Lesson Two:

Professor Snow arrived early for the second week’s lesson and proceeded to place each student's essay on the desk that the student had sat in the previous week. Hopefully they were going to remain sitting in those seats. When she had finished, Professor Snow returned to her desk and waited for the students to arrive. When all of the students had arrived and were prepared to begin their lesson, Professor Snow rose and began addressing the class, pacing back and forth in front of her desk with an almost rhythmic cadence to his movements. “Last lesson, I offered a brief introduction to our course of study and asked for an essay on Pythagoras. You will likely be relieved to know that it is the last essay that I am expecting to assign in this course. With respect to your essays, I was pleased to see that at least a few of you were able to make the connection between Pythagoras, the world in general, and more specifically, a number system that is used in the study of our world through Arithmancy. Today, we will be using the Pythagorean Number System to evaluate first names.”

Professor Snow stopped at the midway point of the two blackboards and leaned against her desk with a soft smile. Hopefully the class was paying attention by this point. “The Pythagorean System is built around the numbers one through nine, each of which has its own distinct characteristics and energy vibrations. Each letter of the alphabet is linked to one these nine primary numbers, making it possible to break down words into their component letters and evaluate them.” The professor softly waved her wand and a chart revealed itself on the left blackboard.

Quote:

1 - AJS
2 - BKT
3 - CLU
4 - DMV
5 - ENW
6 - FOX
7 - GPY
8 - HQZ
9 - IR

"A copy of this chart appears on Page 7 of your textbook, although you may wish to copy it down as we will be using it extensively over the coming weeks.” Professor Snow paused for a moment, ensuring that she had regained the attention of all of the students as many of them began copying the table onto their parchment. For them this could be a difficult concept to grasp but once they got it she was sure it would stick with them. It was one of the building blocks for later skills. “Perhaps nothing is quite so revealing about an individual’s character as their name. For today’s lesson, we will be focusing on first names and I will be showing you an example of how the system works by substituting numbers from the chart for the letters that make up the name.” Professor Snow once again pointed her wand at the blackboard and this time lines of text and numbers revealed themselves one line at a time.

Quote:

Alicia = A + L + I + C + I + A

= 1 + 3 + 9 + 3 + 9 + 1

= 26

“Now, all two digit numbers with the exception of 11 and 22 which are unique, should then be separated into their individual digits and added together as such…”

Quote:

= 2 + 6

= 8

“Therefore, the name Alicia corresponds to the Number 8, which refers to the qualities of Transformation and Manifestation. The definitions for each of the nine primary numbers as well as those for 11 and 22 appear in your textbook on Pages 8 and 9. I have transcribed the information for the Number 8 so that we might work together on the blackboard.” Professor Snow pointed at the blackboard on the right, revealing the following quote from Numerology and Gramatica:

Quote:

The Number 8:

Now that I have discovered Heaven, how do I bring it to earth? There is power behind MANIFESTATION and I want to do what it takes to attain what I want. The eight becomes very busy managing and supervising with its sense of judgment. Behind the vibration of the eight is:

Power
Authority
Capability
Organization
Efficiency
Skill
Hard work

“Now, I do not want you to get the impression that all people whose names are linked to the Number 8 are destined to assume positions of power, to become Headmaster or Headmistress of a School of Magic even, but in this particular case I believe that the first Headmistress we had at this school was in balance with these characteristics. Of course, for every individual who has achieved such balance, there are many who are either underbalanced or overbalanced within the vibrations of these attributes. The purpose of Arithmancy is to become aware of the attributes that are linked to you as an individual and then to seek balance within the vibrations of these attributes. The concepts of balance, vibrations and attributes will all become clearer to you as your Arithmancy studies continue, for now I simply wish for you to experiment with your first name and the Pythagorean System.”

I N S T R U C T I O N S:
1) Role play the lesson
2) Do the calculations required to determine what number corresponds with your first name. Then locate the information that corresponds to your number on the pages from the textbook pages provided above.
3) Write a one paragraph reflection on how you feel about the attributes linked to your name and whether you are currently balanced or out of balance with the attributes.
