Care of Magical Creatures Professor (Years 5-7)

Harry finished going over his lesson plan for the day. He was starting to get used to this whole teaching malarkey so it was starting to get easier for him to prepare for the lessons. The lesson itself was easy for him to teach as he knew his subject matter like the back of his hand. He was excited about teaching although, today he knew wouldn’t be so fun – for the students at least, as it would be a heavily theory based lesson. He had always hated these kinds of classes when he was younger, even in this lesson, but it had always managed to keep his interest just enough to do well enough in the lesson. Although with the seventh years preparing themselves to do their NEWT exams he knew that they needed as much theory as possible to help them in passing their exam and if any students were interested in going into an area that involved working with animals then everything would come in very useful for them. As he paced around the grounds he waited for the students to arrive and not much longer the bunch of seventh years started to arrive. He had conjured up a few blankets and pillows for the students to sit down on today as they would be taking a few notes. The weather was starting to get much better as it was now spring time in New Zealand so sitting on the ground shouldn’t be a problem for them. When the students had all gathered around, Harry took the role and smiled over at the students. “Well don’t just stand there. Sit yourselves down and get comfy because, unfortunately, I have a bit of a boring lesson for you but I’ll try my best to make it as painless as possible for you all.” he told the students with a soft smile, he really didn’t like doing this to them, their NEWT year was bad enough. Once the students had made themselves comfortable and all had their writing equipment out he started to talk, walking around them a bit just so he wasn’t standing in front of them all like the Professor he was. “Now Professor Smith informed me that you studied Lethifolds in your last Defence against the Dark Arts lesson, so would anyone care to tell me what they are more commonly known as?” he asked as he scanned the students and when one raised their hand he picked them and smiled when they gave their answer. “Excellent, yes. A Lethifold is also known as a Living Shroud. It’s known as this simply because of its similar appearance to that of a Dementor. Take a few extra points.” he said with a tiny smirk knowing that no matter how old the student was, everyone loved getting extra credit points. “Now, no – one knows what these creatures look like as anyone who has been unfortunate enough to come into contact with one never lived to tell the tale. By that statement you could probably guess that they are carnivorous.” he told the students, figuring that he was getting them in the mood for Halloween with the scary creatures. He laughed to himself at the silly idea and continued with the lecture. “Lethifolds glides along the ground and other surfaces in an unknown form of locomotion in search of its prey, humans. It attacks its prey at night, when the target is asleep, and suffocates and digests it in its bed. The fortunate few who have been able to escape from the presence of one described it appearance resembles that of a black cloak roughly half an inch thick, although it gets thicker if the Lethifold has recently digested a victim.” he finished. He knew the students would already know this from Professor Smith’s class but it never hurt to get the information reiterated to them to heighten its importance. “Now onto another creature that is easily as dangerous.” Harry stated simply. “The Manticore is one of the Wizarding Worlds most dangerous creatures. It is a sentient beast, capable of intelligent speech, but has not been classified as a being due to its violent tendencies.” He told the seventh years, not many creatures went unclassified so this one should be easy to remember. “A Manticore has a human-like head, a lion's body, and a scorpion's tail with a stinger. A Manticore's skin repels all known charms, so is effectively hard to subdue a Manticore with magic.” he said, his voice maintained a hint of seriousness as none of these creatures were to be taken lightly. “The Manticore originated in Greece, and is as rare as the Chimaera. The sting of the Manticore is instantly deadly, and it is reputed to croon softly to its victims as it devours them.” Harry looked around seeing if they were all paying attention. “Right class.” Harry said clapping his hands to wake up anyone that had fallen asleep, it was a nice day out and they were sitting on the ground so it was easy to go off into one’s own day dreams. “The lesson is at an end. No homework tonight. Enjoy the rest of the week. See you all next lesson and you must attend.” he told the class and he meant it because missing next week would be a great shame indeed as he had planned to treat them after the boring lesson. Homework: For full marks: RP the lesson. Please be creative. First poster: Please reply giving the answer for extra credit points. |
