Professor Styx knew that this lesson would be an easy one, which was no issue for him. Professor Styx entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts, and saw that the first years were all here and seated where they should be. They were going to be practicing dueling, and that would be a treat to them. Professor Styx waited for everyone to be silenced before he started, "Today, we will not be taking notes or enduring a lecture. We will be going over two spells, and then using them. One is called Stupefy, a stunning spell. All you would have to do is point and aim. The spell takes some concentration. Also, there is the simple blocking spell. It is Protego. It will block the spells that will be coming at you."

He leaned against the desk, and he continued, "I want you to pair up with a partner, and stand opposite of each other in the front of the room. I want you to attempt to stun each other, while the other uses the spell, Protego, to block the spell." As stated in his first lesson it was part of the rules to bring their wands with them because they would never know when they were going to be using them. "Once everyone is ready, I will instruct you to begin." It looked as though all the first years had found a partner and they were away from the desks and in front of the room. "If someone gets stunned from not using the spell Protego properly, I will revive them. Now begin." Once the practicing began, and he had to revive those that were stunned, it was time to leave. He dismissed them, without homework this time.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson.

Aonghas was settling well into the semester, it was coming a little late in it, but he knew any time was better than never and largely it was just that he’d been having some concerns and thoughts about his brother and everything that that meant. He wasn’t thinking so much about everything else, currently, he was focusing on his classes and the important aspects of Hogwarts, he knew where he stood in regards to the school and largely now with his family which had still been up in the air at the beginning of the semester and well whole school year, but not so much any more. Aonghas was getting himself together for the day, packing his bag, putting his books away, filling his utensil case with new quills and better ink. He was just getting himself together for the day ahead. Aonghas had been working hard and studying lightly, knowing that he could probably coast by this year largely on what they had covered during the classes themselves and the homework without too much extra revision. A few hours a week was proving fine for him. He got the last of the books he would need for the day and then headed out of the dorm to the class.

Aonghas headed into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took his usual spot in the room. He looked up at the professor as the man got started on his lesson. They would finally be doing some spells. He was very pleased with this. With the duelling tournament on going the young hufflepuff was keen to learn some spells, it was definitely something he wanted to do in the following year when he was finally allowed to. The hufflepuff was getting himself ready, already taking out his wand as the professor allowed them to get started. He paired up with someone and was able to be the one to start. He held the wand lightly in his hand and pointed it towards them. He was first to cast stupefy and it took a few attempts before he managed a weak version of the spell. Once he had managed that, he let the other person try as he attempted protego, which Aonghas had far greater success with. Getting the spell on the first go and only building on what he could do from there. The hufflepuff cast the spells back and forth until the professor wrapped up the class and dismissed them. Aonghas packed up his things and headed out of the room.

The room was always so much quieter before class when they were in DADA than any of the other classes Elliot had seen, almost as if some of his other classmates were holding their breath along with him until Professor Styx arrived. He listened closely as the professor outlined the lesson and spells they'd be using, an uncomfortable twist in his gut. It was always exciting to learn new spells, but Elliot wasn't sure he actually wanted to practice them on his classmates.

Reluctantly, he joined the others as everyone stood and paired up. He ended up partnering with Aonghus, shooting Lily an apologetic shrug. He really hadn't fancied the idea of trying to stun her, he was sure she'd understand. Not that he particularly wanted to stun Aonghus either, in retrospect. Heart beating rapidly, he faced Aonghus nervously, ready to cast protego first. He flinched the first few attempts, Aonghus not quite able to get the spell out until after a few tries. Elliot felt the panic when the stunning spell shot across the room, barely managing a wispy looking shielding spell. He had a feeling if Aonghus' spell had been more stable it would have punched through his shield easily. Taking a few breathes, Elliot did his best to focus when it was his turn. Something about point his wand at another student just felt wrong. After a few false starts himself, he was able to shoot off a passable stunning spell, relieved and curious watching Aonghus' much more stable shield in response. The two traded turns back and forth, their shields becoming more and more sure as the lesson progressed, though Elliot's stunning spells definitely didn't have his heart in it. He was grateful when the lesson ended, grabbing his bag and hurrying to check on Lily.

As Sophie walked into the Defence Against The Dark Arts classroom she took her usual seat in the room and made sure to take out her writing equipment yet again before reverting her attention to the front of the room. This was not needed however as the professor announced that they would be learning a couple of new spells. The girl was ecstatic and jumped in her seat as the professor carefully explained to them what to do. It felt weird having a practical class in such a cold environment with a professor that was definitely not as laid-back as some of the others, but she was thankful for it nonetheless. After all, the subject inevitably had to have at least some practical lessons in order for everyone to properly learn the syllabus. The girl paired up with a fellow Ravenclaw from her dormitory and let them try to stun her first. She quickly blocked the spell with a wave of her wand and beamed at herself. She then attempted to stun her partner but they had also successfully blocked it. This went back and forth the whole lesson and it had seemed like the shortest one yet. She was smiling as she left, heading straight to her next class.

Selene headed to the defence against the dark arts class. she was not a fan of this lesson. it wasn't that the professor was scarey, though he was a little bit. it was more the fact that it was a primarily practical class and whilst she was okay at charms she was not good at Transfiguration and she got nervous about casting spells. and when they did have a theory week the topics were scary. the last one on unforgivable curses had given her a week of nightmares.
She took a seat in the defence against the dark arts classroom and listened as the professor explained the professor explained the class today. she look at as Sophie who she was sitting next to and smiled. she seemed like she was partnering up with Sophie. She took her place at one side of the classroom and let Sophie try first to stun her. she was surprised by two things. first Sophie could cast the spell first time and secondly, she actually managed to create a shield. she was glad she had practised the other night with Keira. when it came to her turn to cast the spell she managed to produce a few sparks the first time but nothing more than that. they practised a few more times. sophie was much better than her at casting the spell until one time she was too slow and she got hit by the stunning spell she was knocked backwards off her feet and had to wait for the processor to come and reverse the spell. a couple of time later she managed to actually cast the spell and send something more substantial than sparks towards Sophie. this must have been a fluke as by the time she had finished the class she had only managed to cast the stunning spell once. She packed up and left quickly. she would have to find a way to practice that spell. pr maybe she would ask keira for help.
