Professor Spenser entered the classroom, running slightly late. He saw that most of the students were there already; and as he sat at the desk, quickly looking over his notes, the rest entered. He smiled and stood up, moving in front of her desk to her usual spot before the class. "Welcome back! I read over all of your assignments and am happy to get to know all of you. I am sure we will get along just fine, and I thank you all for taking them time to fill them out. Now, I would like for all of you to take out your quills and some parchment. I am going to give you a very brief lecture and I would like you to take notes."

Jonathan walked between the desks as she continued. "If we go way back, to the beginning of when witches and wizards were first mentioned in history, you will always wind up in the Medieval times. Does anyone know who the most famous wizard of that time is?" He paused and looked around, his eyes setting on a young student with their hand up. "Go ahead," he said, nodding encouragingly. The student replied, "It's Merlin, right?" Jonathan smiled and nodded. "You are absolutely right. Well done." Taking a note of the student who answered, Jonathan continued to pace and continued his lecture.
"Yes, Merlin was the wizard who worked for King Arthur and his father before him. Did you know, however, that Merlin also had a hand in raising the future King? King Arthur was originally put up for adoption when he was just a baby and Merlin found him a foster father and there young Arthur stayed. He also had a half-sister who was named Morgan La Fey. At a young age he unsheathed the sword in the classic sword and the stone tale. I wonder, though, as you all have heard this story I'm sure, if you know that this is a true story. Back in that time that was considered to be a test of strength and power. I won't tell you too much more, but I would like to let you all know that this is all very important and I would make sure to keep all the facts for the exam at the end of the semester." he smiled again at the students, and continued making sure to mind the time. "Right, well, I don't want to cut this lesson as close as I did the last lesson, so I am going to end there. For homework tonight, I would like for all of you write an essay on either King Arthur, Merlin, or the Medieval times. This will be due before next week. "A History of Magic" is an excellent source. You can find this book in the Library."
Homework Assignment:

January progressed with its usual warmth. Birds took to the skies on the even the most dizzyingly hot days, while many other creatures took to the shade of the trees. Hogwarts was no different in the summertime to anywhere else in New Zealand. Well, except for the creatures that you might see about the school grounds. It was not everyday you could pass a vast lake playing home to all manner of underwater creatures such as mermaids and a giant squid.

Lorin had spent the morning sat beside the Great Lake, his toes dipping into the cool pooling swirls of the water, while he listened, eyes closed tight, to the sounds of the morning chorus. It was only thanks to a couple of passing students heading down to their first lessons of the day that Lorin thought to check the time upon the face of his pocket watch. He did not much approve what he saw; according to the ticking clockwork device, he was going to be late for his own class.
Leaping to his feet, Lorin plucked on his socks and shoes, swinging his school bag over his shoulder and hurrying back up towards the castle to make attendance of his first class for the day.

Panting and puffing, Lorin raced, dived, and sprinted head-long every corridor, only slowing to avoid detection from the prefects and professors that he passed. After what seemed an eternity, Lorin set foot across the boundary line of the History of magic classroom, and seated himself in the same place as he had done before. Now he pulled out his parchment, ink, quill, and History of Magic textbook, readying himself for the lesson which, thankfully, he seemed not to have turned up noticeably late for.

In between writing down his notes, Lorin somehow found the time to shoot his pole-like arm directly up into the air. The Professor nodded him on, and Lorin gave his answer, which he hoped to be correct.
"It's Merlin, right?"
Pleased to receive further encouragement from the History of Magic professor, Lorin returned, with more confidence, to his note-taking adventures.
Notes

The earliest mentions of witches and wizards in history leads back to the medieval era.
The most famous wizard during the medieval era is Merlin.
Merlin worked for King Arthur and, previously, his father.
Merlin helped in raising the young King Arthur.
Arthur was originally put up for adoption as a baby.
It was Merlin who found Arthur a foster father.
Arthur had a half-sister named Morgan La Fey.
While still very young, Arthur pulled the sword from the stone in tale of the sword and the stone.
This act was thought of as a test of strength and power to prove the future king worthy of his throne.
Hand aching a little from the mounds of writing he had undertaken, Lorin dipped his quill into the inky black pool before adding a note at the bottom of his parchment to remind him of the homework, it's requirements, and, most importantly, the deadline. There was no way he wanted to fail his History of Magic class; only the second lesson had passed, and yet Lorin was already enamoured with the subject.
Packing up his things, the young lad was quick to exit the classroom and make his way down towards the library to get started on the homework.

History of Magic Lesson Two
Magic Within The Medieval Age
During the Medieval times, magic was frowned upon and feared by most muggles. It was not uncommon for the persecution of an innocent but missfortunate muggle mistaken for a practitioner in the dark arts, or any form of magic. In fact, the only times when witches and wizards were welcomed knowingly and temporarily into the lands of the muggles, was when a king requested their services, usually in aiding in the slaying or management of a dragon.

In Wales of the United Kingdom, Arthurian legend of dragon slayers, dark magic, wizards, and water creatures still prove a popular study of muggles. Whether or not their facts are always accurate and correct as to the function of magic is quite irrelevant, for this simple interest and desire of many for belief in the life and times of Merlin and King Arthur demonstrates the change in attitude towards magic since the Medieval times.

However, even in today's world there are many muggles from all over the globe who still uphold this olden attitude, and witch hunts still take place to this day. It would seem that there is more anger and brimstone built up within modern muggle culture's attitude towards magic, than that of the Medieval age in which it was something to be feared:
In the era of the olden times, muggles were a lot more religiously focussed and easily swayed by their lack of 'science' and scientific understanding. Their religion forbade the use of witchcraft, claiming that it was down to spawn of the Devil or demonic creatures. Many religious leaders encouraged this fearful attitude to better manipulate their congregation and those around them. Any person suspected of being a practitioner of witchcraft was to be caught, tortured for confession, and put to death.
Thankfully, these gruesome slaughters of the innocent and guilty are much rarer now, though witchcraft is still considered sinful, but many religions now follow the path of forgiveness instead of violence.
Merry Christmas!
I really hope this essay makes sense; I haven't been sleeping very well of late.

[justify]     Belladonna was slowly becoming adjusted to attending lessons every day once again. Problem was, Belladonna was the type of person who really enjoyed sleeping. The blonde often went to bed earlier than most so she could get in an hour or two more of sleep than she really needed before she had to get up. Weirdly enough, she wasn't lay. Belladonna liked to run around and get exercise whenever possible, but she was just the type of person who valued sleep just as much. Yawning loudly, Belladonna entered the History of Magic classroom and attempted her best to to rub the sleep out of her eye. Last night she actually attempted to study for a little bit, but only managed to last half an hour before she fell asleep in the library. When the librarian finally woke her up, she was fully rested. This caused her to stay up half the night, unable to fall asleep. Students weren't allowed out of bed at night either so it wasn't like she could do anything productive either. "Maybe I can get a nap in before Quidditch." Sergios wouldn't be happy to see her falling asleep during practice. The sound of the Professor's voice was enough to wake Belladonna up once more. She needed to pay attention to the lesson before she got yelled at!

Belladonna blinked and shook her head when the Professor asked the class if anyone knew who the most famous wizard of that time was. It started with an 'M', but that was about it when it came to what Belladonna knew. When someone mentioned Merlin, Belladonna slammed her head down onto the desk. Damn, she knew it was him! Why didn't the name come to her mind? Must have been the lack of sleep! Belladonna refocused herself onto the lesson and pulled out some items to take notes with. Belladonna found it to be pretty cool that Merlin also had a hand in raising the future King? Belladonna would love to help raise a king someday! Too bad she was pretty sure that they didn't exist anymore! At the end of the lesson they were given an essay assignment and then dismissed. As much as she didn't want to say it, Professor Spenser definitely wouldn't be getting an essay from her. Belladonna laughed at her lack of study skills and left the classroom alongside her classmates.
