Josef Wolf folded his arms as the students filed in and took their seats. He gave the students a lopsided grin. “Greetings, students” He quickly took role call. He gazed over the class, “Well, remember the last lesson, you repotted the Mandrake seedlings. It wasn’t all too pleasant, was it?” He chuckled softly. “Their isn’t fatal, yet, but it will knock you out for a couple of hours, in the seedling stage. As they mature though, they put up more of a fight than what you saw in lesson two.”

Josef leaned against his desk and continued, “Those Mandrakes right now are in the toddler stage, and will be in the Childhood stage soon. Then, they will acquire more care and attention. But for now, all they need to get through the days is your care.” He paused. “They prefer damp soil, shade to sunlight, and an occasional food. It may sound easy, but it will take a combination of all three to help them thrive.”

His hand traced along the edge of the pot where his Mandrake waited. “Luther has been rather quiet for me. Its temper is nothing like my own.” He picked up a watering can and watered his Mandrake.

“Damp soil is the key to raising these Mandrakes. Watering them recurrently is a good idea.” Josef put the can down, and then placed it in a small beam of sunlight coming through the greenhouse ceiling. There were similar sized beams all along the table. “They like a little sunlight, it helps them grow stronger, but too much will dry them out and make them cranky. Pretty soon, if left in the sun, they’ll shrivel up and die from dehydration. So just a bit of sun here and there is good for them.”

Professor Wolf walked over to the corner and stated, “Over here in the corner are a few barrels filled with food pellets. Only a fourth of a scoop twice a day to keep them satisfied.” He then gave a fourth of a scoop to the pot. “You’ll have to poke it down gently into the compost or they will over stimulate themselves trying to get to the food. As for digestion.”

“Now, mimic what I did to your Mandrakes in front of you. Keep a record of your Mandrakes. There is a small book beside each Mandrake for you to keep a record in. You will name it, talk about the stage they are in, and what you did to help it grow that day. Just make it short. No homework for tonight. As soon as you are done recording, you may leave."

Homework: Just RP this lesson and write in your records book. Put the records book in Quotes. You’ll keep records of your Mandrake from now on. Remember, not a book in your record books.
