Care of Magical Creatures Professor (Years 5-7)

Harry had never been one to have an office job as he didn’t like the feeling of been cooped up in a small office all day doing paperwork. He had always been more of an outdoorsy person and young at heart –once have the job of owning Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes simply because of his love for what was sold there. So when the job for Care of Magical Creatures became available at the local school Harry saw it as a new opportunity for him. He had never thought of himself as a Professor as the job involved him being professional and that was just not him. Although this particular subject had been one close to his heart when he attended school and the job allowed him to be outside most if not all of the time and he would be doing something he enjoyed at least. After he had applied for the job he had never expected to actually get the job but as he stood outside in the meeting area for student taking Care of Magical Creatures it finally started to sink in that he was now a Professor.

Having put much thought into his lessons Harry was feeling rather confident about his first lesson with the seventh years; he felt he had done well with the previous years already so hopefully it got easier with time. He was to be teaching the upper years so at least he knew his students would be well adapted to the school and its surroundings now, as well as the rules. As he waited for the students to arrive he quickly went over the lesson outline, he wanted this to go off without a hitch so he could prove to his employer and himself that he could do this job. Noticing the students starting to arrive he gave a few of them a small smile as he waited for the rest of them to arrive. A few minutes later the class looked full and calling for attention he took the roll, mentally trying to remember the names of a few of the students as they made themselves known to him. Happy that everyone was hear he put the class register to the side and started the class, trying to not let his nerves get the best of him. “Good morning seventh years. My name is Harry Thornton but Professor Thornton or Sir will be more than acceptable. Now I should know most of your names from last year but if I don’t I will hope to get to know you better as I will be taking you for your NEWT year, here at Hogwarts New Zealand.” he tried to keep his voice steady so he took a small breath between his words.

With introductions over he figured it was time to get on with the lesson at hand. Being in their seventh year he expected the students to be well aware of their up and coming exams and just how important they would be for them, whether Care of Magical Creatures was important for them or not he didn’t know, but they had chosen the subject so it must hold some sort of significance for them; if not just for the enjoyment of the class. “Today we will be studying Acromantulas and Basilisks." He told the students first off so they could get their head around what they would be studying today. “Now, can anybody tell me what an Acromantula actually is?" He asked, pointing to the first hand that rose. When the student gave their answer he gave them a small smile and nodded his head. He was quite impressed with their answer and figured that they realised how important their final year was and possibly did some reading in advance. “Correct! Take three house points." Harry said chirpily, taking note of the student and what house they were in.

Now came the boring part. "Acromantulas are native to places such as Borneo. They are also known to feed on Humans.” With a wave of his hand an image appeared in front of the students.

“This is an Acromantula. They are vicious, deadly creatures. Their poison is worth thousands of galleons to the pint. Acromantula vary in size, and colour ranging from yellowy orange to jet-black, much like this one right here." he said, referring to the picture. Once he felt that the students had seen enough of it he waved his hand once more and it disappeared. "Now, many people go their whole lives without ever seeing these creatures, which is a shame, because they truly are beautiful" Thornton said with a softness in his voice. Being Care of Magical Creatures Professor he had a fondness of all creatures regardless of just how dangerous they actually were.

“Not many creatures top the ferocity of an Acromantula. One that does is the Basilisk. The basilisk is a long snake, that if you stare in its eyes then you die. Although, if you see the eyes, but not directly then you will be petrified. A Phoenix, and perhaps other non-human associated creature, is immune to this deadly gaze. Spiders are terrified of the Basilisk and flee before it. There is legend that their once dwelled a Basilisk in the original Hogwarts under a bathroom in a place called the Chamber of Secrets." He said darkly, figuring that the students probably already heard about this in History of Magic. "A girl that attended there, died when she stared at its eyes.” he stopped once more, letting it sink in just how dangerous the creatures could actually be so it was not to be taken lightly.

“The Basilisks fang is poisonous, and death is nearly always instantaneous. The way to create a Basilisk is to cause an egg of a chicken to hatch under a toad. Basilisk skin is armoured like that of a dragons, which deflects spells cast upon it. The Basilisk sheds its skin at intervals, like all other snakes, when it grows. In Greek Mythology, it is depicted in three ways: a huge lizard, a giant snake, and a three foot high rooster.” he rhymed off a number of facts that the seventh years may find useful for their NEWTs. "Basilisks can live a natural life of up to nine hundred years. Their mortal weakness is the crowing of a rooster. Basilisks feed off vertebrate animals and finally the male can be distinguished from the female by a single scarlet plume on its head." He hoped that he wasn’t boring the students too much but unfortunately it had to be done. With a wave of his hand an image appeared, there was a mixture of reactions but he had expected that.
