Fifth Years; Lesson Four

Professor Lyra Potter had a huge cage of mice on her desk. She was sitting there next to them, but not too close. She had never been all that fond of rodents. When the students finally were settled in, she looked up and nodded to them all. "Good morning class!" Lyra said brightly at her fifth years.

Professor Potter moved in front of the class and spoke. "Today we are going to work with mice. These are a bit more difficult, since you need to not only make them disappear, but keep track of them until they are gone. The spell is the same, but you need to pay more attention to the parts of the mouse. We want to get them all now don't we?"

She moved to the cage, then began to call them up one by one to pick out a mouse. "There are plenty here, so please don't be too choosy. I have enough so if you wish to work with a second one, you may." Once everyone was seated again, she picked out her own mouse, and walked to the front of the class. Setting it down, she tapped her wand three times. "Evansesco!" The mouse disappeared mid stride as it tried to move away. "Ok. Get to work. I will be around to help if you need me."

Teddy was riding the high of Gryffindor's victory over Slytherin, a win that put the Quidditch championship tantalisingly within reach. He turned up to Transfiguration in a chirpy mood and listened to Professor Potter. This week they were vanishing mice and Teddy could do that. He approached the cage when called and took out a white mouse with a twitching pink nose, it was quite cute actually and Teddy felt bad vanishing it. His dad had told him though that he needed to put those feelings to one side if he wanted to master Transfiguration. He took a deep breath and aimed his wand, "Evansesco." The mouse vanished immediately and Teddy was happy with his performance. He thanked Professor Potter at the end of the lesson and left the classroom.
 
Aura walked into the transfiguration classroom ready to learn whatever they were throwing at her this lesson. The last couple of lessons had been good so she was keen to know more. She took her usual seat and then listened as the work was introduced, staring at the cage of mice with some apprehension. They were very tiny, very vulnerable creatures, she wasn’t prepared to potentially cause them any harm. As professor Potter explained the complexity of vanishing something in motion, she nodded, mentally bracing herself for the challenge. When her turn came, she approached the cage, selesting a small brown mouse that squirmed slightly in her hand. She returned to her desk, placing the mouse on the top so she could look at it properly. She raised her wand as the poor thing scurried around in wonder before tapping it three times and focusing on the mouse disappearing. “Evanesco!” The mouse shimmered and she almost thought it was going to stay in place before it disappeared and she sighed in relief. She would need another mouse to try again.​
 
Lucy was even more nervous this lesson. They were vanishing mice? Actual mammals? That was kind of scary. But she had to try to be brave if she wanted to pass the class and apparently even though messing this up was a real possibility their education in the matter was more important than the animal's wellbeing. That didn't quite sit well with Lucy, but she also didn't protest. She grabbed a mouse and tried to make sure if wasn't squirming too much but that turned out to be an impossible task. The mouse wanted to roam, wanted to get out of Lucy's grasp and probably explore or find cheese or whatever mice did. "Come on, if you don't calm down I might mess this up," Lucy told the mouse as she placed it on her desk, trying to remember to concentrate but as soon as she went to tap the mouse it had jumped off the surface. "Drat!" she exclaimed, getting down on the floor to try and chase the mouse. She got it at last, chastising it again, before bringing it back to her desk. She tried to time it better this time, but really, the mouse she'd gotten seemed to have better ideas other than being vanished. Which was fair enough, though aggravating. At long last, after a back-and-forth struggle, Lucy raised her wand and performed the spell, the mouse vanishing completely. Lucy let out a sigh of relief. That was a tricky one. She hoped it wasn't in the exam.
 
Callie walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She took out her wand and placed it down in front of her, she wasn’t too surprised that they were focusing on the spell again, it seemed it would be all they’d do all semester. She did not however feel that great about doing it on mice, she hadn’t liked it with snails, but even less so with rats. But she took one and then took her wand, and tried to move quickly, before just tapping her wand and saying ”Evanesco,” she managed to make it vanish and though she had time, didn’t opt to practice again, instead just revised the theory until the lesson was over.
 
Enoch walked into the transfiguration classroom and took his spot in the room. He spotted the mice and could figure out that was what they were working with. Enoch grabbed his wand and then listened to the few instructions but was glad when the professor just let them get to it. He took a rat, and pointed his wand at it. He tapped three times and then said. ”Evanesco,” but it took a couple of tries to get it, so he took another rat and practiced again, doing it as many time as he was able to.
