"Good afternoon, class!" Professor Jonathan shouted as the students walked into the classroom. "What a wonderful day it is today!" He stopped and smiled, looking around at the class as they took their seats. "I have decided to give you all a little treat today. Since you have been doing so well in my class, I have decided to give you a day off of boring lectures and classrooms. We are going on a field trip!" He said so enthusiastically that some of the students snickered. Jonathan walked around to the back of her desk and pulled out a very small ancient relic shaped like a mummy. It only stood about a foot high, but some of the students in the front row cowered away. "Don't worry, this is completely harmless. I would like for someone to tell me how we are allowed to travel from this school since we cannot apparate. Anyone....." He looked around the room and saw someone towards the back of the room with their hand up. "Yes?" The student stated in a matter of fact tone, "Portkeys. Just by touching one, you will be taken to another location where another portkey is located." Jonathan nodded his head, smiling at the student. "Excellent! You are absolutely right!" He smiled at all the students, evidently excited for the lesson to come. "I know some of you don't find this," he gestured to the miniature mummy, "very appealing, but it's the only one I have." He paused for a moment, trying to remember what she was going to say next, then said, "Oh, yes! I almost forgot to tell you where we are going! How many of you have heard of the Smithsonian Museum?" He waited as almost every hand in the room went up. "Well, for those of you who don't know, the Smithsonian Museum is one of the largest museums in the world. It is located in Washington D.C. and holds some of the world’s greatest historical displays." "Now, I bet you are all wondering why I'm taking you to a muggle museum, which has nothing to do with magic. Well, let me explain. History is everywhere we look; both magical and muggle. In order for you to completely understand history, you must look at it from every vantage point." Jonathan had studied both magical and muggle history - it was amazing to see how the two often fitted together Jonathan walked to the front of the room, and pointed at the portkey. "Once everyone is ready, I would like all of you to walk to the front of the room and place your hands on the mummy. But before you do, I would like all of you to leave your robes behind; of course leaving on the uniforms underneath. I would also like for all of you to leave behind your wands, you will have no use for them there. We are going to pretend that we are a group from a private muggle school. There should be no questions asked." He paused again, going over a mental checklist, and then decided she had said everything she wanted to. "Right, now everyone please step to the front of the room and place your hands on the mummy." Jonathan waited as they walked forward. Once all the students had placed their hands on the mummy, they were sucked inward; as if through their belly-buttons; and suddenly reappeared right behind the great Smithsonian Museum. "All right students. I have here passes for all of you to view all the exhibits." he paused as he handed them to all the students. "I am going to give you four hours, and I would like you to meet back here once the time is up. There are several buildings here, so please don't get lost. If you should happen to get turned around, find someone else from the group and make sure you know where you need to go. I think that's about it, now all of you have a good time and don't forget where to meet." Jonathan walked with the students until they reached the front of the buildings, and then they all went their separate ways. Homework Assignment: Homework will be simple today. I would like you to RP going to the Smithsonian Museum. There is no limit to the RP, but I'd like more than a couple of sentences. For extra credit write a VERY brief summary of one of the exhibits there. I would like no less than 100 words; which isn't really that much once you think about it. I would also like links to your resources. I have also included a couple of good websites that I found for the Smithsonian. Feel free to use those. Have fun! http://www.si.edu/ http://americanhistory.si.edu/index.cfm RP: 10 Essay: EC |

A rumour twitched and tripped hastily through the morning air as it ran trails around the Ravenclaw common room amongst the first year students; today they would be attending a very different sort of History of Magic lesson, one that would be a little more hands-on than was usual. Through mingled communications, Lorin awoke to the rather puzzling news that Professor Spenser's class would be going somewhere different, and that it was likely to be somewhere very special like an ancient cave or, as one student so boldly claimed, an old world tavern- "Full of all sorts, it'd be!" The student had squealed with excitement, practically dancing on the legs of those not yet fully awake or showing interest, "Muggles and goblins, giants, vampires.." The boy went on dreamily but Lorin shook his head. He was certain no such place existed, and even if it did, he was sure that first years learning about the history of magic would not be attending an establishment like that. Arriving at the classroom, the rumours grew partially confirmed; they would indeed be taking a trip to somewhere outside of the Hogwarts grounds, but, according to the Professor, it was to be one of the greatest and most important muggle museums in the world. Sadly, Lorin had never heard of it, and his skin flushed pink as he watched many other hands raising high up into the air with recognition of the place. He also found himself to recoil a little at the site of the tiny mummy relic. Still, Lorin was glad to be able to redeem himself, somewhat, when it came to charms and the protection of the school boundaries. Through curiosity he had taken it upon himself to read and investigate into the inner workings of the school and learn as to why students did not simply apparate to the local sweet shop every five minutes. "Portkeys." Lorin stated, matter of factly, "Just by touching one, you will be taken to another location where another portkey is located." Lorin was most grateful that they would be allowed to keep wearing their school uniforms, even without the addition of their robes, though he still felt pretty naked without his trusted wand by his side. The Ravenclaw placed the pink-tinged wand lovingly inside if his removed robes, rolling it up in a protective manner, before backing off and walking to the front of the classroom to rejoin the other students as they each crowded in to place a hand upon the miniature mummy. Lorin could only hope this mode of travel would not be as uncomfortable as he had read. But it was. The entire class were sucked inward and spiralled with unpleasant rate. Lorin had a horrible feeling in his stomach and began to feel sick. But the journey was short-lived, and after the brief unpleasant nature of their travel, the students arrived at the grand sight of the Smithsonian Museum. Professor Spenser handed them each a pass exhibit, explained that they would have only four hours to look around, and that they were to return to that same meeting place when their time was up. Lorin simply could not wait. While nerves struck him, excitement flowed; now, what was he going to look at first?
