@Harper Alston vs @Liusaidh Fergusson

Angel stretched as he stepped up to the duelling platform, motioning to the two students to join him at opposite ends before surveying the crowd. Content everyone looked ready, he addressed the gathered students. "Welcome to your first round of duelling, let's have a nice clean duel today. The victor will be able to continue on to the rest of the tournament, and the loser will sadly be eliminated. When you're ready, please bow to your opponent and begin!" He said with a flourish, letting the students get started.
The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Harper's pulse was racing as she stepped onto the platform. She didn't want to admit, even to herself, just how badly she wanted to do well in the dueling tournament this year. And it wasn't just because she'd come so close to winning the entire thing last year. After everything that had happened over the past year — after being forced to quit her favorite sport, after facing setback after setback during her animagus training — she just wanted real, tangible proof that there was something she was still good at.

She gave Liusaidh a hesitant smile as she listened to Professor Castillo go over the rules. Harper had heard a lot of rumors about the girl — who hadn't? — but she didn't know what to expect when it came to a duel. She tried to remind herself that she'd been practicing all year for this. She had a strategy. When it was time to commence, Harper bowed and raised her wand — and turned it on herself. Uttering the incantation for the Disillusionment Charm, she waved her wand around herself, shivering slightly as a phantom liquid started to drip down her head and over her skin, rendering her practically invisible.

Liusaidh enjoyed the duelling thoroughly, she didn't ever do that well in it, she never managed to get that far, but she always enjoyed herself and with each passing year there were a whole host of new spells for her to try out. Liusaidh bowed to the girl she was facing, someone she knew vaguely but didn't know well, and thought it was odd as she made herself invisible. Liusaidh didn't mind just cast "Confringo,"

Cloaked by the charm, Harper crept to the side and out of Liusaidh's line of fire as quietly as possible. She had to press a fist to her mouth to stifle a shout when the girl sent back the Blasting Curse. The spell shot past her and into the wall of the chamber, causing a loud explosion. Thank god she was invisible. It was clear Liusaidh didn't believe in any kind of self-restraint when choosing spells. As quietly as she could, Harper cast, "Langlock" before once again starting to move to the side.

Liusaidh could admit the girl's trick of being invisible during the tournament was a bit genius, Liusaidh wouldn't know when the spell was coming for her until it was already on the way, as was proven by the spell that was sent that Liusaidh just barely managed to get a shield up. She gave a little laugh in amusement and then cast "Aguamenti," she couldn't specifically target well, so a spell with a larger hit area was probably for the best.

It was harder to dodge the blast of water, but Harper managed to avoid getting hit straight on. The attack was a curious one, but as she looked down at the water pooling across the platform, she understood why Liusaidh had chosen it. If she stepped in the water, the splashing would advertise her location instantly. For a second, Harper contemplated casting a drought charm, but she didn't want to lose her chance to attack. Gritting her teeth, she picked her way forward, trying to avoid the slowly expanding puddle. She was closer to Liusaidh now, which was a bit unnerving. There wouldn't be as much time to react to spells. But hopefully the element of surprise would still give her the upper hand. Harper raised her wand. "Reducto."

Aubrey stood quietly in the hall, trying to support her roommate and maybe friend. She smiled gently, watching the duel unfold. "You're doing great, Harper!" She called out, hoping it sounded encouraging.

Liusaidh was barely able to dodge out of the way of the spell. She knew that she was probably very outmatched, but this was also the most fun in a duel she'd had in a while. People fought to win, and she was sure Harper was, but Liusaidh wanted the thrill of it. So instead of trying to end the spell the girl had, instead cast "Incendio,"

Harper tensed her muscles, ready to move at a second's notice. Her concentration was momentarily broken when she heard someone shout her name, and she had to lunge out of the way to avoid Liusaidh's attack. The flames streaked by so closely that Harper could feel their heat, and she shivered. But she seemed to be fine.

Or so she thought. It was the smell of burning fabric that alerted Harper. Glancing around, she spotted a flame hovering mid-air next to the spot where her arm should be. With a yelp, she realised that Liusaidh's spell must have caught the edge of her sleeve. Harper waved her arm frantically, but that just made the flames grow. The heat was starting to grow unbearable when she finally thought to cast a flame-freezing charm.

For a moment, Harper could only stand in shock, staring at the growing flames. It was an eerie sight, the floating fire slowly consuming her invisible robes. It also gave her an idea. There was a good chance her robes would reappear once she cast them off, but if she moved quickly, she might still be able to use them to trick Liusaidh. In one swift motion, Harper shrugged off her burning robes and tossed them to the side. At the same time, she took a couple quick steps in the opposite direction before shooting a "Silencio" at the Slytherin.

((I think the flame-freezing charm counts as a defensive spell, but if it doesn't, I can change this))

Liusaidh was pretty glad when her spell made contact, it was funny to watch as fire floated in mid air. She watched the cloak come off and be dropped on the ground. She smirked lightly, and was only just able to block her spell, before sending back a Stinging Hex.

Harper was already on the move when Liusaidh launched her attack, and she was able to avoid the hex fairly easily. Though she was a little disappointed the trick hadn't worked, she was glad to get rid of the robes. It was a lot easier to move around without a large swath of fabric billowing around her. Still, between the large puddle of water behind her and the burning remnants of her robes to the side, there wasn't a lot of space to move about on the platform, and Liusaidh remained a little too close for comfort. Harper decided to throw a "Confringo" at the Slytherin's feet in an effort to drive the girl back a bit, though she was careful to aim for the platform.

Liusaidh wasn't able to get out the way of Harper's spell, and was blown backwards by the force of the spell. She held on tight to her wand, and got to her feet. She was a little unsteady and then took a deep breath, she couldn't spot where Harper now was, she'd been a little disorientated. She sent back, "Obscuro," wildly aiming.

The intensity of the blasting curse surprised Harper, and for a moment, she was worried that she'd actually hit Liusaidh with it. But then the girl managed to stand up. Still, Harper couldn't help feeling a little unsettled. If a blasting curse aimed at the ground could cause that much damage, then what would happen if someone got hit directly? Liusaidh sent back a charm, and Harper ducked out of instinct though the spell didn't come anywhere close to her. She quickly retaliated with a quiet "Stupefy."

Liusaidh was having a little trouble focusing, she had probably hit her head when she'd gone down, but this so much fun she just wanted to keep at it. Duels could be so boring and then they could be so good. It wasn't something she excelled at, but always gave it a shot anyway. Liusaidh tried to block the spell coming towards her, but just wasn't quick enough and she was out before she knew it.

Angel knew duels for older students could be a little more complicated than the lower years but he still wasn't quite prepared for the slew of different spells from today's match. It felt like the dust had settled after the confrigo charm had gone off before Liusaidh took a stunning spell and hit the deck pretty hard. Angel winced, stepping onto the platform with his arms raised, not totally certain where Harper was. "Harper Alston is the winner! Where ever she is..." He said, pulling out his wand to revive Liusaidh and start clearing up the water and debris from the platform.
