Lesson One:

[justify]     Professor Effie Snow sat at a large oak desk situated at the front of the quiet Arithmancy Classroom. The room was essentially a blank canvas, sparsely furnished with a series of desks organized in four neat rows of four desks each aligned precisely before her. Two blackboards were arranged behind her, balanced with one to either side of his desk, providing an odd symmetry to the room. Effie liked it though. Who was she to be against something a little bit out of the ordinary. Professor Snow glanced over at her large grandfather clock, noting that the students, at least those that would cared not to be late, would be arriving soon. Effie really did hope that they would try to arrive on time though. It was her duty to introduce third year students to the discipline of Arithmancy. Which would be a little hard if no one showed up.

When footsteps rose to Effie's ears she beamed. Here they were! As the first students began to enter Professor Snow made note of where in the classroom they all sat. This may or may not end up helping her with names when it came time to it. Some of the students she may already know though, if they were Hufflepuff's at least. When it was time for class to be started, Professor Snow carefully rose and began the students first look into the world of Arithmancy. Her voice was clear but soft and gentle. Like a mother that was talking to her own child perhaps. "Arithmancy is the analysis of numbers and the associated numerical values given to the letters of the alphabet. Those of you who are disciplined enough to perform the required calculations with precision will be provided with unique insight into yourself and others and ultimately, develop the skill to allow Arithmancy to offer guidance into your future decisions. Greetings everyone. I am Professor Effie Snow, I'd like to welcome you all to your first year of Arithmancy!" Effie greeted sweetly. Hopefully they would all sense that she was about as sweet as can be. Professor Snow surveyed the room, ensuring that all eyes were focused on her at the moment. Satisfied that she had the attention of the students, the professor withdrew her wand and pointed it at the blackboard to the student’s left. Neatly printed cursive letters revealed themselves in parallel lines across the top of the board.

Arithmancy Classroom Rules

1. Respect Me - Listen Attentively
2. Respect Each Other - Punctuality is mandatory.
3. Respect Time - Assigned work to be submitted on or before the due date.
4. Respect the Subject - Do your work carefully or it is meaningless.
5. Respect Yourself - Do not submit work that is below your ability.

"I know rules aren't very much fun. So I kept them as simple as possible. Now, back to the lesson! People have studied Arithmancy for thousands of years in order to better understand themselves and to unravel the mysteries of the future. Many early civilizations including the Egyptians, Hebrews, Chaldeans, and Hindus studied numbers as a science, believing that everything hides in numbers and that a person who understands the energies associated with certain numbers can discover their secret." Effie started her lecture back up again. Arithmancy could be a little hard to understand sometimes. But she has faith that this group was going to get the idea of it pretty quickly. "The Greek astrologist, mathematician, and philosopher Pythagoras spent a significant part of his life concentrating on the study of numbers. He was convinced that numbers had mystical properties, and he defined the system of classification that we still use today. Pythagoras believed that numbers contained the secrets of the universe and with him is where your study of Arithmancy will begin."

Professor Effie Snow returned to her desk as their homework was revealed on the board behind her after a swift flick of her wand. It was a simple assignment. Hopefully they wouldn't be too upset with her for giving them homework. With a wave she dismissed her class.

2037 'Puff Head Girl | Every Piece - Thorns and All | ❤ Jai and Tiziano ❤

Ai had just woken up, from what anyone would consider a short nap. With a few stretches and yawns, she was out of bed and making her way to the bathroom to ready herself for the day. She had classes today and she was happy and unhappy about it at the same time. The young Hufflepuff was happy because the class she would be having today interests her and that would be Arithmancy. What made her feel unhappy was that she was having a slight fever once again. But then again, at the moment, she deemed her classes to be more important and that she had to make up for her low grades last semester. As soon as the young girl left the baths, she dressed herself up and made her way down to the Great Hall to have a bit of something to eat.

It was not long before Ai was now walking inside the Arithmancy classroom and was already taking her seat. She was one of the first students to enter and notice Professor Snow. "I guess I can't fail this class," she thought to herself as soon as she figured out that her Head of House was now her Arithmancy professor as well. Soon enough, class began. Ai listened carefully as the professor had introduced Arithmancy to the class and also introduced herself. Ai had just wished that class would end right after that, but the gods didn't intend to grant that wish as the rules were written on the board and Professor Snow continued her discussion. Class went on for quite a while and the young Hufflepuff couldn't help but be enthusiastic about their next lessons, but she knew that after class she still had something to deal with, and it was homework. As soon as class was dismissed, Ai made her way to the Library to finish her essay.

PYTHAGORAS

Pythagoras was of the most famous and controversial ancient Greek philosophers. He spent his early years on the island of Samos, off the coast of modern Turkey. At the age of forty, however, he emigrated to the city of Croton in southern Italy and most of his philosophical activity occurred there. Pythagoras wrote nothing, nor were there any detailed accounts of his thought written by contemporaries. By the first centuries BCE, moreover, it became fashionable to present Pythagoras in a largely unhistorical fashion as a semi-divine figure, who originated all that was true in the Greek philosophical tradition, including many of Plato's and Aristotle's mature ideas. A number of treatises were forged in the name of Pythagoras and other Pythagoreans in order to support this view.

Pythagoras made influential contributions to philosophy and religious teaching in the late 6th century BC. He is often revered as a great mathematician, mystic and scientist, but he is best known for the Pythagorean theorem which bears his name. However, because legend and obfuscation cloud his work even more than that of the other pre-Socratic philosophers, one can give only a tentative account of his teachings, and some have questioned whether he contributed much to mathematics and natural philosophy. Many of the accomplishments credited to Pythagoras may actually have been accomplishments of his colleagues and successors. Whether or not his disciples believed that everything was related to mathematics and that numbers were the ultimate reality is unknown. It was said that he was the first man to call himself a philosopher, or lover of wisdom, and Pythagorean ideas exercised a marked influence on Plato, and through him, all of Western philosophy.
