Kalif finished cleaning the blackboard. He disliked untidiness very much. He heard the students file in. Kalif turned around, his black robes swinging around his legs. He greeted, “Good morning, third years. To some of your dismay, as I assume, I am still here. If you have forgotten, I am Professor Styx, and by now, you should know the rules."

Kalif waved his wand and passed out papers to the students. “This year will be quite different from your previous years. This year, you all—” he paused. “will have to wait until next lesson to find out what you will be doing.”

“However, you will have to endure a lecture today about Herbology and its practices around the world. Does anyone know a country famous for its Herbalists?” His dark eyes scanned the room. He smirked, “No one?” Kalif waited a moment before laughing in his mind. “How surprising. Well, one is a well known-country. China. They are well known for their Herbalism and many of today’s practices come from them. Shennong is one of the first herbalists. In the Han dynasty, he imparted all his knowledge of the medicinal herbs to help China. He was their Emperor, and he worked closely with the farmers.”

Kalif paused to make sure no one had fallen asleep. He took a sip of water out of his bottle and began again, without setting the bottle down, “I expect everyone to be taking notes. All right, there are also many cultures that have influenced our knowledge and practices to us, and are still in use today. Romans and Greeks are an example. Hippocrates, who most know as a famous philosopher, provided a lot of information about Herbology.”

“Another would be the Native Americans. I do not use many of the Native American practices. However, despite of this, I’ll inform you what will be covered anyhow.” Kalif tapped the blackboard, and a picture of an oblong object, which looked like a long dried herb tied together with burning twine. He informed, “Interesting, she used a smudge stick, or a sage stick. It is used to cleanse areas of negative energies. It is more about spiritual balances than it is about Herbology.”

Kalif walked back over to the desk and sat down. He waved his wand and the blackboard cleared. It wrote the homework down. Kalif finished, “That will be enough for today. After your notes are finished, copy down the homework on the board. You may leave.” Kalif clasped his hands together and smirked. It wasn’t nearly as bad as he thought it would be.

Homework: RP today’s lesson, then write two more countries or cultures you might think have a rich history in herbology. No need to research, just give it a thought and write down their names.

Hayley entered the Herbology Greenhouse and spotted the professor in front of the class, getting ready for the class. The young girl spotted a seat that was unoccupied and walk toward it and sat on it. She bent down and took her bag that was placed on the ground and put it on the desk, taking out her quill and bottles of ink. Right before she was about to take a piece of paper Professor Styx passed the papers to the students. When he asked the students about a country that was famous for its Herbalist, Hayley stopped everything that she was doing and looked down trying to remember. Hmong? China? It took her a while to think. Right before she was about to raise her hand to give it a shot, the professor had answered the question and began to talk even more. Hayley did expect to take notes from the him. So she dipped her quill into the bottle of black ink and began taking notes.

Notes

Herbalism and many of today’s practices come from China.

Shennong (Their Emperor& Worked closely with the farmers) is one of the first herbalists in the Han dynasty. He imparted all his knowledge of the medicinal herbs to help China.

There are many cultures that have influenced our knowledge and practices to us, and are still in use today.
Romans and Greeks are an example. Hippocrates, who most know as a famous philosopher, provided a lot of information about Herbology.

Native Americans
A smudge stick, or a sage stick. It is used to cleanse areas of negative energies. It is more about spiritual balances than it is about Herbology

After taking notes, Hayley began to copy down the homework and left the room. The girl walk toward the library with her head held high as she sat on a seat all by herself and took out the paper and her quill and a bottle of black ink and began writing her homework.

[justify]     Ostensia Romanes wasn't really sure what to expect during her first Lesson of Herbology of Herbology for her Third year, she loved plants of all sorts so the class had never bothered her before. But according to the students around here it would start getting harder and harder every year that she advanced up, some even said that she would certainly enjoy Professor Styx as she progressed in years too. This was all sarcastically speaking of course because she could all catch their tones and dull looks easily. But of course she ignored them for the time being and decided to see for herself, people could be so stupid and judgemental at times that it made her want to throw up from just thinking about it, then again he had been pretty harsh the first two years. Was he really that mean to the upper years? Oh how she wished Damian was here in class with her.

Stepping into the Herbology greenhouse and sitting down into the first seat she saw that was empty and looked around, as weird as it sounded she really liked the smell of the outdoors so the idea of being around dirt and plants didn't bother her one bit. The rest of the class filed in and class was quickly started by Professor Styx, Ostensia thought he he just looked like he was grouchy today and soo not happy to see their 'smiling' faces. 'Can't really blame him, some of us are quite boring to look at.' She thought to herself playfully. She shook her head and tuned in just time to hear him ask a question about a place being famous for Herbalists. Since Ostensia really liked plants figured she would know the answer to this but surprisingly she did not and kept quiet while her bright blue eyes focused on Professor Styx carefully. He seemed to really know what he was talking about so Osa quickly pulled out some things and beginning to take notes on whatever he said to them. She may need this later. Just as Ostensia had finished most of her notes Professor Styx showed them something that the Native Americans a used...but apparently she had some knowledge of plants. 'A stick can clense the negative energies? Sounds cool but weird.'Snorting, she jotted down notes on the Sage Stick as well, even if she found it impossible for something like that to rid someone of negative energies, most people who had energy like that couldn't be helped anyways. When class was finished Ostensia jotted down the homework and placed her things into her bag, hopefully she could find time to do the assignment. Then Ostensia left the greenhouse.

Lapis entered the Herbology greenhouse with only a little trepidation. Although Professor Styx could be intimidating, the Ravenclaw had never given him any reason to dislike her in particular. She was a good student, who paid attention and actually wrote the notes (unlike many others), and she did quite enjoy the class. Lapis liked plants, despite the fact that her namesake was a stone, and she was always interested in learning more about them.

-Romans and Greeks: the philosopher Hippocrates provided lots of Herbological information.
-Native Americans: a smudge stick/sage stick is used to cleanse areas of negative energies- more about spiritual balances than Herbology, but it is made of herbs.

--Isabella Romanes was not really wanting to get out of bed, but she forced herself to. She knew that she had a good student and she wanted to become some sort of Prefect. She wanted something anyway. Isabella made her way down to the greenhouses with her Slytherin robes flowing behind her. She smiled as she entered the greenhouses with the diverse third years attending the class. She saw her sister, and took a seat next to her. Professor Styx soon introduced himself to the classroom, to those that did not know or remember who he was. Isabella had no idea who would not ever remember who he was. Shrugging, she glanced around to all the other third years. There were none really that she knew actually. She completely turned her attention to the front of the classroom, to hear what Professor Styx had to say. They were going to have to wait until next lesson to figure it out later. They were going to be talking about Herbology in other countries. They were going to learn about how other countries were with Herbology. Isabella nodded lightly with knowing that China used many things and everything in order to have healing medicinal herbs.

--Taking out some parchment, and ink, she started to taking notes for the classroom. She needed some notes for the class, because Herbology was one of the strictest classroom. They were told that other countries influenced the regions on how everything worked in the Herbology world. They were also told about what they were going to be covering anyway. One of them was a Sage stick. Isabella listened to what they did and wondered what it felt like to have one of those burned around her. She wanted to try it out actually. Isabella was glad that the class was over too, and she could actually go to the dorms. However, the notes were finished and they had to have homework tonight. She wrote down her homework on a sheet of parchment, and she took it to her dorm so that she could get a head start on it.
