It didn’t matter to Mhairi that it was still winter, and that the temperature of the water around her would be very unlike the lake they visited at home. Her mind had been occupied for the last few hours, and dressed in loose dark colourful clothing, she’d been working on her own project for the most part of the day. For years now she had created new things, making her own clothing, blankets and gardens. She loved every aspect of making things from scratch, the authenticity of something being hand made was always going to be a winner in her eyes. She tightened the final piece of twine that was holding one of the barrels onto the wooden plank. It was a little lop sided, but all the best things were, Mhairi would just have to learn to balance.

Mhairi stood up straight, admiring her handy work for a moment, before taking a breath of courage and hoping that the next step would go as well. Tugging at one of the barrels, the one that still smelt a little of the flour it had been home to in the kitchens the day before, and heaved it across the grass. Thankfully she’d not begun building it too far from the bank of the lake, so didn’t have too far to drag it before the water lapped underneath, taking its weight. She release her grip on it, watching with baited breath as it floated along the surface. The Hufflepuff had wondered whether she’d plugged all the holes, and if she hadn’t she’d soon know about it. Taking a few steps back, the seventh year wasted no time, not wanting the make shift raft to get away with her, and took a running leap. She landed in the centre of the raft, but it wasn’t without its wobbles. The blonde clung in hard to the sides of the wood, trying to steady her tiny ship, and after a few moments, she was drifting along the side of the lake. Carefully she stood, riding the still waters, proud that she was at least not yet sinking.

Shane had come to sit by the lake, the weather was changing, but it was still very much winter, but he’d sought out the silence of the lake. He was enjoying the peace and a little surprised when he noticed a girl from his year and his house appear not too far from him. He was very curious as to what she was doing. He just sat and watched it, not actually bothered by the fact this was interrupting his silence and actually just enjoyed the show. It was mostly he was trying to figure out what she was doing before she did it, but to imagine that she’d make a raft for the lake and then jump on to it was not what he’d expected. He found himself laughing lightly at it. At the antics of the girl. He was at least pleased that he both near to see it and to be near just in case something went wrong and he needed to be the one to help out. He stood up as the raft came near to where he was, and waved at the girl upon it. ”That was really impressive,” he took out his wand and conjured up a flower before throwing her the flower, doing as they had once with woman and handkerchiefs when the men went off on the ships -though he was also perhaps just thinking of the end of theatre performances with the flowers. He had a flirty smile on his expression, just watching with a keen. He hadn’t noticed it from afar but the girl was beautiful.

Mhairi was realising that it would have been a good idea before now, to figure out what she was going to use to steer, because the thought of drifting out towards the middle of the lake was not a pleasant one. Thankfully the wind seemed to be on her side at least for the time being, allowing her just to gentle bump against the river bank every now and then before bobbing a few feet away and back again. She looked up with a smile on her face when she spotted someone sat on ground, although he soon stood up and the closer she got, the more she realised that it was a boy from her own house. They'd never shared any lessons, never shared any mutual friends or interests, but they did share a house and a year, which meant he was vaguely familiar. The seventh year caught the flowers that came her way, wondering if it was just a happy accident that he knew exactly what she liked. The blonde took his theatrics in good spirit, mimicking with her own level of enthusiasm, a curtsy. He was too kind. Taking her own wand from her pocket, she began to write out in the air, "Thank you. Perhaps you'd care to join me?" she added with a silent chuckle and a flirty shrug. If he hadn't been here, she would probably have had to summon something, or create some kind of steering mechanism from what she already had on board, but the girl was more than happy having succeeded in her attempt to even be afloat and so she was going to make the most of it. She beckoned him over, wondering if he would be courageous enough to take a leap too.

Shane was quite pleased when his actions towards her were well received, he couldn’t help the light confusion when she took her wand and wrote in the air. Asking if he would like to join her. He looked at her little raft and then the distanced between him and her, and thought about it. It wasn’t like he couldn’t swim, he could, but it just seemed a little risky, but she was beckoning him over and she was very pretty. They were in the same house and year, but he had never really interacted with her much, though it wasn’t like he interacted with people much anyone, only a few people did he spend more time with than and few occasions with. So it would make sense that he didn’t particularly know her. The hufflepuff decided that it was and would be completely worth it. So, he nodded and motioned a little for her to move out of the way. He took a little run and leapt on to the raft, surprising himself by reaching it. His face erupted into a small but very real smile. He then glanced up towards the girl and gave a little smirk, ”Thanks,” he said, wiping the smile from his face and instead looking at her with a far more flirty expression. He took off his shoes and socks and levitated them back to the shore, he was quick to then also roll up his trousers to prevent them from getting too wet. ”I’m Shane,” he introduced, ”Are you the captain of this ship?” he asked with a flirty tone.

Mhairi was debating in her head whether or not she thought he'd do it. If he missed, the water would be very cold indeed. The seventh year followed his direction and kept out of his line, grinning as he back up to make a jump. As he landed, the boat rocked, and her hands flew out to him to steady them both for a moment. She watched silently as he began to take off his shoes and socks, wondering why she hadn't thought of that sooner. She copied suit, and because of such wasn't looking up at the boys face to see what he had said. Mhairi opted for the muggle technique and just threw her shoes over head towards the grass, glad that they made it to dry land. All tones were lost on the Hufflepuff, who had never heard another voice in her life, but the smile on the boys face didn't go amiss. She was about to adjust her position and write in the air again when one bare foot slipped on the plank, the combination of the plant growing on the wood that was now damp didn't create the best thing to stand on. "This very slippy ship, maybe." she joked, "I'm Mhairi," she smiled, trying not to make it too obvious that she was observing his features really rather closely. She'd not spent much time with others asides from Hudson, and sometimes she wondered whether the Ravenclaw was nervous to be around her. It was just a vibe the Hufflepuff got. It was unusual for her to be right next to someone, and her eyes kept darting over the boy beside her, watching his every move. "Does that make you my first mate?" she teased, glad for a new friend that seemed happy enough to go along with her little charade.

Shane watched as she too, took off her socks and shoes, but threw them to the bank. He looked towards her and couldn’t help but stare slightly, he’d always flirted with beautiful people, but she was leagues about others, how had he not noticed her before, neither in the great hall, nor classes or the common room. He moved to catch her when she slipped, ”Careful now,” he said, ”There’s no need to swoon,” he joked, but smiled at the name, ”That’s a beautiful name,” he told her, both telling the truth and perhaps saying a bit more than was necessary. Shane nodded, ”Aye aye captain,” he gave a fake solute to her but was grinning easily. He didn’t move much upon the raft, since there wasn’t really the space for it, but in the end, he sat down, dangling his legs into the water. He gave enough space that she could sit down, ”Come join me,” he held her gaze as he spoke. Holding out a hand to her to help her just sit, they could easily, float around the lake, just comfortably enough, the water would slowly seep everywhere, but he didn’t mind that. This was still rather different and interesting.

Something came out of Mhairi's mouth when she laughed, she could feel it, but that didn't mean she knew what it sounded like to this boy. She'd never been in the presence as someone who seemed so.. carefree.. as her before, and it was exciting. Most people didn't stick around to give her much time at all when they found that they'd couldn't exactly have an in depth conversation with her particularly easily. Her eyes lit up when he complimented her name, never having thought it as anything special before but delighted that he not only thought so, but had to courage to say it too. She was watching his face as much as she could, intrigued by him and not wanting to miss his words. The seventh year watched as he took a seat, dangling his legs into the cool water before offering for her to join too. Had Mhairi not felt like the possibility of her accidentally plunging into the water in her adventure wasn't high, she may have worn clothes more appropriate for the spring weather. She wore light clothes now though, which while were perhaps made her a little more chilly, at least if they did get soaked then they wouldn't have taken long to recover. Therefore the Hufflepuff had to slide her skirt that fell to her ankles a little higher, taking his hand in her free one to get into a position to sit beside him with her legs plunging into the darkness below, trying to keep the majority of her outfit dry. It was peaceful here, bobbing along the lake, but even more fun was the fact that she was actually experiencing something with someone else for a change, and the blonde continued to look across and smile at her classmate.
She wanted to try something that she'd never really done before, at least not with anyone that wasn't her family member. It was something important to her though, and she had a feeling that given this boy hadn't already vanished when she couldn't utter a clear word, maybe it wouldn't be so bad to give it a go. Besides, she wasn't even aware that she'd missed him introducing his name completely. She lent forward toward the water, squealing slightly when it came aboard the ship, her weight difference dunking it under for a moment. So much for the dry clothing. She resumed her original position after a moment though having retrieved what she was aiming for; some long wet grass that had been floating past. Between them, Mhairi began to tear and place the grass in an arrangement that spelt out her own name, before pointing at it followed by six hand movements. She didn't know whether he would understand that she was trying to show him the letters that spelt out his name, she'd never tried to teach anyone sign language before. Finally she pointed back at the grass and a moment later, pointed at him.

Shane couldn’t help the very real genuine smile which graced his features as she laughed, there was just something so relaxed about the girl that he was enjoying, something so sweet in the laugh. He couldn’t help the lightness in his chest, this would be nice, he’d planned for a long and lonely day but this wouldn’t be. If she was interested and willing, and willing to put up with him for a little while as they very casually floated on the lake, he would let this keep going until she grew bored. Shane couldn’t help but think that it was a good thing that the water didn’t have that many dangerous creatures in it, and of course that even if they got a little far from shore, they’d be just fine to bring themselves back. Shane kept his gaze on hers, as she kept it on him, he was unable to stop looking at her as she took a seat next to him on the raft, careful in helping her sit down next to him and just took a moment in this silence looking over her features. His smile remained his charming and flirty smile, but he also felt it was a little more genuine than most occasions, more genuine than it had felt in years.
Shane hadn’t really said anything in a while, and was unsure if he should, but before he could think of something intentionally flirty, she started moving. He leaned back a little as she leaned in to the water to grab something, preventing the weight from knocking them into the cold water and to also move out the way in case she intended to throw the water at him. Shane was a little curious as to what she was doing, especially as she tore the grass and then started to spell something out. Her own name, he looked at her and then towards her hands as she signed it to him, the indication of what she wanted was clear, and who was he to say no. He gave her a little smirk, and then raised a hand and very slowly did the letters back, giving her the option as he signed each to direct his hand into the correct position, fumbling a little with each. When he finished he leaned forward into the water and pulled out some more grass, it was wet and it chilled his body more than his feet in the water. He used the grass he’d picked out and spelt out his name underneath hers, he pointed at it and then looked back at her. Only managing to do the A of his name before shrugging a bit and pointing to her hands to show him more.

Mhairi was enjoyed feeling in tune with the Hufflepuff, and just enjoying what they had in front of them for what it was, and what they were doing. The blond watched his hand movements with a smile, that widened when he tried to copy the letters. She put her own, now damp and cold hands out, to adjust his fingers into the correct position, doing her best to demonstrate how each one was done. She believed he understood that is was sign language, and she hoped that meant he knew she couldn't hear him. The seventh year counteracted his own weight shift too, curious to know whether he was about to copy her, and sure enough he carefully spelt out his own name between them too. "Shane." This time it wasn't communicated by anything but sound. The name was one that she had come across before, which allowed her to speak it out loud. For all she knew her voice was not much more than a monotone whisper, but his name rolled off the tongue quite easily. One day she hoped to be able to hear, but if not, then she hoped to be able to speak with as much confidence as Professor Chamberlin seemed to. If Mhairi didn't know any better, she wouldn't have have realised he was in the same situation.

Mhairi did her best to show Shane how to spell out his own name, once again copying the words. They only had two letters shared between them, so she would have been very impressed if he managed to remember all eight hand positions so quickly. It wasn't too difficult to manipulate someone's hands into the position they needed to be in, but Mhairi was still unsure whether she'd be able to do that for an entire group of students. Nevertheless it had helped her to be able to try, and she hoped that it had helped him too to understand things from her perspective. She relaxed once more, tilting her head a little to look across at him inquisitively, a smile on her face as she tried to figure him out. She picked up the flower that she'd earlier laid down while taking a seat, and peered at it a little closer. Magic was still quite surreal to her. How someone could summon something so real out of nothing but desire. Mhairi spent so much of her time either outside in nature or growing nature, rather than with her head in her books, that the only spells she knew were those taught in class. Nothing would compare to watching something grow over time, nurturing it and see it develop, but holding a flower in her hand that had skipped that entire process had sparked her curiosity. She lay down the flower once more, hands in the air and moving as slowly and clearly as she could. "Teach me?"

Shane smiled as she said his name, watching it roll off her tongue. The boy watched her show him how to do the motions with his hands, and he copied them, once again giving her the opportunity to fix his hands. Once they’d gone over it, he did it again, spelling out his own name and then doing hers again. He knew his fingers were probably still flimsy, still barely actually able to get it correctly. The hufflepuff felt pretty proud of himself when he finished. It would be interesting to learn more, to learn to flirt while not saying a thing, who knows what he might run into in the future. He would welcome this. This little thing that he could learn. Shane watched her pick up the flower he had conjured, he had enjoyed learning that spell, and he knew it would always be useful to him. He would always find an excuse to use it. The boy wasn’t sure why she was looking over it so much, what interested her so much in the spell. At her words he gave a little nod, glancing at her hands as she did it, ”Okay,” he said, moving his hands to make an O shape and then a K shape, though he was sure he’d gotten the two wrong, well just not the correct actual signs for either of the letters. He took out his wand and then held it out, ”Orchideous,” he said carefully, taking more care as he said it to be sure she follow, and out of thin air came a dozen little daisies. He placed them down with the grass and used all of it to spell out the name of the spell. He’d never really taught anyone else anything, certainly not a spell, so he wasn’t sure how to really go about it.

Mhairi was certainly curious to see how he would go about teaching her a spell, and smiled when he said okay. She thought he was picking the letters up quickly, and if she hadn't known better that she'd just taught him those letters, she would have been surprised to find out that he hadn't known them for a long time. She watched his lips intently as he spoke, gaining the first part of the word, that was an easy one, although not fully understanding the second part. As he conjured up the daisies, she kept quiet and let him do what he needed to do, observing as he spelt out the word for her. Mhairi had learnt earlier than most students how to do non verbal magic, but she didn't always trust herself as it often went wrong. It would have been better to stay it out loud because if nothing else, maybe Shane could direct her as to where she went wrong too, even if she did sound a little strange when forcing the air out of her lungs. "Orchidus," is what she'd said, wand in her hand and pointing it towards an small empty area of the raft, hoping to see the flowers spring as effortlessly as he had done, although nothing came from her wand at all. Instead, the wood underneath them shot a few meters away through the water, as though someone had suddenly yanked it clean from where they were sitting. Mhairi hadn't been aware she'd been thrown into the water until she was already submerged, but luckily as the boat hadn't been far out, her feet touched the floor almost immediately and she was able to stand up to her ribs in the water. It was freezing cold, and as the Hufflepuff broke free of the surface she was coughing some of the water that had taken her by surprise. "Man overboard," she wrote in the air, with the wand that was still in her hand, and sent an apologetic smile towards Shane, hoping he hadn't had too many valuables on him.

Shane hoped that he had been able to teach her it properly, it would be in his mind a poor reflection on him if she hadn’t managed to get it. But he stayed silent, having done all that he could on the matter. He watched as she took her wand, and said the spell, but Shane knew it would be difficult to get right, couldn’t imagine how frustrating it must be for her. The spell hadn’t sprouted any flowers as they had likely both hoped it would instead Shane was plunging into the cold water. He raised his wand and cast a quick bubble head charm as he got used to the cold and tried to not splutter too much but it was somewhat unnecessary they hadn’t been far out, and Shane was able to touch the floor of the lake and stand up, with his head fully out of the water. He looked towards Mhairi, seeing that much like him, she was soaked. He smiled at her and at the words that she wrote in the air, and where he might’ve otherwise been annoyed, he wasn’t, he found himself laughing lightly, unable to help it, how soaked they both were, how much the moment had been broken, how much of a cold hard dunk he had gotten. It was her reaction to it, it was how even with them soaked to the skin everything seemed so still care free, ”I love a cold shower,” he replied with a little smile on his face. He held his hand out to her, ”Shall I help you to shore Captain?” he offered, he wasn’t sure if she’d want to go back to floating on the water, or if she’d want to swim for a little bit, he felt, he might as well, offer to help, no matter what the outcome would be.

Above everything else, Mhairi hoped that Shane hadn't broken, lost or had anything ruined by her foolishness. She knew it was always hard for her to pick up her spells, but she hadn't intended to drag him quite literally into this mess with her. She was relieved when he joked with her instead, taking his hand and offer of assistance. As much as she enjoyed the water, it wasn't the weather for it, "We'll have to come back in the summer for a swim," she joked, feeling her way back towards the lawn, careful not to tread on anything that didn't feel too steady under her feet. The seventh year still had a smile plastered to her face, grateful that they hadn't gotten themselves into any real danger, and pulling herself out of the water she turned to help her companion out too, still holding on to his hand tightly until they were in the clear. With the adrenaline of the last few moments running through her blood stream, and the cool air breezing through her wet clothes, hair half plastered to her face, the Hufflepuff lowered herself to the ground, lying back to let what little of the sun that shone through do what it needed to. She chuckled to herself, catching her breath before looking over towards Shane, wand still in her left hand. "Sorry. I need to work on that," maybe it would be easier towards the end of the year, she could only hope. She peered up into the sky, watching the clouds that passed through, no longer caring whether or not her clothes dirtied while out on the lawn.

Shane didn’t mind this, it was oddly nice to really not mind being dropped into the ice lake like he had been. It just grinned at her, ”I guess we will,” he agreed, he didn’t tend to make plans for after or to follow on from this, but he did like mhairi. He liked her spirit a lot. She was just so beautiful person to him. Shane gladly took her hand, and was careful to help back to shore. He was keeping his own feet as steadily as he could on the water’s floor. He let go of her hand as she lowered herself to the ground, and shane watched before following suit. He gave her a little smile as she sat down, leaning up on his elbows as he lay on the ground. ”That’s okay,” he replied, looking towards her, the sun wasn’t particularly warm, and his clothes were soaked through, but he didn’t mind. ”Not every day I get thrown into the water by a beautiful girl,” he joked keeping his gaze towards her with a little smile. ”I can give you more help if you want?” he then offered, ”You now with magic and words,” He knew this wasn’t what he tended to do, he never wanted to spend more time with the people he was flirting with, but if she needed this help he would. ”I’m more than just a pretty face,” he kept his tone light and flirty as he said it. Helping out, the offer felt a little heavy and he was happy to light the mood a little.

Mhairi was grinning widely at him when he’d said he guessed they would have to come back. It was unusual to find someone else on a similar wavelength of just taking events as they came, not stressing about the implications. She was glad he hadn’t seemed annoyed in the slightest about their mishap. As he called her beautiful, Mhairi’s cheeks flushed a little, having never been called that before. He’d already said her name was beautiful but seeing him call her that was something else, she gave him a nervous smile as he got comfortable beside her, a little too surprised to think of something to write in the air, but happy to watch him. She had to glance away with a blush on her cheeks when he was gazing towards her, he was especially cute when he did that and small dimples appeared. The seventh year thought about it for a few seconds, before her eyes landed back on the Hufflepuff beside her, his hair was plastered to his head a bit, the same way her own was and no doubt he was getting chilly, but maybe he had a spell for that. Mhairi reached out and ran her fingers lightly through the front of his hair, hoping that it would dry faster, but also because it felt surprised easy and natural to do so. It was only for a moment, and then she picked up her wand once more, “What have you got?” She asked, chuckling at him and urging him to show her what else he might have up his sleeve.

She kept his gaze on her and smiled at her as she ran a finger lightly though the front of his hair. He shook his head a little after she’d stopped touching it, sending little droplets of water on to the two of them. He found himself smiling regardless of how the water, the boy was sure that he’d end up with the cold, or spending most of the night shivering, but he really found that he didn’t mind, it would be fine, it wouldn’t be too bad, it might even be nice, cozying up by the fire. The teen took his wand and held it in his hand, with that he then gave a very dramatic wave and then did the drought charm on Mhairi, drying off some of her clothes in a flash, ”I think that one’s pretty good, it’s the drought charm, soaks up water from surfaces,” he gave her a little smirk and leaned in a little to her and wiping some of the water from her face, with a careful hand, moving the wand out of the way as he did so, ”All you need to do, is think about how you want water to be soaked up, and then thinking it helps it happen, theres no incantation, so it might be easier for you,” he told her, keeping his gaze on her, keeping his fingers lightly upon her face. He knew he’d already said it, but to him, she was just so beautiful to him.

Mhairi laughed when Shane shook his hair, it reminded her of when animals were trying to dry their hair and in the same sense it showered her with more droplets of water. She looked across in curiosity when he took out his wand, wondering what he was about to do, but suddenly felt a little warmer than she had seconds ago. He’d dried her clothes for her. Her hair was still a little damp but it wasn’t at though that was bothering her. It wasn’t as though anything could bother her right now as Shane lent further toward her, drying off more parts of her face gently. How had she never spent time with Shane before? She had seen him in class but only very briefly, and perhaps now she realised she had missed out on another friendship all because she hadn’t been paying him her full attention. Mhairi certainly was paying him that now, her eyes glued to him like magnets, watching every word leave his lips and then dancing over the rest of his features. She knew the spell he spoke about, this was one she had learnt in class and as a result, was able to perform it. Slowly she lifted one free hand, and lightly placed it on Shane’s chest. Her eyes flickered back from his chest to his eyes, concentrating on her objective. This was not how she’d planned for her voyage to go, but right now she couldn’t care less about that. As the material under her hand felt warm and dry under her touch, she dropped her wand to the side with a smile. Her free hand climbed a little higher, until she was able to cup his jaw and her thumb could lightly stroke his cheek. Maybe they hadn’t spoken to each other before now, but Shane was incredibly easy to be around, and she intended to make the most of that.

Shane smiled at her, he looked at the hand that was then pressed on his chest. He had a feeling that she was trying to do the spell to and he just waited as she did it. Feeling his shirt grow dry as she seemed to get the spell right. He give a little smirk as she managed it. ”Thanks,” Shane said that as she moved her hand to cup his face. He leaned into the touch and smiled at her. He liked her a lot in this moment, she was stroking his cheek and it was just so easy with her. He leaned in slightly towards her and smirked at her. He moved his hand to touch her cheek like she was touching his. He leaned in and smiled, his eyes moving to her lips easily, just taking all of her. ”I’d love to show you something else I’m good at,” The teen replied, ”I’m really good at kissing beautiful people, if you're interested,” he told her with a smirk. Shane liked kissing in general and he was sure that she would be a good kisser too, he was sure that she would be too.

Mhairi had never had anyone this close to her before, not like this. That being said it was exciting that not only was someone actually noticing her, but seemed to notice her for just doing what she loved to do anyway. It was wasn’t like anything was forced or she was pretending to be someone she wasn’t, and yet it was still her that Shane was looking at. Mhairi didn’t catch what he was saying, too close to read his lips, but it wouldn’t have mattered if she had, the outcome would have been the same. The seventh year pushed back against Shane, leaning up on her arm as she rolled further towards him until she was smiling down into his face for a second, her blonde hair falling forward creating a golden curtain. She’d never kissed anyone before now, and as her lips finally touched his she was gentle, trying to establish the right amount of pressure. It was softer than she’d ever imagined it would be, and she smiled as they kissed, before relaxing into it and letting her instincts take over.

Shane was a little surprised when she pushed back against him, and was above him. He could help the smirk on his features as she’d done this, clearly she was interested in what he was doing and he was more than interested in doing it too. She was fun, she was so beautiful, and she was just above him like a goddess. The hufflepuff leaned into the kiss as she pressed her lips to his, it was a gentle soft pressure, almost as if she was nervous, had never done it before, and really if that was what she wanted, Shane would be more than happy to meet her half way with it. He let his kissing be as soft as she was making it, letting her guide and dictate the kiss and how it was. He leaned up a little to meet her more in it, let one hand cup her face. How beautiful she was. He eventually pulled away for a moment, trying his best to catch his breath, just holding her gaze for a moment, before smiling and leaning back in for a second kiss, being as soft as she had been but with a little more urgency in his kiss this time around, looking to make it deeper than it had before, this was definitely different from when he kissed others, this wasn’t the light kissing, this wasn’t the flirty kissing. This was about as passionate in his kisses that Shane had ever been.
