her skin crawl. she took her seat and waited for class to start. she was glad that they would be staying here for the lesson. she listened to the explanation about the fanged geraniums they sounded interesting she had seen them as ingredients for a couple of potions and she was sure Helia had pointed them out in a stir fry recipe in her favourite chef's book. apparently, it added a bit more bite along with the ginger and chilly. when it was time to go she got a watering can and looked at her Snargaluff. it seemed okay she gave it a little more water pausing the flow when it started to squirm. then she went over to the geraniums. she took her wand and froze one of them that looked a little sad at the end of the leaves and began to pour. stopping when it started to shiver meaning that her spell was wearing off. once the class was over she headed back up to the castle ready for some lunch.
