[justify]Connor sat at the desk in the front of the room preparing herself for the first real class of teaching the first years. She had already placed a large feather on the students desks. The feathers were not the classic white feathers but red as they were easier for Connor to spot along the desks. She hoped the students wouldn't be upset as she knew the color was often referred to the Gryffindor house. She had no preference of the houses as she had never gone to Hogwarts. Though she thought she would have fit in well within the Slytherin house, being the person she was. Flicking her wand so the door would open she sat back in her chair and waited for the students to pile in and take their seats. At the start of the lesson signaled by the bell she flicked her wand again and the door closed. Taking roll call to see who attended Connor was pleased to see the eager faces of the students. "Good Day, first years," she addressed them formally, "welcome to another Charms lesson. Today we will be studying a most useful spell that goes by the incantation of 'Wingardium Leviosa. Who can tell me what this spell is used for?"

Connor hoped that all the students would raise their hand, as it had been assigned to them to study the charm before coming to this class. It was good to see that they had been doing their research, or at least were making an effort within the class. She moved her index finger about before finally pointing at a student who seemed eager to answer, and stood out the most to her. "Yes," she said, "you."

"It's a levitating spell. It makes things float." The student answered. Connor smiled at the student and nodded her head. She stood up from her chair and moved around to stand in front of the desk and the class. Her black robes billowed out as she did so. "Yes. Completely right. Five house points. This spell can come in very handy in everyday life. Say you had a heavy object to move like a sofa and you had no-one around to help you- this spell would be your best bet. Much easier to clean up any messes under heavy objects you see," Connor said, although thinking on it the students seemed a bit young to her to really have any cleaning experience at all. They most likely did not live alone like she did.

"Okay," she said confidently or not so much, "on you desk you will note a large red feather. I hope you all have your wands because you'll need them in a few minutes." She waited for the students to take out their wands. Connor raised her own wand, facing her desk where a feather of similar color and size laid. "Observe." She aimed her wand towards the feather, swishing it and flicking it as he spoke. "Wingardium Leviosa!" The feather rose up into the air, floating wherever Connor pointed her wand. She moved the feather back to the desk, casting off the spell with a small, "Finite," and returning his eyes to the class. "That wand movement is the most important one you will ever learn. It is used for most spells. So let us practice. Swish and flick." Connor gently swished and flicked her wand repetitively, urging the class to follow suit and say it out loud. "Swish and flick."

Once certain they had grasped this movement, Connor signaled for them to lower their wands. "Good effort," she said, she wasn't the most positive person on the planet of course, "now let's practice the spell pronunciation: "Wing-GAR-dee-um lev-ee-OH-sa. Make sure the 'GAR' is nice and long. Really emphasize that 'OH'." She listened to them practice for a good few moments before beckoning silence. "Well done, well done. Now, let's try putting the two together. Keep trying until you get it. You may leave when you have mastered it. I'm here if you need help. And I'll be around the help correct your movements and pronunciation."

Roleplay the lesson and perform the levitation charm. If your character needs help then you may roleplay (within rules and reason) my character assisting yours.
One student may answer the question, but if you're first to reply, you don't have to have your character answer. (text in red is what they have said).

Feeling much better after a nap, Andrea accompanied her friend Paige to the Charms classroom where Professor Barnard was already waiting for them. They took their usual seats and Andrea swiveled so they could chat for a while before class began, as was their usual habit. When the professor called role, Andrea answered primly and quieted when she began the lesson eager to start working actual magic. She knew the charm they were learning today already, having read books on it and having heard Paige talk up a storm about it. She lifted her hand in the air and, when called on, answered promptly, "It's a levitating spell. It makes things float."

At the same time, she was jotting down notes; it was crucial that she remembered all of this in the coming years and her notes were designed to last:

Notes

Wingardium Leviosa

- Levitation charm
- very handy

  • moving heavy objects

- incantation: wingardium leviosa (wing-GAR-dee-um lev-ee-OH-sa)
- wand movement: swish and flick

Putting her notes away, she eagerly drew her wand when the professor indicated the feather sitting on each of their desks. It was her favorite color; a pretty blood red. She lifted her wand when Professor Barnard commanded them to practice the wand movement, wanting to get it down so she could cast the spell successfully. Swishing and flicking her wand primly, Andrea mastered the movement in a few short strokes her eyes shooting between her own movement and the professor's and a pleased smile crossing her features when she finally got it.

On to the incantation; she already knew this well. So when asked to practice saying it, she was positive she got it right on the first try though she continued to repeat it...just to be certain. Finally it was time to put it all together and levitate the red feather; she was nearly bouncing with excitement. She could tell Paige was eager to do it as well though, knowing her friend, she'd probably already done this spell a number of times. Andrea had performed it before but it had been accidental magic and she didn't recall using such a structure...but that was what controlling your magic was all about.

Pointing at the feather with her wand, she silently waved and mouthed the incantation for a minute before attempting it. "Wingardium Leviosa." She said clearly, her lips curling around the words imperiously as she swished and then flicked her wand in the direction of the feather. It shuddered and, after a moment's hesitation, rose up into the air causing a stunned Andrea to stare at it in wonder; had she really gotten it on the first try? Bringing the feather to settle back down on the desk, the young Slytherin tried a few more times before smiling, believing she was close to mastering the spell...at least on the feather. Too soon, class was over though and she had to leave. Smiling slightly at the professor, Andrea followed Paige out of the room.

Paige was still in her dormitory her wand was carefully placed on her bed along with other materials she might need in this lesson. Paige loves Charms and all the spells that came with it. Paige knew that this new Professor was still learning everything about teaching and Paige did not judge her. Paige took all of the materials including her wand an carefully stacked it all in her brown leathered bag, the filled bag was now hanging on her shoulder. Paige and her new found friend Andrea were walking to the Charms Classroom, it was an easy walk from the Dungeons to the Third Floor Corridor. Paige sat down on in the classroom next to Andrea. Paige listened and made notes of everything Paige knew the answer, but Andrea got her hand first in the air and Paige decided that she could answer the question first.

Paige had her wand already in her hand and wanted to levitate the feather, she hated the colour of it and was glad she would levitate it away. "Swish and flick." Paige muttered while making the wand motion she was supposed to do. Paige looked at the red feather in front of her and made the proper hand movement, she said the spell good and clear. ''Wingardium Leviosa'' The feather rose up in the air and Paige followed it with her hand, Paige had done this spell a couple of times before and she knew that she could do it. Paige got the feather back to her table and she tried a couple of more times every time the feather rose up in the air. When the Professor said that the lesson was finished she left the classroom with her filled bag. Paige and Andrea both left the Charms classroom.
