Care of Magical Creatures Professor (Years 5-7)

Harry regretted being a Professor on days like this, days where he actually had to be a Professor and do work with his students instead of the fun Professor that let the class have field trips and practical work. Although this was his seventh years and he was sure they were used to much more hard and rigorous work that what he was going to give them with other classes where it’s all theory. Also with it being their NEWT year they had to start learning some theory or they may find their exams harder than expected. Sure practical work and seeing creatures that they studied close up was good but only to a certain extent, it really had to be matched with the theory of it all. “Afternoon guys!” Harry welcomed them to their meeting space. Today there was cushions and blankets on the ground as they would need to be comfortable to write notes. “This lesson won’t be as fun as last lessons. We will be covering three creatures this afternoon, so making notes is advisable.” he told the class, his voice some grim as he probably wasn’t going to enjoy this anymore than his class. “Right the Quintaped, also known as the Hairy MacBoon,” he paused as he waited for anyone who wished to laugh to do so now, “is a dangerous magical beast that is only found of the Isle of Drear, which has been made Unplottable because of the danger. It has five legs, each ending in a clubfoot, and is covered with thick, red-brown hair. It is carnivorous, with a particular taste for humans.” He paused for another moment before continuing, wondering how many students would think the creature was funny now. “According to legend, Isle of Drear was populated by two wizard families, the MacBoon clan and the McClivert clan, who were apparently rivals. The family heads, Dugald McClivert and Quintius MacBoon, got drunk and engaged in a wizard's duel, which resulted in Dugald's death. In retaliation, the McCliverts attacked the MacBoons, turning them all into monstrous five-legged beasts. However, the MacBoons were infamously inept wizards, and the McCliverts realised too late that they had made the MacBoons infinitely more deadly. Despite the McClivert’s desperate attempts to untransfigure them, the MacBoons killed all the resident McCliverts.” he stopped for a breather, there was a lot to take in and he wanted to the students to be able to keep up with him. At least with this creature there was a somewhat interesting annicdote with it to lessen the pain. “Whether the legend is true or not is unclear. There are no surviving McCliverts or MacBoons today that can relay the fate of their ancestors. For their part, the Quintapeds have resisted all attempts by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures to untransfigure them. It can only be assumed that, if they are indeed transfigured MacBoons, then they are happy to live the rest of the lives as Quintapeds.” he said, finishing off all the information he had on the creature. “A Chimaera is a type of hybrid animal native to Greece. The Chimaera is a vicious, bloodthirsty creature with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a dragon's tail. Because of their ferocity, Chimaeras are classified by the Ministry of Magic as XXXXX, very dangerous, and their eggs are classified as Class A Non-Tradeable Materials. There is only one recorded instance of a Wizard killing a Chimaera, although the victory was soured when the Wizard fell from his winged horse.” Harry continued from one creature to the next fairly quickly but there wasn’t as much to cover with the second creature and there would be even less with the last creature but he was aware of the time limit he had one class. Harry looked at his watch. “Right time is against us. The Nundu is a giant mammal similar to a leopard that is native to East Africa. It moves silently, despite its gigantic size, and is considered by some to be the most dangerous creature alive. The breath of the Nundu is toxic and filled with disease. This alone can wipe out entire villages of people. The Nundu is extremely hard to subdue, and takes just around one hundred Wizards working together to subdue one.” Harry let a sigh of relief, he had finished the class and no one had seemed to have fallen asleep but to be lying on the ground in the good weather it would be hard not to. “Review your notes for homework and class dismissed.” he told them, hoping they would review notes as next week would be the last class of the semester and they would be doing some revision. Homework: For full marks: RP the lesson. |

Dannii frowned when she reached Care of Magical Creatures and noticed the blankets and pillows set out. That always meant a boring lesson. Dannii chose not to sit on a blanket or a pillow, remembering how she had fallen asleep last time they had a theory based lesson. She pulled out her note pad and quill and waited for class to start. Hopefully there wouldn't be much to write down. Of course we would be covering 3 different creatures today. Dannii thought regretting coming to class at all today. One glance at Professor Thornton though and she didn't regret it anymore. Maybe a lesson spent just staring at him without looking creepy wont be so bad. How does he manage to make taking notes interesting? Dannii wondered as she listened to the story about how Quintaped's came into existence. Or at least the legend of how they came into existence. Why in the world someone would transfigure their enemies into something far more dangerous was completely beyond Dannii. As she listened she took a few notes mostly on what the creature looked like and how deadly it was. Before the information about quintapeds could even soak in Professor Thornton started on the next creature. A lion goat dragon thing from Greece. Why do they always seem to have the most scary creatures? Dannii wondered. Wait, did he just say winged horse? I so need to get one of those. She was pulled from her thoughts of winged horses though when the professor started talking about a giant leopard. Wouldn't someone notice a few of those roaming around Africa? Dannii decided not to question it though and continued taking notes. Finally the lesson was over. And I managed not to fall asleep. she was very proud of herself. Dannii packed up her note book and writing utensils and headed back up to the castle. O=10 Edited by Professor Harry Thornton, Jul 29 2011, 12:54 AM.
