Professor Trina Adelia was seated on the desk, playing with an old muggle soda bottle when the students entered. "Welcome, welcome. Don't put your things down. Come on up here please. We don't have much time." As everyone gathered around her, she explained. "I'm Professor Trina Adelia. Your professor wasn't able to come today so I'll be your sub. We are continuing your study on muggle communication systems, but to do so, we are taking a field trip to my apartment. There we can actually experience the various communication systems we are talking about. " The bottle started to glow. "Time to go. Get a finger on here!" She held the bottle out, preparing herself for the feeling of being yanked through space by her belly button. Shortly after, they landed in her living room. She set the bottle down on the fireplace mantle to allow them to have a return passage. "As you can see, the place has not changed too much, but I have borrowed a few items from my family." She led the way to the dining table. "I have borrowed a few phones and computers from my family so that you may play with them and get the feel for this type of communication." Professor Adelia opened up the laptop computer on the table and began to power it up. "This is what is called a computer. A laptop or notebook computer to be specific." She walked over to another computer on a desk next to the wall and switched that on as well. "This is also a computer, but this is a desktop version. They are named for their size and portability. The laptop is able to be taken outside as well as to school or anywhere else. The computer is a way to access information, as well as to communicate with others." She sat down and began to mess with the mouse next to the monitor. "This is the mouse. The only reason I can think of that it is named that is because of its shape and the cord. Makes it look kinda like a mouse." She shrugged her shoulders and smiled at the students. "Now on a computer, there are a variety of ways to communicate. First is email. This is a way to send letters that you type into the machine via the keyboard. Notice there are all the letters and numbers and many symbols on it." She motioned and showed off the keys. Then she started clicking around on the screen. "This is what an email looks like." A letter popped up on the screen. "This is one that was sent by my mother as a sample for you to look at." She made a few more motions and a list showed up. "This is a second way to communicate through a computer. This is an instant messenger. I will set this up so you may chat back an forth between the computers. It is a lot faster than email because the message is able to be read without having to open the letter." She quickly moved to the other computer, made a few motions and then typed rapidly. "Watch the screen." She hit a few more keys and up on the desktop popped: Quote: Hi everyone! This is what an instant message looks like. She then walked over to the table again, picking up the phones on the table. "These are all cellular phones. There is more than enough for each of us to use one for a while. I know some of you have never spoken on a phone before, and you will be able to experience that. There is also a function on the phone that allows you to type messages to each other. This is called text messaging." Professor Adelia set the phones down, and decided the best way to learn was to do. "Okay, I am going to let you play with these ways of communicating. I will be right here to help you out. The computers can message each other, and the numbers are here to message between phones. I know some of you have experience with this type of equipment, so please feel free to help out those who have not. Alright, feel free to play!" she said with a smile. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Your assignment this week is to play with the provided items. Feel free to ask for assistance if you need any, or call home if you are muggleborn. You are free to godmode me answering you. Have fun! |

For the 14 year old things were starting to feel somewhat normal again, sure she was still a bit down in the dumps but she was trying to get over it – it was just proving harder than she first imagined. Although she had to say she was looking forward to the Brightstone weekend that was fast approaching, it was always something to look forward too, but she was just glad to be getting out of the castle and not seeing the same faces day-in day-out, plus she had a few days work, which was always good to mind preoccupied. After her daily morning routine she made her way to class. Patricia made her way down to the First Floor Corridor and entered the Muggle Studies classroom, surprised to not see Professor Merrythought sitting at her desk. Instead it was an older woman who Patricia had seen around but didn’t exactly know who it was. Taking her seat she heard the woman tell them to not set there things down, which normally meant a few things but today she figured it meant a field trip. Making her way over to the desk where the teacher was Patricia waited until everyone was gathered around the desk and on the Professor’s command placed her finger on the bottle. Despite having travelled by portkey a number of times in her years at Hogwarts, the pulling sensation was still not one she liked. Feeling hard ground under her feet once again Patricia straightened up and observed the Professor’s flat. Patricia walked around the main living listening to the Professors words flow through her ears. All this was of course second nature to Patricia and she found it extremely easy to understand. Feeling a little guilty about having an advantage over the rest of the class Patricia turned her attention back to the Professor just as she dismissed them to look about themselves. Patricia spent a few more minutes looking at a few over the mobiles and computers, seeing how out of date the Professor and her family were, surprisingly they weren’t that old. After getting bored of showing some of her classmates how to hold a phone properly or how to use a mouse Patricia sat down on the couch and took one of the laptops with her. Stretching her legs out on the couch she placed the laptop on her lap and opened it, waiting for it to come to life. Once it had started up Patricia first of all checked her e-mails. Unsurprisingly she had a lot of spam mail but it quickly went. There was a few news letters from her line dancing groups and forums, nothing strange or startlingly, not that she expected there to be. With a few minutes left to spare Patricia decided to go on to MSN for a while, with any luck some of her friends would still be up. Opening the IM window she saw none of her contacts were online. Sighing she turned to talk to one of her classmates, not noticing a notification come up. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a flashing orange light, a convo? She thought to herself. Checking the name Patricia opened the window. Yes, of course Patricia felt bad for ignoring her brother like that. It wasn’t often that she would be able to talk to him under these conditions and she knew it probably wouldn’t happen again, but home was still a bit of a sore point for her and she didn’t feel like talking to them right now. Shutting down the progamme and the computer Patricia left it back to where it was. Making her way back over to the bottle she made her way back to the classroom, collecting her things she left for lunch.
