"So far we have covered every aspect of Animate to Animate Transfiguration that I feel you may need in your upcoming years here at Hogwarts, so I will cover something new today in preparation of your next year," Professor Davershire explained to her students as she began class, before taking a huge breath, knowing they had a long lecture ahead of them "Transfiguration is best known as the branch of magic that allows you to transform one object into another object. However, even this branch of magic has its limitations. Certain objects are un-charmable, un-transfigurable, and displaced from the realm of any sorts of magic that humans can muster. What occurs when a witch or wizard attempts magic on said objects is called 'Clashing Magic'. Have you ever heard of a phoenix animagus? What about a manticore patronus? Or a wizard transfiguring a book into a dragon? The fact remains that such transfiguration is impossible to do. Creatures like phoenixes, manticores, and dragons are magical creatures; attempting to transfigure them into another object or any object into one of them will always fail." "But I've heard you can use a stunning spell or a conjunctivitis curse against a dragon. How does using charms or transfiguration differ?" A student asked. "Good question. There are but two uses for magic: offense and everything else. Offensive spells will work against any object or creature if it is cast properly. Stunning spells, curses, hexes, and jinxes are meant to create a sort of barrier between an attacker and the caster of the spell. Even hideously disgusting spells like the Bat Bogey Hex create a distraction, and annoy the victim rather than do any real harm." She walked around the room to make sure everyone was writing notes. "The difficulty in casting a spell on, rather than against, a magical creature lies in the nature of the creature itself. Each magical creature has its own mechanism of magic that clashes with our own. If we use phoenixes as an example, they can burst into flames and be reborn, use their tears to heal, and their song to soothe the soul." "When a witch or wizard attempts to cast a transfiguration or charm on a magical creature, the clash occurs. Our human magic collides with the magic of the creature and become null and void. The spell will fail. A similar problem arises when a witch or wizard attempts to transfigure a magical creature into something else, either magical or not. In the case of attempting to transfigure a phoenix into, say, a non-magical rooster, this cannot be done since the phoenix's magic cannot be taken out of the creature. As the infamous wizard Imitor said, "Magic can be neither created nor destroyed, altered, changed, modified, mutated or otherwise transformed." "The phoenix itself is magical, its every thought and every feather is magical, therefore no other magic can possibly penetrate it." Professor Davershire said, approaching her desk. "Despite the fact that most magic folk have resigned to considering magical creature transfiguration impossible, the Ministry continues to do mild research on the subject." She looked at the time. Class was over. "Please copy down your homework, sorry for the long lecture! See you next week! She waved her wand at the blackboard, making the homework appear. Homework: RP the lesson. For extra credit, you can do either: 1) Essay: Transfiguration on a magical creature is impossible, but if you could do it, what sorts of things might you need to visualize and concentrate on to make it work? 2) Draw a picture of any magical creature of your choice. |

It was the fourth week of lessons and Sergei Zhefarovich was more than ready to get the rest of the semester done and over with. There were just a few more weeks left of school, and Sergei was relishing in it. The third year entered the classroom and he found his seat in the back of the classroom like he always had. The Slytherin looked up and saw the professor before he felt like he was going to be wasting his time like he always was in classes. Though he was earning his house some points, so he should not be complaining. Slytherin was a little behind Hufflepuff which meant it was just pathetic. They were doing so well! What in the hell happened? The other third years entered the classroom and they were ready to begin. The lesson started with how they had covered every aspect of Animate to Animate Transfiguration, and he nodded curtly anyway. He did not want to have to see that though. He hated thinking of Transfiguration and what they could use it for. Everything he wanted to use it for, it was illegal. Apparently they were going over a long lecture anyhow. Certain things were unable to be charmed or transfigured. A student asked a question, and he rolled his eyes. That was common sense, but the student did not seem to know. At least he was taking notes, and that was better than nothing at all. The magic clashing subject was pretty interesting anyhow. The phoenix itself was magical, and he wondered how one could obtain such a beast. And the class was dismissed. He packed his things and left eagerly. |

It was getting really close to the holidays and Bryce Chamberlin adored it. He looked forward to the weeks ahead, and he really wanted to spend some time with his sisters. After all, the Ravenclaw missed them a lot, and he hated being the youngest and the only one in the school. It just blew. Bryce walked into the classroom and he took his seat near the front where he would wait for Rosie to come and sit down next to him. They always sat together even though he was interested in Sofii. They were both artists, or aspiring artists. Bryce really looked forward to the class ahead since he liked attending the class. Bryce did not really have a least favorite anymore, but the less spells, the better for him. And from what he had seen so far with the greeting, he had a feeling that the day of Transfiguration, they were going to be enduring a lecture. A long one. So he got out his note taking equipment to get the things down by his experience of lip reading. He was really good at it. There were certain things that could be charmed or transfigured? Clashing Magic, that was the title and he wrote it down and underlined it. He had always wondered that, but apparently it could not be done. He wrote down everything that she was saying from what he was reading, but he did not see the question asked so he did not know what she had said anyhow. They were told more about a phoenix and he enjoyed that much. They were soon dismissed, and he wondered more about the subject. So he went to the library to do some personal research. |

Damon Kyle was really glad to be attending another class today. Everything about magic made Damon giddy, from Transfiguration to Potions, though Defence Against the Dark Arts was a lot different. He often did not appreciate that class. Damon was really happy about the other classes though! Damon really wanted to just sit down and get started! Damon found his seat in the front of the class, and he settled in beside his best friend. He waited for the others to arrive which was getting closer and closer. He was one of the first ones to come in here, out of all of the third years anyway. Third years were plentiful for some reason, and then when one looked at the older students, it was not so much! At least the holidays were coming soon, and he could not wait to go home, to his new family. The lecture today was over something that would qualify as clashing magic. He wrote that down in his notes since it was very important for him to do that. Damon never knew that they could not charm or transfigure! He did not see why not! But when Professor Davershire went into an explanation of it, then he understood more about it. Maybe one day he would have wanted to transfigure a book into a dragon, but he couldn’t do that since it was impossible. Dragons and stuff, he had never seen one and never knew they existed until recently, he was just amazed. A student asked a question, and he wrote down the answer since he thought that he would find it useful. With the class concluding, Damon packed his notes which were a lot, and then he left the classroom happily. |

The week was now week four, which meant that it was just that much closer to the holidays, and Nikandros Matthias was perhaps one of those that did not want to go home that much. The Gryffindor third year walked into the classroom and he found his seat in the middle of the classroom where he would have to avert the attention away from him. The boy did not want to really go home and face all of his brothers. His brothers were just so annoying, and his dad did not have much time for them anyway. He could not wait until he could graduate and get on with his life, whatever he wanted to be that is. He did not really know what he wanted to be yet. Was that bad? He hoped not. He looked up when the other third years arrived. They were ready to begin another day. Apparently this week was going to be a lecture one since they started right into the lecture, and they were not told to get their wands out. Nikandros was not very disappointed, because he did not care. Nikandros just wanted to sleep actually. He was tired. But even though he was tired, gathering up the note taking equipment and he got started on writing down the notes over what he thought was clashing magic, which he had a fair bit of knowledge about from his dad. His dad was really good at figuring these things out and telling the kids. Though he did not really know much about other transfigurations. He raised his hand and he said, “But I’ve heard you can use a stunning spell or a conjunctivitis curse against a dragon. How does using charms or transfiguration differ?” Nikandros was curious and he got his answer. He made sure to write it down too. Even writing down the phoenixes was new to him, but he was glad once they were dismissed. |

The fourth week of classes was definitely going better than the last. Ty had started taking his time in the morning once more. He stressed less about being late, knowing that it would be a tiny mark on his record. That and he hadn't actually been late before, so that wasn't a major problem. This however meant that he got up a little bit later than he would normally. That he took more time in the morning when he got up. That he made sure that he would still have plenty time to get ready for each class, but also just gave him the opportunity to sleep in a little more. Which he was grateful of. It was nice to be able to sleep just that little bit longer. He thought that it was a good thing as he awoke on the morning of the fourth transfiguration lesson feeling a lot better than before. Feeling more awake and alert. He got up and took his usual morning shower. Taking his time because he could. He got dressed and then put on his contacts. He had gotten increasingly good at putting his contacts in without a mirror to help him, but, he did prefer using one. It was the one part of his morning that he never rushed. His contacts were for him to take his time, nothing else. Once that was done, the boy gathered his books and his wand, putting them all into his rucksack and then headed out of the room and to the class. At the class he noticed that while many people had arrived, his best friend had not. He felt a little sad about this, but was also just knowing she would arrive a little after him. So he took this time to wander to the back of the room, to his own seat. Pulling out the transfiguration book and wand, waiting for the professor to begin her lesson. He hoped that like the previous one they'd do another spell, he had enjoyed that. But, once the rest of the students had appeared, and the professor began, the young teen was quickly able to tell that he was wrong, this was a lecture class. So, he pulled out his parchment and quill so he'd be able to take notes as he listened to the professor. It was something that he hadn't thought too much about. The back of his mind had always believed that magic was endless, that with the right amount of power, close to anything was possible. it was clear he was wrong. Ty made little notes of what the professor said, with his own personal note to read up more about it later. The lecture was pretty long though, and as it reached the end, the teen felt himself grow tired. More sleep or not, it didn't help against boring lectures. Finally the class ended, and homework was set out. The teen packed away his things and left for the great hall with the intention of doing the homework at a later point. |
