LESSON 5: MONEY & LIVING LIKE A MUGGLE
Money, money, money! It's so funny, in a rich mans world

Today, she was sure, was going to be a very interesting topic for all of them, the first part was going to be quite easy for them, she guessed, but the last part would be more of a fun challenge for each of them to encounter. It had taken a while for her to set everything up for the day ahead, and she was really hoping they came in muggle dress, like she had requested at the start of the year for every lesson of their lives in muggle studies. Aurora, herself, had put on some boot-cut jeans, high heeled boots, and a simple blouse just to fit in with the rest of the class, then she normally wore her floral clothing. She leant against her desk, and just felt like flopping down, however she couldn't, because she needed to be prepared for when they came in, and not have what happened one day, when she fell asleep... now that was humiliation. Sure enough, she heard the sound of her talkative third years and put down her work and opened the door, still not cheating by using magic, of course. As the students came flooding in, Aurora cleared her throat at the front of the classroom nearly the blackboard. "Hey guys, today were going to be covering two crucial topics, and they're both not devastatingly horrific, so don't moan" she chuckled at the people who looked like they were going to die.

"The first of these is money, now money is what makes the world go round. Everyone needs money to survive, well unless you capture your own food and get your water from a spring... but to be quite honest, I can't see any of you doing that. First of all I do have to ask this question, is there anyone here who has not used any sort of money before?" she asked the classroom, no one raised their hands. "Just as I thought, everyone has used money before in their lives. So, in the wizarding world we just use a coin-system, and galleons are the largest, most valuable coin. It is made out of gold and has a serial number imprinted along the rim. But let's explore our coin system further" she smiled, putting down her cup of tea, she was holding, back on her desk. "The break down of the coins is like this," she stated as she waved her wand at the chalkboard behind her. "Knuts are the lowest unit. It is made of bronze, and 29 knuts are worth one Sickle. Sickle is the next level up in the coins. It is made of silver and it takes 17 of them to equal 1 galleon. Galleons are made of gold and are the highest unit of currency. There are a total of 493 knuts to 1 galleon." When she finished writing she put down her pen and turned back to the class. "Feel free to copy this vital information now, it's a but mathematical, but we aren't going to go any deeper then that.

"In most muggle currency systems, there are coins and paper notes. The notes carry a larger value than the coins. And each note carries a serial number on it. In Britain, they also contain a picture of the Queen, aswell as the coins, because they see her as their sovereign and she deserves respect as the Queen. They also put a coat of arms on the other said, commonly referred to as 'tails', and the Queen's head is often referred to as 'heads', however you can't flip a note, so on one side there the Queen and the other an old exchequer" Professor Merrythought jumped down from the desk and started to walk around. "There is such a wide variety of muggle money systems. Most countries have their own variation." "What I would like you to do is to pick a country and research the currency used in that country. I would like for homework to have a short paper explaining the currency system and how it compares to the currency system of the Wizarding World. You may have twenty minutes of the class to work on this. I have a number of books to use for research on this shelf here." She placed her hand on the small bookcase that held a number of magazines and books. "If you need to work on this after the class period, please let me know which ones you are taking. Have fun."

When most people had completed the given task in that space of time, Aurora felt she had accomplished the first part of the lesson today, but now it was for the next. "Ok, well done on the first part of the lesson folks, but the next part is going to be a fun challenge, for the next four hours you are going to be living as a muggle and going to a muggle school!" She exclaimed. "So, everyone to the portkey, were going to great britain!" She smiled, they set off and landed in a medium-sized, British city. "Welcome to Peterborough!" Aurora smiled. "This is the one in Britiain, not the one in Canada or the States. So what's so special about Peterborough, I hear you ask, well one moment, and I will show you, they walked a little bit down the road and they appeared in front of a very large building. "A space station, miss?" One of the students inquired. "Nope, this is a school, may I introduce you to, the Thomas Deacon Academy, of course, there are students inside, and it's good to see that your all wearing muggle clothes, you must remember, that to them you are New Zealand exchange students, now you can go inside, and follow the man, and he will take you to each of your lessons.

Homework Assignment
Please do the task asked to complete during the first part of the lesson on money, and role play and take notes on that part to. On the last part as Living Like a Muggle, you can role play it briefly, but you must also write a review on it, and what parts you enjoyed, what parts you found odd etc. This will indeed get you lots of extra marks. There are a couple of lessons you can choose your character to go to, they are the following, and there is a maximum of two; Drama (projective speaking), Art (modern), Dance (street dancing), English (Romeo & Juliet research), Textiles (blanket stitching and Cross stitching and sewing on a button), Sport (badminton) and History (What caused World War II?).

Patricia was, to say the least, on a high this morning. Everything was back to normal: she had recovered well from her cold and got the all clear from one of the nurses; she had got back to her morning jog – which was harder than expected; she had talked to Andy after discovering she was a werewolf and had left on quite good terms and best of all Hufflepuff won their latest Quidditch Match against Slytherin.

The date of the wedding was slowly approaching and with each day came a new letter, with new news, today brought the news of a new guest, Headmistress Rambolt. Patricia couldn’t believe that not only was there going to be 2 Professors, possibly one of the librarians but her Headmistress as well. Patricia wanted so hard to enjoy the wedding so she was going to try and forget about that.

After her morning jog, she got and shower, made a pit stop at the Great Hall and was off to class. History of Magic. Patricia really enjoyed this class so far this year and the new Professor was a bit strange but she liked Professor Merrythought so it didn’t matter. She was sad to see Professor Weiss go, she was a very good Professor also and a great Head of House, but Professor Merrythought was now that also. Entering the classroom in her muggle attire she took her seat and put her pen and paper on the desk in front of her. Not too long after, class was starting so Patricia started to make out a few notes.

Patricia listened to Professor Merrythought as she wrote down some notes. When she heard Professor Merrythought give out some work Patricia put her notes aside and made a start on it. As Professor Merrythought already used Britain as an example Patricia couldn’t use her own currency system so decided to go with ‘The Euro’ as it was the only other system she ever used.

Ireland – The Euro

For this task the country which I am going to choose is Ireland, mainly because it is where I’m from. And in picking Ireland the type of currency which I will be looking at is ‘The Euro’ or as it is spelled in Irish, Eoró, but no matter what way you spell it the symbol remains the same, €.

Like all muggle currencies the Euro is very different to the currency system here in the Wizarding World. Where the lowest currency here in the Wizarding World is the knut, the lowest Euro is the cent. Like knuts these come in coin form, although there are six different cents all amounting to different values. The smallest is the 1 cent, which is a small round, bronze coin. Next there is the 2 cents, which is slightly bigger than the one cent, round and a light bronze colour. After that there is the 5 cent, which is bigger still, round and a light bronze colour. After that there is the 10 cent, which is once again bigger, round and a silver colour. 20 cent is next, bigger, round and silver. Finally there is the 50 cent which is bigger still, round and silver.

After these six coins come two more coins which would be the equivalent to the Wizarding World’s sickle. These are the Euro coins. There is the €1 coin, which is round, roughly the same size as a 20 cent coin, silver with a gold circle. The next one is the €2 coin which is the biggest of all coins and the opposite of the €1 coin, gold with a silver circle. Unlike the sickle you do not need a big amount of cents to make up one of these. There are numerous ways in which you can make up a Euro coin. E.g. To make up a €1 coin you can use one 50 cent, one 20 cent, one 10 cent, two 5 cent, two 2 cent and one 1 cent.

All circulating coins have a common side showing the denomination or value, and a map in the background. For the denominations except the 1-, 2- and 5-cent coins that map only showed the 15 member states which were members when the euro was introduced. Beginning in 2007 or 2008 (depending on the country) the old map was replaced by a map of Europe also showing countries outside the Union like Norway. The 1-, 2- and 5-cent coins, however, keep their old design, showing a geographical map of Europe with the 15 member states of 2002 raised somewhat above the rest of the map. The coins also have a national side showing an image specifically chosen by the country that issued the coin.

And now for the equivalent of the Wizarding World Galleon; the Euro Banknote. Unlike the Galleon, these do not come in coin form, as their name suggests they come in note form. Once again there are a number of notes all amounting to different values, seven to exact. The smallest is the €5 which has a grey colour to it. Next up is the €10 which has a red-ish colour to it. Next is the €20 which is a blue-ish colour. Next is the €50 which has a orange colour to it. Next is the €100 which has a green colour to it. Next is the €200 which has a gold colour to it. Next is the €500 which has a purple colour to it. Again, unlike the Galleon you do not need to use a big amount of coins to make up a Euro banknote. E.g. To make up a €100 banknote you can use, one €50 banknote, one €20 banknote, two €10 banknote and two €5 banknote.

The design for the euro banknotes have common designs on both sides. The design was created by the Austrian designer Robert Kalina. Notes are issued in €500, €200, €100, €50, €20, €10, €5. Each banknote has its own colour and is dedicated to an artistic period of European architecture. The front of the note features windows or gateways while the back has bridges. While the designs are supposed to be devoid of any identifiable characteristics, the initial designs by Robert Kalina were of specific bridges, including the Rialto and the Pont de Neuilly, and were subsequently rendered more generic; the final designs still bear very close similarities to their specific prototypes; thus they are not truly generic.

I know to people who are not used to this type of currency it seems very confusing what with all the different coins and notes with different values, but after a while is it very easy to use.
As Patricia proof read her assignment she heard Professor Merrythought continue with the lesson. As Patricia listened to the Professor explain what the rest of the class would consist of Patricia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Patricia was very excited to be going back to a muggle school, even if it was only for a few hours. Packing up her things she made her way to the portkey and in a few seconds she was standing outside in the relatively warm, for Britain, weather; it was a change from the cold Autumn back in New Zealand. Patricia stood examining the new surroundings as she listened to Professor Merrythought. Walking a little further Patricia saw a very familiar style building. Even though she had never seen the place before it was just like another muggle school really, nothing like Hogwarts New Zealand. Patricia laughed as she heard one of her classmates say it was a space station.

Patricia walked up the school grounds and entered the building after Professor Merrythought told them to go inside. It had been almost four years since Patricia had stepped foot in a muggle school but it was as if it was yesterday. Just like her old school back home it had that generic ‘school’ smell, the same dull coloured walls; it actually gave Patricia a kick to be back in familiar surroundings. Once the rest of the class were all assembled there was a man who gave them their choices. Patricia looked at the schedule and chose to go to Dance, she loved to dance and even though she had ever done line dancing she liked to diverse and did so quite often, hip-hop, waltz, jive, salsa, cha-cha were only a few that she had touched in recent years, so street dancing was a new field for her.

Making her way into the class she was given a spare tracksuit and pair of dance pumps, a lot like her own back home. Once that class was over Patricia met up with the rest of her class and the same man who took her to her last class. This time she had chosen sport. Badminton was one of her favourite sports and it had been a while since she had played it, plus none of the other classes interested her and she still had a few weeks of missed exercise to catch up on. Making her way into the changing rooms she changed into a spare pair of shorts and a t-shirt and trainers. Once this class was over Patricia said goodbye to the people that she had spent the last four hours with, a thank – you to the teachers she made her way back to Professor Merrythought and with-in seconds was back at Hogwarts. Getting her homework she made her way back to her dorm to make a start on it, she didn’t go for a jog that afternoon.

My day as a Muggle pupil – hasn’t changed in the last four years

So today we went on another trip back to the Muggle world, this time to a muggle school. Now I’ve been on a lot of trips in my three years here at Hogwarts but this was definitely in the top five. Being a Muggleborn I was brought up in the type of surroundings we were in today and it felt nice to go back to my roots, but it feels good to be back at Hogwarts.

Being the new student we spent the first few minutes of class doing a ‘getting to know’ session. Everyone introduced themselves to me and I did like-wise. I then told them about myself and Hogwarts. It was hard to answer some of their questions about the school that wouldn’t give away the fact that it’s a Wizarding school, but thankfully I’ve had some practice. They also found it strange that I go to school in New Zealand when I only live in Northern Ireland, but I’m rambling.

Within the four hours I spent there I took two of the classes that were on offer to us. The first class I took was Dance. Now dance is one of my great passions, I love it! And to be able to have a few hours today where I just did dancing it felt great. The style of dancing was street, which is completely new to me, but it was a great experience. After the ‘getting to know you’ session we had a 10 minute warm up then we learned a few simple steps. After a while we started to put the steps together into a routine then we did the dance to music. After that we grouped up and we had to make up our own routine with the steps we learned and some improvisation. Then near the end of class every group demonstrated their own dance.

The pupils and teachers were really nice and I got to know a few of the girls quite well as some of them were in my next class; Sport. I know the full four hours doing exercise, what’s wrong with me? But it actually wasn’t too bad. After the ‘getting to know you’ session we did some more warm ups. After that we had a theory on badminton, such as the history of it, techniques, the names of the equipment. After that we all paired up and had a rally between each other for a while. Then the pairs paired off and we played doubles for a short while. Then we had a tournament. Hehe I won! But I think they let me win, being the newbie, either way it was a great day.

P.S. Muggles find it funny when you call a teacher ‘Professor’ I did it a number of times.

That was AMAZING! I wasn't expecting that much from anyone, but this is phenomenal amount of work. Well done and fantastic effort!
