Professor Black was busy working with a case on her desk as the students filed into the room. She began to walk around as she greeted them, handing each a snail. "Welcome, welcome. Please sit down quickly. We need to get right to work. This week we are going to work with something a bit more difficult. Snails are invertebrates, which will help make this a bit easier, but you do still need to concentrate more than with the erasers from last week."

Moving to the front, she put the extras in the case again, and turned to the class. "The method will be the same as always. However, with a living creature, you do need to remember that splinching is possible. Who knows what splinching is?" She looked around, and noted that a few hands were raised. She called on one, and listened to the answer. "Exactly. Thank you. Now we need to make sure that we are vanishing the entire creature, not just part of it." She smiled, then moved to take a snail out of the case. Setting it on her desk, she smiled at the class.

"Now, I want to mention that it is important to remember a bit of safety with vanishing spells. Never use them on another human being. It is not safe to do. You may land yourself in trouble with the Ministry if you do. Now, back to our little friend here." She smiled and then raised her wand, and with three taps in the air above the snail she said the spell and the snail was gone. "There. Nothing horrible. Now I want you all to try. I will be walking around as always if you need help."

Kate made her way to the Transfiguration classroom. The sun was shinning through the windows as she made her short journey to the Fifth Floor. She loved where the Hufflepuff common was.Didn't take much effort to go anywhere. That suited Kate perfectly as she hated going up flights and flights of stairs plus when you are carrying heavy bags,it kills you trying to have to walk up so many flights of stairs, going down them isn't easy either as you have to watch where you step. She walked into the classroom and sat down in her usual seat. She took out her wand as she presumed it would be a practical class due to last weeks class.Kate was quite enjoying transfiguration. She had never liked it in first year and the only reason she had kept it on was for the job of an auror in the future,if that's where her heart lay.But as the years went by she liked it more and more. She wasn't expecting a snail being handed to her.She tried not to scrunch up her face which she did successfully. She quickly put it down on her desk and wiped her hand.Poor snail didn't know what was coming it's way.She felt bad for making it vanish into nothingness.Kind of unfair and she knew in the muggle world some insect fanatic would call it insect cruelty or something. But Kate wasn't particularly fond of snails so this one would slide past her conscience. When Professor Black asked a question,Kate put up her hand with out thinking.Usually she wouldn't know questions like these but due to her extra hours last year she actually knew things that she usually wouldn't.When Professor Black asked her she said "Splinching is the separation of random body parts. It occurs when the mind is insufficiently determined".Thankfully she was right and professor Black then explained about using the spell on humans. It was a dodgy spell and a good way of getting rid of annoyances. After the professor demonstrated,Kate looked at the snail in front of her. "Sorry buddy"She said under her breath before tapping the snail three times."Evanesco"She said, concentrating on the snail. She was about to smile when she saw the snail was gone but sadly only the snails shell had disappeared. "Whoops"She whispered. She tapped the snail three times again "Evanesco"She said concentrating even more, this time the rest of the snail disappeared. She asked the professor for another snail and this time it disappeared fully and thankfully no slpinching.Once she was happy she collected her things, thanked the professor and left.

Auror|Former Ravenclaw Prefect and Captain|

Sara walked into class, just making it in time. The Professor was already walking around, handing out snails. She'd been dreading this class. She hadn't liked making an inanimate object disappear, but making a living thing disappear-that seemed so wrong. She frowned as she got her spell; "I don't want to do this.." she whispered quietly, stroking her snail along it's shell. This poor creature didn't deserve to cease existing-it hadn't done anything wrong. She frowned. This would be needed for the OWLs, but it didn't feel right. "I'm so sorry." she whispered, looking at it as she held it up to her face. She didn't want to do this.

She listened as Kate answered the question-not wanting to speak up, the thought of getting rid of only part of the snail seemed even more cruel than making it disappear completely. Part of her felt this was a bit like a switching spell, and she decided that she needed to know the snail completely. She studied it, watching how it moved, knowing the shade of it's skin, every pattern on it's shell. It was a grim study, she didn't like thinking of the task ahead of her. Eventually, she knew that she could see the snail completely in her mind. It was time to do the spell; "I'm so sorry-this is a horrible spell." she whispered once more, wanting it to be over with; "Evanesco!" she announced, and the snail disappeared immediately. She rose from her seat, though many of the others weren't finished. She shot an angry look at the Professor, though it really wasn't her fault. It was on the syllabus, and so she had to teach it, but Sara was angry about what she had to do. It wasn't right, it wasn't just. With that, she stalked out of the classroom, slinging her satchel over her shoulder.
