Kalif sat behind his desk in his chair. As the students walked in and took their seats, Kalif waved his hand and the doors shut. His dark eyes were emotionless. He greeted them as usual, “Hello, class.” His tone was as cool as the winter air. “Your Mandrakes have fully grown by now.” He noticed some of the sadness on the students’ faces. They were not going to be pleased with this lesson. He knew this just by examining them. Kalif stood up as his dark, bottomless eyes gazed over the area before him. "Get your work robes and gloves. Long hair has to be tied back. Earmuffs are to be secured." Kalif glanced over the work spaces. Their mandrakes were potted and showered already. It was time. Kalif had placed chopping knives by each of their pots and a cutting board. If the mandrake was fat, it would just mean much more work for the students. This was Kalif's favorite part of the year. Rather than giving the students mercy by him eradicating the mandrakes himself, the entire class would do it. The Death Eater took the blade in his hand and had his own mandrake out of the pot and squirming on the table. Kalif cast the spell to make them all stop moving, to get the job done easier. The silencing spell helped a great deal as well. Kalif said, "We are going to chop up these mandrakes." It was a cruel punishment for the children it seemed. After a semester of bonding with them, they had to take the lives of their own mandrakes. Kalif brought their attention to him with a cold glare. "How to do this properly is starting with the head. Like so." Kalif put the knife to the mandrake's neck. With force, the knife went through the plant, and the mandrake could cry no more. "Proceed." After everyone had done so, Kalif simply said, "It is simple from there. Just chop up the rest of the bodies until they are in fine pieces. This will take all class period." He continued to do so with his mandrake, and once he finished - as he was quicker than the students because he had done this many times and he could cut through the mandrake with ease - he put the fresh mandrake into a bucket he supplied himself with, as he did with every other student. Kalif set the knife down and he gazed over the second years. Everyone was finished, and he had just enough time for a small lecture. "This was a crucial part of your lessons over Mandrakes here in Herbology. If any of you are going into the medical field where something like this is required, then you cannot chicken out of cutting up a plant. Mandrakes are not children or friends. They are plants, and they are useful in the wizarding society. Now, you are dismissed and don't forget to study for the test." Kalif resumed to watch over the students until the very last one left. Homework: RP chopping up your Mandrake. Exams are written based now, so study. |
