Last year’s Yule Ball had marked a turning point in Stella’s life. Now, she could hardly believe that it was a whole year since she’d started dating Zoe. It felt so natural for them to be together, and having Zoe close to her had grown into a vital part of her life. Now, walking into the Great Hall hand in hand with her, Stella grinned as she looked around. It was just as beautiful as last year, and she was sure it would feel just as magical. Maybe even more so, now that the two of them were secure in their relationship rather than fumbling awkwardly with their first kiss. The artificial snow from the ceiling was the only thing that dampened Stella’s mood, unseasonable and, more importantly, obscuring the stars. But she had no intention of letting it annoy her when there was so much here that was perfectly wonderful. Besides, she and Zoe in their white dresses shone like the moon, and nothing could take that away. With her free hand, Stella gestured to the dance floor, already populated with swirling couples. “Shall we dance?”

Zoe couldn't help but have warm fuzzy feelings when it came to the Yule Ball. Her first kiss with Stella at last year's ball had been a pleasant surprise, and she was looking forward to the dance as their first anniversary. Stella's fingers laced with her own felt nothing but natural as Zoe walked into the Great Hall with her, looking around happily. The decorations always blew Zoe away, the thought of snow at christmas a bizarre and kind of funny one to her. She knew it was normal to some people, but Zoe found it a bit strange. She wasn't distracted by the decor for long though, nodding quickly in response to Stella's question. "Yeah!" Zoe said happily, pulling her girlfriend towards the dancefloor. "Let's go!"

Stella happily let her girlfriend pull her along, basking in the excitement and the ambiance of the night. She didn't usually like crowds, but this throng of moving bodies and colourful dresses was exhilarating. Zoe picked a spot on the dancefloor, and Stella spun her around, delighting in the way her hair flung out and her eyes sparkled. Zoe was always so enthusiastic about things; it was infectious, and wonderful to see. "Happy anniversary," she said, and pulled her girlfriend closer for a kiss - not an astonishing, world-changing kiss like the last time they'd kissed on a night like this, but something that felt completely natural and comfortable.

Zoe laughed in delight as Stella spun her around, her neat bob floating around her face as she twirled to the music. She wanted to feel this happy and free and warm forever, comfortable and joyous as she fell into an easy dance with Stella. When Stella leaned in to kiss her Zoe returned the gesture, leaning close as she kissed Stella back softly. Everything felt right when they were together like this. "Happy anniversary." Zoe grinned, nestling her nose gently alongside Stella's as they swayed slowly to the music.

Stella settled easily into the rhythm of Zoe's swaying, and the soft, luminous warmth that seemed to surround them. Last year she'd found it boring how this intimate swaying was all the other couples were doing, but now she could see the appeal of it, close and relaxed in her love's arms. Like it was just the two of them and the music and the movement in all the world. So much had changed since this time last year, and all of it was thanks to Zoe.
