"Come in and take your seats quickly," Professor Barnard greeted the children as she opened the door for them, moving herself slightly aside so the students could pass through. "We have much to cover in a very short amount of time because we will not be staying in the classroom today," She continued and grinned weakly as she saw a few eyes light up a bit at the prospect of a 'field trip'. "Today we will be learning a spell that, like many charms, can be used in your every day life. Locking and unlocking doors is one of the most basic things you can do to secure your home. I'm sure many of you have seen your parents do this. There are other more advanced methods, of course. However, that is a discussion best left for another time." Connor declared as a few nods were given, most likely all nodding possessing at least one wizarding parent. "Using this charm is much more secure than using a mechanical lock like muggles use," Professor Barnard began again before pausing for a moment to flick her wand at the box behind her desk. In it were several muggle-style locks, one of which floated slowly towards her in the air, hovering at a stop a few feet from her face, a spectacle for all of her students to look at. "As I'm sure those of you with a tie to the muggle world know, to lock one of these, you simply turn a key. That makes it so you can't open it easily," She continued and demonstrated the ease of turning the handle before it was locked, and the little movement it made after it was locked. "Unfortunately for muggles, this is also rather easy to unlock, even without the key. Using the locking charm prevents those you want to keep out, Out. At least, the common muggle thief." said Connor explaining. She smiled, giggling a bit to herself at this bit of information. Of course, she hadn't wanted to make them feel less secure in the homes of those he lived with muggles, but it was the cold truth. Setting the lock down, Connor pulled her wand out and headed towards the door. "You'll learn more about muggle things like this lock in Muggle Studies if you choose to take it," She announced and glanced at a second year that was sitting close to her. "Would you please join me?” She said as the student got up nervously from their desk and stepped up to the door with her. "If you would, please open the door," She instructed. The second year nervously opened the door, wondering what was going to come next. "Go ahead and close it. Thank you. Don't go away yet," She said and then turned his attention to the class once more. "This door is obviously not locked. However, if you point your wand at it and say, 'Colloportus' the door is now locked," Professor Barnard stated as she demonstrated the locking spell and motioned for the second year to try to open the door again. Not surprisingly, it wouldn't budge. "Make sure you get the pronunciation correct. As always, pronunciation is key," She said and uttered the incantation again, asking them to repeat her. After a few tries of that, she nodded her head and turned back to the door. "What is locked must be unlocked. For this we have 'Alohomora'. Please, if you would," She said prompting the second year to try the door again, which opened with ease. "You may retake your seat." said Connor. Instructing the students once again to repeat after her, Connor repeated the incantation a few times until she was sure the students heard her properly. "Very good. Please pick up one of the doorknobs that are on my desk and follow me. You will need them for your homework tonight. Some are locked, others are not. Your task is to unlock or lock them as needed." Instructed Connor with a smile. Shutting the door after the last student passed through it, Connor quickly lead them down a couple corridors towards a long one that was filled with many doors. "Pair off and choose a door. First check to see if the door is locked or unlocked. Don't worry, you won't be disturbing anyone, these classrooms are not used currently. Once you know if the door is locked or not, use the spells you learned today to counter the current spell." said Connor with a smile. Glancing around and doing a mental head count, she continued, "After that, place the original spell once more. I will be walking around if you need help. Once you have done both spells successfully, call me over to check your work. You will need to show me your progress before you leave for the day." said Connor with a smile. Homework: RP the lesson with a fellow student and write an essay on the importance of these charms. 100 word minimum. |
