Plants were Rose her first love, baking was her second. Baking eased Rose her mind and calmed her down. Rosemarie walked down to the kitchen and spotted the ingredients she needed for a simple chocolate cake. It was close to midnight and Rosemarie couldn't sleep. She had been tossing and turning in her bed. Normally she would bake cookies or something to ease her worries down. Curfew was a thing, but she wasn't going to stay up all night because she couldn't sleep. Rosemarie brought a pot of Rosemary down with her, the plant that she was named after. The smell of the herb calmed her down even more. She sat the pot down on the counter and started to bake the chocolate cake. Weighing ingredients and putting them in a large bowl.

Sometimes, Flynn was incredibly jealous of the Slytherins for being so close to the kitchens. It was far easier for them to get up in the middle of the night and sneak out for a late-night snack. But just because Flynn was up on the seventh floor of the castle didn't mean he wasn't going to attempt to sneak out for a snack when he couldn't sleep. The first year wasn't exactly sure what time it really was, but it was late enough that most everyone else was asleep. And he was pretty lucky avoiding all the prefects and Professors who might be patrolling, silently slipping into the kitchens he had discovered (well, he made a seventh year tell him where it was), only to find he wasn't the only person awake at this time of night. "Are you cooking?" He asked curiously, padding closer to the girl with a frown, "Bit late to cook something, innit?"

Once she was sorted in Hufflepuff Rosemarie couldn’t think of any other house more suiting for her. The common room was decorated with a lot of different kinds of plants and it was pretty close to most of the classrooms. Rosemarie finished adding the dry ingredients to the bowl and started mixing them together. Suddenly he heard a sound, she truly hoped it wasn’t a prefect. It didn’t sound like a house elf or the Professors so when she turned around and spotted a relatively young boy, she knew she was safe for now. ‘’I am baking a chocolate cake’’ Rosemarie said while pointing to the chocolate chips. ‘’It is never too late to bake’’ Rosemarie grinned and added the wet ingredients to her bowl now. '''What are you doing here at this time then?'' The boy wasn't in her house and she hadn't paid enough attention to the sorting ceremony.

He supposed it was a good thing that it just seemed to be another first year in here instead of a Professors hiding out to catch rule-breaking students out of bed too late, such as themselves. But what he was just a little confused about was the fact this girl seemed to be baking a cake at midnight. "Right, chocolate cake," he repeated, still frowning somewhat as he idly played with one of the curls of his hair hanging in front of his eyes, "But how long's that going to take to even bake and make? It's going to be morning by the time its even ready?" Cooking always seemed to take far too much time, especially when you were as hungry as he usually was. But he stopped playing with his hair, shoving his hands into his pockets as he shrugged, "What do you think I'm doing in the kitchens? Finding something to eat, obviously."

The elves knew there was going to be a chocolate cake in the oven, one even agreed to take it out. So Rosemarie wouldn't have to wait the whole sixty minutes if she really wanted to go to sleep. Rose nodded when the boy said chocolate cake once more. She wasn't going to repeat herself and he could obviously she it was going to be chocolate cake. ''The mixing time is only half an hour or so, the baking time is an hour'' Rose paused ''Still plenty of time'' Rose wasn't going to bake till the sun came back up that would be folly. ''I assumed you were going to cook or bake something as well, I forgot you could just empty the cupboards for snacks'' Rose smiled. ''Do you think the prefects patrol the kitchens every night?'' She had seen zero so far but that said nothing.

Waiting that long for some cake and this time of night just sounded like a rather stupid idea. He was hungry now, so he was just planning on seeing what stuff the elves had left lying around the place that he could quickly grab and take before anyone noticed. "Plenty of time?" He questioned, raising his brow somewhat at this girl, "It's midnight, you won't be finished until about 2 in the morning." And weren't they supposed to be up early in time for breakfast and all of that? Flynn wouldn't be surprised if this girl managed to accidentally sleep in because she had been up for half the night baking a chocolate cake. "I can't cook," he did have to offer, moving further into the kitchen to find his own snack for the evening, "Or bake." He had only been allowed in the kitchen to watch, and after his parents died, banned from the orphanage's kitchens he had been in over the years. Then she brought up the prefects and Flynn turned his head towards her, wrinkling up his nose slightly, "I bloody well hope not." Because getting caught from then by a prefect sounded like a rather awful thing to happen.

Two in the morning did mean only five hours of sleep, but she could skip breakfast if needed to eat a nature valley bar or something she had brought with her. ‘’I couldn’t sleep anyway, so either I stay awake here or I toss and turn in my bed like a lunatic’’ So Rose opted for the best option and that was to go have a stretch and bake a cake. ‘’I can teach you baking at least, but we would have to do that at a more normal time’’ Rose grinned and smiled. It was late, she wasn’t denying that. The snooping Prefects and Professors were definitely a problem and Rose shrugged it off. ''Me too, hopefully they forget to check the kitchens tonight'' Rose mused herself.

He understood not being able to sleep, why did she think he was here in the first place? But baking at midnight still seemed like a completely stupid idea. At least with his plan, there wouldn't be any evidence leftover that he had been here. "Who said I wanted to learn how to bake?" Because he didn't last he checked. Just because he didn't know how to bake a cake didn't mean that he suddenly wanted to learn how to do it. Besides, it was a better idea to have Flynn had cooking kept ten feet apart at all times because no doubt he would find a way to cause trouble. "If they even check the kitchens in the first place," he offered his own suggestion with a shrug. "Besides, it's really late. Most people are probably asleep. I don't think the prefects patrol this late at night."

Rosemarie was starting to hope this boy would soon be out of her sight. He wasn't nice and he didn't respect her offer. ''Hey, It was just an offer'' Rose said softly turning her head towards her bowl. He wouldn't find any special snacks anyway. The house elves hardly pre-baked anything, so the only thing he could find were raw ingredients. He could snitch and apple or a pear and maybe some chocolate chips, but there weren't like bags of crisps around. ''I know they check the kitchens someone told me, but I think Prefects only patrol the evenings and Professors do bits of the night.'' Rose said matter-of-factly. She thought that was the way how they did it. Everyone needed sleep so there was a way. 'So found something edible?'' Rose said hoping he would go away soon.

"If I actually wanted to learn how to bake, I would probably ask one of the house elves," they sort of did it for a living, as well as all the other chores around the castle. He wouldn't go and ask lessons from some other first year girl he didn't even know and didn't know well enough to know if she could actually bake well or not. For all he knew, she could just enjoy baking, but the end result was actually a horrible mess. But as he was not here for baking lessons, he was currently more occupied with opening up all the cupboards to try and find something good to snack on. "They aren't going to be checking anywhere at midnight," he just pressed again with a shake of his head as he opened up another cupboard, "Everyone's going to be asleep." Not even the Professors were likely to be awake at this late hour, the only people who could possibly catch them were the house elves. "No," he groaned as he closed the cupboard he had been looking through.

Harlow, often a night prowler and an early riser, volunteered for midnight patrols. She could bring a book as she walked the corridors, buying away the time until another professor took over. Having checked the towers until the student lounge, she went to the great hall although nobody would be there. Close to the hall was thr kitchen, making the woman direct her steps there. If she was lucky ,she could ask for coffee from the elves. However, that was not the case when she overhead two voices, one seemed to be talking about patrola and professors. With a smirk, she stepped in casually. "Everyone is asleep but I'm not everyone, unfortunately." Her eyes regarded them before sweeping the area of what was there. "Care to explain yourselves why you are not in your beds?" She grabbed her wand and crossed her arms, awaiting their excuses.

Flynn froze in place the moment he heard a voice behind him, blinking as he slowly turned around to find a Professor standing there. What was she doing awake at this hour? He swallowed, shooting a glance towards the other first year for a moment. This was all her fault (obviously). If she wasn't there baking, then Flynn could have been and out by now without getting caught. But oh no, here was this Professor catching up out of bed at gone midnight. The Gryffindor pressed his lips together, almost mimicking the Professor as he folded his own arms, shifting his foot slightly. No good answer was going to be a good answer but he supposed he was bound to get into trouble eventually. "You know what? I don't actually have a good excuse," he gave up with trying to come up with anything, "I was just hungry and couldn't sleep." But he doubted very much that counted as a good excuse.

Rose was so busy with her cake that she didn’t heard the Professor at first. When she saw the boy reacting Rose turned around and spotted the Professor. She definitely was a Professor; the prefects were younger. Rose froze she didn’t know what to say really. At home she did this a lot when she had troubles with sleeping, but here you weren’t allowed to be out of bed after curfew. Rose thought about a reasonable explanation, but she didn’t have any so the truth would do. ‘’Professor, I couldn’t sleep tonight and normally at home I go and back something when that happens.’’ Rosemarie said almost silently, she was scared to death. ‘’It beats tossing and turning in my bed for hours and baking calms me down’ Rose grabbed her pot of Rosemary from the counter and held it as close to her body as possible. Rosemarie looked at the Professor and hoped she didn’t have lessons from her any time soon, that would be totally embarrassing.

With excuses not being able to sleep and being hungry the normal go-to for students, it was no surprise for Harlow when they said just that. She gave them her signature smirk, nodding along as she listened to them. The boy sounded arrogant, something the woman did not take a liking to. But the girl, she sounded sincere and did not hesitate answering her even when sprung with a question like that. It was not her decision to make though. She regarded the mess created and casually flicked her wand, cleaning everything in a snap. "Likely excuses for being in the kitchen." She said before waving two patronuses with messages to @Professor Cyndi Kingsley and @Professor Landon Carter. "Hop along, no dilly dally. I have sent word to your Head of Houses and I will be escorting you both to them for proper course of action to ensure no more detours." She gestured to the door, letting the students move before her. It seemed coffee was out of question now as she had caught some mischief.

The fact that this Professor said she was going to contact her head of house made her nervous. She clutched her plant pot closer and started fidgeting the leaves. The plant should calm her down like it always did, but it did nothing at the moment. She felt her nerves growing and growing and hoped the punishment was just helping in the Greenhouse for seven years. There was no way she wasn't going to comply to the Professor her orders and she walked towards the door. Hopefully her head of house was fast asleep and didn't have time to see her.

Flynn did have to roll his eyes with a mutter, "What else would we be doing in the kitchens?" Of course, that was a likely excuse, it was basically the only reason anyone would come down here this late at night. But the Gryffindor was less bothered about getting into trouble than the Hufflepuff seemed to be. This was not his first rodeo, you could say, and no doubt it wasn't going to be his last, either. Being told off by the Gryffindor head of house didn't even worry him that much. What was she going to do? Take house points off and give him detention? Terrifying. So, the first year simply rolled his eyes again, shooting one last glance at the Hufflepuff as he stomped out of the kitchen like he was told. But that didn't mean he was happy about it. It was not even like they were hurting anyone, so who cared if they were up at this hour anyway?
