DADA Third Years, Lesson Four

On top of Professor Drage’s desk sat a large, transparent aquarium with a devil inside. Except, it wasn’t a devil, but a grindylow. She did her best to ignore the ugly, wiry, gray-green creature, which was doing its best to taunt her from inside the tank. The creature flipped itself upside down, balancing on the tank bottom with its spindly fingers.

In truth, this was Lydia’s first time meeting a grindylow. The professor herself had literally never visited the British Isles, and her classes at Ilvermorny had skipped over this creature, which made plenty of sense given geography. Lydia was slightly worried that her kiwi students wouldn’t give a shrivelfig about this creature, either. But it was part of the curriculum, not in her power to change for now, so she got comfortable with the mischief-making maggot.

“Grindylows are found in the British Isles,” Lydia began when her students settled in. “They live in freshwater lakes, and especially love bodies of stagnant water. Grindylows are considered dark creatures because when given the opportunity, they will eat humans.”

The professor paused, giving the students time to process this information. This creature, tiny in comparison to even the smallest of third years, would happily devour them given the proper conditions.

“However, humans are not a common part of the grindylow’s diet. They subsist on food in their natural habitat- fish, small water creatures, and so on. Interestingly, merpeople can tame the grindylow.”

Lydia jabbed a finger on the outside of the tank. The grindylow responded by jabbing back and gnashing its teeth. “See the grindlylow’s long fingers? They look brittle, but they are exceedingly strong. If a grindylow has a person in its grasp, they can be drowned easily. The trick to escaping a grindylow is to break its grip.”

Lydia stood back. “You may stay and observe the grindylow for as long as you like. Your assignment is to read about the grindylow- figure out ways you could break the grindylow’s grip, if you were the unfortunate person being drowned.”

Roleplay the lesson.

Hint hint, there will be questions about the grindylow on the exam.

As always, tag me if you want your student to interact with the professor.

Lucie was glad that they were halfway through the completion of the semester. She had been moving along with her classes well and was interested in most things that were being taught to her. She was confident that she would be able to get on well with her other classes and keep on top of her work, maybe more than the year before even. She packed her notes and textbooks into her backpack before leaving for her classes that week.

Lucie entered the Defence Against The Dark Arts classroom, slightly taken aback at the large aquatic creature that sat upon the professor's desk. She supposed the professor was looking after it for some reason and perhaps assisting the Care of Magical Creatures professor, and she was glad that it would be attending the class with them for a little entertainment. However, as the professor began the lesson, Lucie soon found out that it was what they were learning about, and the third year looked around the room to make sure she was in the right class. Why were they still learning about dangerous creatures in Defence Against The Dark Arts? She thought that was over after learning about werewolves, as there was some magic involved in their creation, but she was surprised that they were still going over creatures rather than spells or dark forces. Nonetheless, the Slytherin took some notes, trying her best to hold back from asking the professor a question that might make her seem ungrateful. Soon enough, the lesson came to an end and the third year quickly headed out once dismissed.

Louis was pleased that he was already halfway through the first semester of his third year. He couldn't help but be getting a little bit bored with some of the lesson's material. He rather enjoyed Muggle Studies however, finding it interesting to know how muggles lived, and Ancient Runes was also proving to be good too as he learnt about various different runes, despite not being too good at it. He just didn’t like many of the other subjects too much and hoped that soon enough they would start learning something interesting.

Louis was nervous walking into his Defence Against The Dark Arts classroom, especially after finding out last lesson that they were going to have to be dealing with boggarts soon. It was a very scary concept as the boy didn't have a clue what to expect. He sat down in his seat and prepared himself for the lesson, hoping that it would be a good one. His eyes widened however as he looked up and noticed the aquatic creature on the professor's desk. Surely the professor wasn't going to set it free? He felt his heart beating against his chest as the professor spoke about it, feeling as though the creature was staring deeply into his soul as he attempted to write notes on it. Luckily, the professor didn't touch the tank at all and the Hufflepuff boy quickly headed out of the classroom at the completion of the lesson.

Jordie was content, this year was going great. He felt like he was really growing into himself. He was running twice a day, he had so many great friends, and now he had an amazing boyfriend. He wondered sometimes if Onyx was this happy with Jamie. Was it possible to be happier? He was confused for a while, thinking that Jamie and Onyx were a different kind of happy. Were there different kinds of happiness? He would have to ask his uncle. He considered it as he walked down to class.

He was surprised to see a creepy creature in class. He settled in, watching curiously and shuddering as the thing met his gaze. He looked away then, done with the class. He kept a few notes, but he had no intentions of meeting a Grindylow ever again. He grabbed his things and bolted as soon as they were dismissed, relieved to be away from the thing.

Branson was focusing this week on writing his article for the monthly, he was looking forward to writing it. It would be good, easy, he was well versed in the book he was covering and had a lot of things he wanted to say. It wasn’t a very typical novel for him to cover, older and a little more mystery than the romance-y novels that he had covered in the past but he thought it was still very much worth it to cover. He was getting his first draft finished, working on it a little every day until he had something that was cohesive and right and flowed well. Eventually he had done enough for the moment and got ready for the day, making sure he was grabbing all the books, notes and homework that he would need for the day ahead of him. He was making sure that he wouldn’t have to take too many trips back and accounting for him going to the quidditch pitch after his classes to get in some practicing. Eventually Bran had everything and headed out of the dorm room and to class, he had a lot to do this week but he was sure he’d get it all done.

Branson walked excitedly into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took his usual spot in the room. He looked at the professor and behind her to the aquarium behind her. It was pretty neat. He took out his parchment and then took his quill and was ready as the professor got started on the lecture part of this lesson. He made sure to write it down, to get down what the professor was saying about the creature. It was a little unnerving to see the creature it was something...he felt a little bad that it was stuck in a small tank, but he also knew with magic that perhaps it wasn’t that stuck or wouldn’t be there for long. He made sure to get a detailed description of what the thing looked like as the professor had given them information about what it was. Eventually the lesson was wrapped up and Bran was able to pack up his things and head out of the room.

Francis was really happy with how his year was going. He was making new friends, though he had to keep at it, no matter how busy his semester was becoming the closer they were to exams. He knew he had to do well so that his parents would get off his back a little. Being the oldest child was mostly great, but sometimes it could be a lot of pressure. France sighed and shook his head to clear it, he was going to focus on the positives of what was currently going on in his life. He packed his belongings for the day and headed to class, doing his best to concentrate once he took a seat. He had enjoyed last week's lesson, but not as much as the practical ones from his other subjects. He zoned back in just in time to hear Professor Drage tell them it was going to be a lecture. Oh, perfect. He took out his writing equipment, a little disappointed that it was a lecture but so far that was just what it had been - at least they were still learning something that intrigued the third year. The Gryffindor made sure not to lose focus as he took notes, though he had to stifle a yawn by the time they neared the end of the lesson. He stayed to observe the Grindylow a bit, even though it didn't interest him much to look at the creature. When they were dismissed, France took note of the homework before he packed away his things and made his way out of the classroom.
