Professor Trina Adelia was seated on the desk, playing with an old muggle soda bottle when the students entered. "Welcome, welcome. Don't put your things down. Come on up here please. We don't have much time." As everyone gathered around her, she explained. "I'm Professor Trina Adelia. Your professor wasn't able to come today so I'll be your sub. We are continuing your study on muggle Pop Culture, but to do so, we are taking a field trip to my apartment. There we can actually experience what we are talking about. " The bottle started to glow. "Time to go. Get a finger on here!" She held the bottle out, preparing herself for the feeling of being yanked through space by her belly button. Shortly after, they landed in her living room. She set the bottle down on the fireplace mantle to allow them to have a return passage. "I have borrowed an item from my family." She led the way to the couch where she gestured for them to sit down on the large sectional. Professor Adelia opened up up a large armoire that revealed a thin flat screen television, a 40" set. "This is what is called a television. It was invented in the late 1800's in Germany and through many years of trying out new devices, it was ready for commercial use in the 1920's in Germany and then later to other countries a decade later." She smiled and summoned the snacks she'd prepared earlier. Bowls of popcorn and other various muggle treats along with soda pops floated in and arranged on the coffee table. "I want you all to experience this hands on. We control the television, or TV for short, by using this small object called a remote control. As long as it has a clear path between this small red button on the top to the TV, I can turn it on," she turned it on, "or off." It clicked off. "We will be watching a few classic TV shows so you all can get a clear picture on how the TV works. And also on what was popular with muggles long ago." She dimmed the lights enough so they could take notes still, turned on the TV and the show began. It was a very old black and white show called I Love Lucy. The main character was a charming married woman with a quirky sense of humor and little common sense to go along with it. The episode she had chosen was where Lucy took a job at a vineyard in Italy to get into character after an Italian director offered her a role in his movie. Lucy ended up in a large barrel with another Italian woman and they competed in stomping grapes, which ended up in a bad way, yet was very hilarious. When the show ended, she turned the set off and turned to the students. "At first televisions only aired in black and white until the color sets were introduced. Most shows only ran for thirty minutes with commercials. Muggles use the television as a way to advertise during television shows," she explained. "Now we'll use the rest of the time we have watching a few other classic shows. Enjoy!" Spoiler: click to toggle ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Your assignment this week is to enjoy the TV. Have fun! |
