“Good morning and welcome to Hogwarts, first years,” Professor Woods announced with a kind smile, his faint Scottish accent prominent in the words of welcome, “I am your Herbology instructor, Professor Sage Woods. An exciting term this shall be, boys and girls, I hope you are looking forward to it as much as I am. Now please, sit down in the stools right in front of those troughs filled with potting soil and take out a quill and parchment so that we may begin.” He waited for the round faced students to take their seats and get out their supplies before clapping his dragon hide gloved hands together and clearing his throat. “Herbology is the study of plants and fungi, both magical and mundane. In this class you all will learn proper plant care as well as common magical properties and uses which include potion ingredients and medicinal purposes.” Sage pushed his horn-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose, “I trust all of you are taking notes. This will come up in the final exam.” Pausing, the former Hufflepuff watched the students diligently scribble down their notes and smiled. “You will be graded on three things; attendance, homework, and the final exam. I am a very fair grader and take pride in giving each student the grade they deserve. Of course, like any Professor, I would rather dish out O's rather than P's, but you earn what you work for. Always. I give homework at the end of each class and collect it at the start of each class. I am also quite generous with House Points. My office is always open for any student that is falling behind or would like to ask about extra credit or make up assignments. Does anyone have any questions about the class or the grading policy?” Taking a moment, Sage looked around, waiting to address any raised hands or questions. “To conclude today's class I would like to welcome you all once again to Hogwarts and I will see you next week, prepared to work. Your homework assignment is on the board, be sure to copy it down. Class dismissed.” Homework: RP today's lesson. Chose a magical plant and in a 100-200 word essay, identify and describe the plant, list its uses and importance, and include two interesting facts about the plant. Grades will be based on word count and creativity. For extra credit, please include a picture of the plant. Please site any information you get from copyrighted sources. Use the following code.

Kona Mason walked into the room with her head down. It was a greenhouse so she could feel the warm of the sunshine on her skin but, the tented glass didn't allow complete warmth. She fiddled with a piece of blonde hair as she sat down on one of the stools. Kona didn't get out her quill for, she could remember things quite well. She blew her bangs out of her eyes and began to draw on the table with her finger. It left marks in the dirt but, not a damage done. There was no sign of the tormenting little people she sees but she knew this peacefulness would not last for long. Kona sees people and they are all part of a kingdom she thinks she rules. The people are only about a foot tall but, some praised her and some mocked her. She was constantly getting in trouble because she would talk aloud to them and everyone said they don't exist. She had trouble believing so. Kona listened as he finished talking and she looked around at the other students. She was always so lonely when it came to meeting friends. When the teacher dismissed class she smiled at him and walked out the door. Kona tried her hardest to ignore the foot tall people walking around. Homework Nice job Miss Mason! Angus walked into the light of the Herbology greenhouse, his eyes took a good look around the area before at Professor Woods' request taking a seat on a stool in front of a trough. Angus was watching as a few of the other students messed around trying to be as unnoticeable as possible. Angus pulled out his quill and parchment, he was good at remembering things but when he needed something he figured it couldn't quite come to him, so he liked to write things down to remember them properly. As Professor Woods spoke Angus would write down anything seemingly important at the odd occasion. Angus was happy to see his 2nd homework assignment already and was extremely eager to get it done, as he listened to his instructions he was already thinking over what he was going to write about. He packed up his things into his bag and headed off out of the humid greenhouse into the delightful spring sunshine outside. Homework Interesting choice of plant Hooper. Your essay however does not meet the word count requirements. A-5 Edited by Professor Sage Woods, Jun 26 2011, 12:28 PM.

Gracie Williams skipped in the room. It was a gorgeous day and she was ready to go outside. She sat down next to Kona, who she knew from the common room, and another boy who she had seen in her classes, but did not know his name. She pulled out her quill and parchment as instructed and began to take notes. Gracie wrote down everything she was told three times. It was a trick her momma taught her, so that she could remember things. Herbology was one of Gracie's favorite subjects and she was so excited to learn more. She wouldn't dare miss a lesson unless she was sick. Gracie tucked a strand piece of her blonde hair neatly behind her ear, then stared at the teacher with her green eyes. She copied down there assignment quickly and got ready to leave. She would be going down to the Library to study on a plant so she could write the essay. When the professor dismissed the class, Gracie packed her things into her blue and black shoulder bag and skipped out of the room. Spoiler: click to toggle Good work Miss Williams. I believe Abyssinian Shrivelfigs are important as well. O-8 Edited by Professor Sage Woods, Jun 26 2011, 12:27 PM.

Minoas headed towards the greenhouses almost mechanically. His constant excursions the past week offered him a good knowledge of the whereabouts of Hogwarts grounds. He entered the room where the first herbology lesson was going to take place. Although the weather outside was freezing, inside the greenhouse there was a sweet, relaxing warmth that was bringing on drowsiness. He raised an eyebrow as soon as he realised that he was the only Gryffindor inside the room. He took a seat close to the three Ravenclaws that were already there, wondering where Paul or Ember could be. As soon as the room was filled with students, professor Woods appeared to introduce himself and make several announcements. The young Gryffindor, reached for some parchment and his pheasant quill and started taking notes. He had promised to himself that he was going to write down every piece of information that it was mentioned during the lessons. His goal was to achieve as many O's as he could. He longed for more practical staff but it was only the first lesson so he decided to be patient. He knew a few staff about herbs already from his parents and his mentor and he was looking forward to learn more. He wasn't particularly happy when they were dismissed as he had already to prepare homework for next time. He packed his staff and followed his fellow classmates outsite the greenhouses. Homework Excellent work Stratis, I am impressed! O-10 Edited by Professor Sage Woods, Jun 26 2011, 12:16 PM.

Astrid absolutely detested the idea of Herbology. As much as she loved learning, she didn't care for plants. Plants were just dirty. And Astrid hated dirt. While she showed no resistance - Astrid never showed any emotion, only passivity - there was a slight hesitation in her movements as she walked towards a seat in the greenhouse when encouraged by the professor. In front of the stools there were troughs of dirt...Astrid nearly screamed. She suspected she was going to have to take a long bath after this lesson. A long bath after every Herbology lesson for the next five years or so. Because of the way the classroom was set out, Astrid couldn't place her parchment, quill and ink the way she liked, and this made her feel even worse. Her hand trembled as she wrote, her notes taking on a slightly messy look that Astrid absolutely despised. Everything about this class was so messy. She could cope with a little bit of mess, but this...this was really testing her. Breathing deeply, Astrid attempted to calm herself so that her notes would at least be legible. The homework, especially, had to be legible - oh, she was so glad for written work, something she could complete in the sanctuary of the library! Nothing to do with dirt, only neat rows of books! Almost sighing in relief as they were dismissed, Astrid packed her things away and quickly retreated to the castle. That long bath was calling her name. Even though they hadn't touched any dirt, Astrid felt utterly filthy, and she was going to have to clean herself before she could do anything else.

Julia was rather curious upon entering the Greenhouses today. She'd grown up on her parent's farm before the age of five, decided she enjoyed playing with mud and whatnots in the garden- but all this was taken away from her when she'd moved. Her Grandmother didn't have a garden. Herbology seemed like a subject that Julia would enjoy. She sat down, taking out her parchment and quill, poised at the ready to speedily write down notes. She did wonder why magical people didn't just use pen and paper- it did seem so much easier- to her anyway. As the Professor spoke, the Ravenclaw's quill got extremely excited and random splotches of ink began appearing on her parchment. She wasn't very good at using ink and quill yet .___. After scribbling down the homework assignment in a partially legible form, the Wright packed up her things, managing to create more spots of ink in various locations of her bag.
