Knox hadn't known about the magical world for too long, only having gotten his letter to Hogwarts a month before school started in September, because he'd barely met the threshold for age requirement since his birthday was in late September, technically after school started. He wondered if his eleventh birthday had been in January or something if he'd found out about magic back then and given him more time to learn all about the magical world. But instead he only had about two months worth of knowledge of this entire secret world and been thrown straight into it.
The school representative who had visited him at the orphanage had given him two Chocolate Frogs as a treat for him taking the news so well - who wouldn't be excited at the thought of being magical? But the real treat to Knox weren't the frog shaped chocolates, it was the collectible cards that came with them. Knox was a collector at heart, his own collection of seashells and Pokemon cards were proof of that, but these were so much better than Pokemon cards (it hurt his heart a little to admit that) because the portraits actually moved and left of their own free will! So the moment he saw that there were cards to collect from these candies, he became a man on a mission.
So far he had 6 total unique cards, 5 bronze and 1 silver, which weren't much, especially considering the 15 duplicate cards he had. Ugh. He'd gone a little overboard buying so many Chocolate Frogs he was actually sick of chocolate at the moment, but he did what he needed to do to collect the cards, especially knowing there were Gold cards he hadn't pulled once. Unfortunately he didn't realize how common the bronze ones were and had way too many of Celestina Warbeck, apparently a popular singer he was too young to know.
So, with his 6 unique cards tucked safely in a small envelope, Knox headed to the Great Hall for lunch and spread his 15 duplicate cards out on the Gryffindor table and asked out loud, "Does anyone want to trade Chocolate Frog cards?" hoping his voice rang out even past the Gryffindor table. He didn't know how popular or unpopular card collecting was amongst his peers but he didn't mind embarrassing himself a little if it rewarded him with something new.
