Wyatt was practically giddy at the thought of escorting Amber to the Yule Ball. He didn't quite believe that she had accepted his invitation that he had actually still been trying to convince her after she had agreed to come and it had thrown him for quite a loop so he wanted things to go well. The Gryffindor boy thought to bring her a flower because he'd seen it done in movies before but she wouldn't have anywhere to put a flower so instead the boy sent her one earlier in the evening with a note as if his crush on her was not obvious enough. The boy hoped it hadn't embarrassed her any or that Noctowl, his owl, hadn't bitten her which was a nasty habit his bird had to demand treats. Now though the boy waited for Amber outside of the Great Hall as was exceedingly common for the boys to do. Truth told he saw some girls who were pretty but he had eyes only for the Hufflepuff who he smiled at the minute he spotted her.

Amber was over the moon. She couldn't believe she was actually going to the ball with a boy as nice as Wyatt! She had been braiding part of her hair when an owl had appeared at her window with a flower. Her fear of owls had been forgotten and she had taken the flower from it with a blush on her face, her heart beating faster. Maybe he really liked her! She hadn't been sure what to do with it, should she bring it? Leave it behind? After contemplating for a moment she had compromised and braided it into her hair, hoping Wyatt would see she appreciated it.

Her mind went to Ainsley as she made her way down to the Great Hall, she hadn't seen much of her friend and she hoped the other girl was alright. Those thoughts soon left her head as she made her way to the Great Hall, where a lot of people were milling around, either entering to enjoy the festivities or leaving to go outside or elsewhere. There were also a lot of boys waiting for their dates, and the first thing Amber noticed was that some of these girls had dresses that seemed a lot more glamorous and mature than her own. She wondered if Wyatt would think she looked childish. Just as she started to worry about this, she saw him. He had spotted her too and was smiling at him. She smiled back broadly and walked over to him, her worries forgotten. "Hi." She said, feeling suddenly shy. "I got your flower." She added, a bit unnecessarily. "Thank you so much, it's beautiful!" He looked really nice, and she blushed. "You look great."

Ainsley couldn't make up her mind about whether to go to the Yule Ball at all. On the one hand, it felt silly to sit all by herself and do nothing when she was here anyway, but on the other... Amber would be there. With that boy. And not with her. She had been avoiding Amber for what already felt like an eternity, time dragging on like it never had before, time slowing to a crawl every time Ainsley was reminded again. Every time she remembered Amber had a boyfriend it felt like the first time, the threads of the world coming undone around her all over again. It felt like the world would never fit together right again, like the pieces were all jumbled up in the wrong shapes and she didn't know how to make the world work.

Ainsley didn't realise how late she had stayed outside - she didn't think she could bear being around Amber while she was getting ready for the ball - until it was starting to get dark, and she was so wrapped in her own thoughts that she didn't notice the people gathering outside the Great Hall until it was too late. Ainsley was still dressed in a plain skirt and t-shirt from spending time out by the lake, but she found herself standing outside the wretched ball as it was starting, surrounded by couples greeting one another and girls in long, elegant gowns that would have enchanted her on any other day, under any other circumstances.

And there she was, of all the luck. Amber looked beautiful, of course she did. She was glowing with happiness, and seeing the brilliance of that glow directed at some boy made Ainsley sick to her stomach. Ainsley would have given anything to be on the receiving end of that smile, to be the one sharing this night with her. But the sight that made Ainsley turn away, made it too much to watch, was the flower woven into Amber's hair. Ainsley hadn't worn flowers in her own hair for days now, but it was a visceral reminder that she was still there in Amber's mind, that Amber thought of her, but she would still prefer some boy, some nobody who had swept into her life and apparently managed to surpass Ainsley so suddenly.

Stomach turning and eyes filling with tears again Ainsley tried to slip past them, making a beeline for the stairs up to her dorm, desperate to get away from this, never to see it again, even though the sight of Amber smiling at him was seared into her mind already.

((Unless either of you want to stop her, Ainsley's out & away))

Wyatt took Amber in with his eyes, a smile on his lips and a blush on his cheeks. She was beautiful in a way he'd never seen before and the boy could not believe his luck that she would spend the night with him before the holidays. He noticed that she had the flower he'd sent in her hair and though that hadn't been his plan he thought that it made Amber sweeter to have done this. It felt like a secret between them somehow but a secret he was happy to keep. "Hi," he said fidgeting with the cuff of his jacket as Wyatt greeted her until he realized how dumb he must have looked being so nervous and overexcited with Amber. He was far too preoccupied by her to notice if anyone else had seen how much of a bumbling fool he was certain to appear as he said, "I'm glad you liked it." He knew that in proms people got corsages but he felt that the Yule Ball and prom were very different so he had picked up the prettiest flower he had seen growing in the Wild Patch - although he didn't know the name of it. He did well in Herbology but he was far from getting to be a leader in the Wild Patch because the club was all about flower crowns - which he knew Amber looked great in - which didn't appeal to him outside of present moment. Wyatt nervously smiled at Amber's compliment and said, "Thanks, Am. You look so pretty." With that Wyatt offered her his arm and asked, "Shall we?" He had hardly noticed anyone else and so he was excited to get into the Great Hall to enjoy their night.

Amber looked at Wyatt and he looked at her, and she felt like a princess in a fairytale. She thought it was very cute how he fidgeted with the cuff of his jacket. From the corner of her eye she saw a familiar shade of red as someone passed them in the other way, was it Ainsley? She turned her head to see but other people around them blocked most of her view. She saw another flash of the same red hair but couldn't be completely certain that it was her friend. She bit her lip, hesitating for a moment. Maybe she should go make sure? But even if it was Ainsley, her leaving didn't necessarily mean she was still upset. And surely Ainsley would have said hello if she had seen her, right? Unless she would rather not see Amber at all. It still hurt to think how she had walked away from her the last time. Amber didn't want to be rejected like that again.

Reluctantly she turned back to Wyatt who complimented her. She smiled at him gratefully. She liked his nickname for her a lot. "Thank you!" She said with some forced cheer in her voice. She took his arm with a smile and squeezed it slightly. "Yes! Lets go!" She glanced back once more before making her way into the hall with Wyatt.

She gasped softly at the sight of the decorations, the snow falling down, the tree. She beamed. "Oh, wow! Look!" She looked at him with an excited smile. "What should we do first?"

Wyatt did notice Amber's brief distraction but pushed that away when she took his arm and squeezed him. The beater tried to stop himself from blushing which was a losing battle as he walked with Amber into the Great Hall. He thought it looked pretty but as he looked over at his date while snow flakes fell onto her cheeks she looked much prettier but it was cheesy to say such a thing so the boy who was nervous grinned as she pointed towards the tree. "Woah," he agreed. Although he'd gone to two Yule balls before this he was always surprised at how large the Christmas tree was and even more of a surprise was the fact that it had presents under the tree. The boy looked at his excited date and said, "Do you want to maybe see what's in those presents, dance or get a drink?" He was clearly happy for anything to be done so he looked to Amber to see what most excited her. The music was good and the room was busy but everyone seemed in such high spirits that even Wyatt was genuinely happy.

The flash of red hair didn't completely leave Amber's mind even as she admired the decorations around them with wide eyes. She held onto Wyatt's arm as they went into the hall, turning to him when he asked her what she wanted to do. It was a difficult question to answer because everything seemed like a lot of fun. But she felt most curious about the presents. "I sort of want to see what's in a present, would that be okay? It could be fun!" She smiled. "And we could see the tree from up close that way." She looked around. "I wonder if anyone we know is around yet." She said, scanning the faces around them for familiar ones. Wyatt had some friends he was very close to and she would understand if he wanted to see them. "We can dance after, maybe?"

Wyatt's grinned wide as Amber chose the exact option he'd secretly been gunning for. He always loved Christmas because opening gifts and giving them were lots of fun. Even if people felt sometimes a little strange if he sometimes used his parent's wealth on his friends. He still felt odd about Asaiah's reaction to the Christmas gift he'd given to the boy in second year. This was innocent though as it was a pure surprise to both. "Yes!" he said quickly. As they walked towards the tree together the fourth year said, "I know Asaiah and Marisol are probably around." With that thought the boy became a little nervous because he felt sure that the two would give her the third degree like Marisol had for most girls that came close to Asaiah. He didn't know how she'd be about him with Amber but the boy was hopeful. Even more, he hoped that Amber would prefer to check on her friends first. "What about your friends? I don't really know any younger years except my sister and a few on the Quidditch team," he said, before quickly adding, "And you!"

Amber followed Wyatt to the Christmas Tree, eager to see what was in the presents. Amber was glad he hadn't dismissed her idea as childish or silly. In fact, he seemed as excited as she was. His grin was cute and she smiled back at him. She looked around for Wyatt's friends, fairly certain she would recognize them at least vaguely. If she was honest, she would sort of like to meet them, but Wyatt changed the subject fairly quickly so she wasn't sure if he wanted them to meet her. Maybe he was embarrassed? She hoped not. "I would like to meet them." She said with a small smile, hoping he wouldn't dismiss it. "But it can be after the ball too! I like to spend time with you now." He asked her about her friends, which reminder her painfully of Ainsley. She felt a knot in her stomach at the thought. "I haven't really seen any of my friends around." She said with a shrug. "I'm not sure if ...my best friend even came, but we might run into Evelyn or Flavio. They're in my year." They had reached the tree and Amber smiled, eager to get back to the fun subject of the presents. "You can pick one first?" She told him with a smile.

Wyatt smiled and put a hand on Amber's as she told him that she would like to meet his friends. In truth he wanted to introduce them but that didn't make him any less nervous. "They can be mean but the really do mean well," he warned with a smile. "You'll love them," Wyatt added as if this was going to quell any anxiety that might have begun to bubble because of what he'd just said. He hoped it would help, anyway because his friends were his family. As Amber said she wanted to spend time with him, he knew it should have been obvious but his cheeks burned bright red. "We'll get to them," the blushing boy said, clearly agreeing that he wanted to spend time with Amber too. He nodded as she spoke about her friends and said, "Is she not much into dances?" This was fair because Wyatt had skipped the ball the year previous too so he felt no judgement on it. As Amber suggested that he picked a gift first and the boy was about to say that she ought to go first when he got a wicked smile and said, "I'll only pick first if I pick yours and you pick mine. This way it'll be like giving each other gifts." The boy hoped she would agree as he looked over the presents wondering if she would be okay with that.

"I wonder where they get trees this big," the boy said because the tree was really the largest thing he'd ever seen. "Do you think there is a wizard market for really ridiculously big trees or does Hogwarts have a guy who supplies it?" Wyatt asked while he looked at the presents, all small and neatly wrapped while he picked one in a little box. Curiously the boy shook the present with a toothy smile, reminiscent of a much younger Wyatt who would run into his families living room when Santa had come and magic was only for Santa and the tooth fairy. Before pixies, dementors and werewolves were even on his radar. It had been simple and with Amber it felt simple. Effortless and fun so the boy waited for Amber to pick too so they could exchange gifts.

Amber was a bit surprised to hear Wyatt said his friends could be mean, but it was honest. Of course, really everyone could be mean. She still wanted to meet them. "I'm sure I will!" She said with a grin. "I've seen them around, but I don't think I've talked to them." She smiled. "Maybe after the holidays if we don't get the chance to tonight. We could all hang out... if you want to. If they want to." She didn't want to assume, but she hoped Wyatt would agree.

She shrugged her shoulders when Wyatt asked if Ainsley wasn't into dances. They had gone together in their first year and they had had a wonderful time. She somehow didn't want to tell him that. "I think she wasn't really in the mood." She said after a short pause, not sure what else to say.

Wyatt's suggestion about picking gifts for each other made her smile. It was a good idea. "Sure!" She said. She answered his question about the tree first. "Don't you think they take a regular tree and use a spell on it to make it big?" She asked, looking at him. "Would that work?" Amber smiled at Wyatt as he picked one of the gifts and shook it, she giggled before bending down to pick up her own. Christmas had never been her favorite holiday, but she had always loved the anticipation of opening a present. Amber picked up one of a similar size to Wyatt's. She resisted the urge to shake it as well, though she weighed it in her hand. She smiled and held it out to him. "I hope it's a good one." She said with a small laugh.
