First Year Charms Lesson Three

Mallory couldn’t believe the year was already halfway over. She really couldn’t. She thought she really had been doing well, none of the students seemed to outwardly hate her, though she could sense several that seemed annoyed in classes. That was to be expected, however, she didn’t expect every student to adore classes. She hummed lightly, setting up the classroom for that days lesson, eager for class to begin.

Mallory smiled as she let the first years into the room, waiting until they had all settled in her seats. “Good morning, my dears, I trust all of you did your reading.” She was quite sure there were several students that hadn’t, however, so she flicked her wand, the chalk raising behind her to write out in an elegant script. “Wingardium Leviosa,” she began, starting to pace a bit around the room. “This is the charm that does what?” She asked, motioning for a student to answer. “Very good, dorogoy, two points for you.” She smiled, walking slowly across the front of the room, her hands crossed. “Wingardium Leviosa is the charm that will allow objects to fly. It is a controlled flight, it requires your concentration and the object you are enchanting will follow the trajectory of your wand. Can someone tell me the motion for this?” She asked, calling on a different student.

That’s correct, excellent answer. Two points for you.” She smiled warmly, continuing her pace in front of the room. “The wand motion for this is swish and flick. Let’s try that now, shall we?” Mallory raised her wand, having the students copy her in the motion. “Of course, breaking your concentration breaks the spell, but there is another counter to your spells. Can someone tell me the counterspell?”

Mallory called on a different student, smiling warmly at them as they answered. “That’s correct, Finite is the appropriate counterspell. Two points,” She took a moment to smooth out her lilac robes, adjusting one of the lilac buds that dotted her braid. “Now, for the next little bit, please do concentrate and practice this spell. When you have successfully lifted your feathers,” she waved her wand and feathers appeared in front of each student, “I would like you to practice using finite to end your spell.”

Mallory let them practice for a little bit, before calling for their attention again. “I notice some of you have already made great strides with this spell already. For those of you who feel comfortable- or confident enough- feel free to practice this spell on heavier objects. Please be careful, however, and try not to hurt yourself or your classmates. While I have your attention, please take note that your homework for today is, of course, reading the chapter on the Accio spell as we will be doing that one next week. I would also like you to go over both Lumos and Wingardium Leviosa and give me two examples for each spell around how you can use this in everyday life,” She smiled warmly at the students, letting them get back to practicing when she was finished speaking.

The class eventually began to draw to a close, and Mallory soon dismissed her students, complimenting them on their work and taking a note to herself of who could stand to use improvement and who was excelling.

A spell to levitate things sounded pretty useful, Jingyi could already think up some uses for the spell and how he could make the most of knowing something like this. It was far more interesting than a spell to make his wand light up, anyway. He didn't pay much attention to the questions they were being asked, leaving that for someone else to worry about as he just wanted to move on and start practicing already. While a feather was a pretty boring place to start, he was confident that he could master it quickly and then move on to practice on something a little more interesting. And when they were finally allowed to start, he was right, a feather turned out to be two easy as he lifted it up off the desk on his first try. So, he decided to quickly ditch the feather and try and move his textbook. The textbook was a lot harder than the feather was, but by the end of the lesson, he was managing to get it a good three feet off the desk. Pleased with his progress, Jingy grinned as he put his wand away before grabbing his things and leaving the classroom.

The semester was halfway over already, shockingly, and Xinyi was slowly starting to relax at school. It wasn’t so bad here, but it did make it more and more obvious to him how far away he and Jingyi were from each other. It hurt a bit, and he wished he knew how to fix it, but he had no idea how to reach out to his brother. He sighed, gathering his things and hurrying down to class. He sat in the back, away from his twin. He didn't bother answering the question, still feeling too shy. He practiced the spell, getting the hang of it fairly quickly. He gathered his things as they were dismissed, leaving the room with the others.

Despite Maisie’s misgivings, she was enjoying her time at school. She was interacting with her classmates, and had even joined the sisterhood and the arts club, and the Heta Omega. It might seem like a lot, but she loved the challenge. She could absolutely join all these clubs and do well in her school! Next year she even planned to join the dueling club. That would be fun, really mastering her wand. After she stopped at the wand shop every day over break to pester the man that had talked to her about her wand, of course.

She took her seat in charms, pleased they were going to be learning a new spell. She mastered the spell easily, then spent the rest of class trying to make the feather dance. She hummed happily, gathering her things and leaving as they were dismissed.

The third week at Hogwarts meant that apparently the Halloween ceremony was coming up soon, and Evie was a little bit lost at how it was all going to work. Her sister told her to simply just prepare a costume for it and then she could attend the event, but Evie had no idea where to begin with one. She would have preferred being told this a lot earlier and was a little bit frustrated at her lack of preparedness. Shrugging, the girl just hoped it would come to her soon as she made her way to her classes.

Evie entered the charms classroom, smiling over at the professor as she took her seat within the room. This subject was beginning to be one of her favourites, not only because she actually had a friend in this class, but also because she had learnt a new spell every lesson so far and they were all pretty fun. The Gryffindor took a seat and listened as the professor went over the spell that they would be learning. It was a simple one, and could definitely help her when she pulled some future pranks. She took out her wand when instructed and attempted to make the feather in front of her fly. She used the swish and flick method just as the professor had done and said the incantation. It took a couple of tries but eventually the feather began to take flight. It was hard to keep it up for a long time, as it required a lot of concentration, but Evie had a good first start on the spell, and made a mental note to practice it during her spare time if she remembered to get herself better at it. She quickly left the classroom when dismissed.

Leonardo wasn’t sure why a school needed a whole dance and feast to celebrate halloween, it seemed like an over celebration. Surely a nice dinner would be as nice. He’d over heard older student discussing what they would wear to it and Leonardo was puzzled as to why. Why would a school put on a celebration with costumes and everything else, surely it was silly? He couldn’t be the only one to think that it was silly. He didn’t intend to go, well, he intended to go check it out but didn’t intend to go into the hall. He didn’t have a costume to start and he didn’t have any clothes that could then become a costume of some kind. But it was silly anyway, they were at the school to study and learn not to have fun. Leo was pushing the thoughts about the celebration out of his mind and focusing on the important aspect, actually getting ready for said classes. He got his books, the right homework and his wand, making sure in each instance that he was only taking what he needed, if he had to come back he would just have to come back and get it. Leonardo headed out of the dorm and to class.

Leonardo walked into the charms classroom, and hesitated at the door before taking the same spot as previous weeks. He just always assumed that someone was going to take his seat in the room. He looked up at the professor as she got started and he nodded to indicate he’d done the reading. He didn’t raise his hand to answer the question, if only because he hadn’t been quick enough. The professor showed them the wand movement and with the class he copied it. Then the professor told them how to end the spell, and he nodded along, since he might lose concentration but he might also just need to end it with a spell, it would be good to know how to. The hufflepuff then with the feather that appeared in front of him he got started. It took a few tries but he concentrated and said, ”Wingardium Leviosa,” he watched it rise up and eventually settled, he concentrated on it for a moment before eventually saying, ”Finite,” and it dropped. He practiced the two spells over and over until the professor wrapped up the lesson, telling them what they’d be covering in the next week and homework. Leo packed up his things and left the room.

Molly had quite enjoyed and liked charms. The professor had seemed nice, and she had known a few people in her class. It had been one of her favourite classes to do during Hogwarts. The Hufflepuff had skipped towards her charms classroom, took a seat in her usual spot and took out the things she needed for her class.

When the professor got started with the lesson, she had asked the class about what the Wingardium Leviosa charm did and the Hufflepuff immediately put her hand up. "I think the charm helps make an object fly?" Molly answers unsurely. But when the professor had told her she was correct and received two points, Molly giggled quietly to herself, pleased that she had gotten it correct. The girl had made sure to take as many notes down as possible, as the professor continued with the lesson. It wasn't long before it was their turn to try out the charm as well as the counterspell. The first couple times she tried, she was struggling a bit, but eventually got the hang of it.

The professor had then let them know that they had some homework to do, and Molly had made sure to take note of it. Once the lesson was over, they were dismissed. Molly quickly packed up her things, said a quick thanks and goodbye to the professor, before heading out the door to her next class.
