Belle was sitting behind her desk as the students arrived to class. She had set out on each desk the pads of paper, pens and pencils that the students would be using in her class. She also used one of the extra desks to add a few other items. There was a stapler, paperclips, binder clips and a variety of other muggle school supplies on display for the students to play with. She knew that some had never had any interaction with these supplies at all, so it would be interesting to see their reactions. In the corner of the room, Belle had conjured up a high school locker. She waited until the students were seated and then rose to begin class.

“Welcome back. Today we are going to take a look at muggle school life. I have taught in a muggle school and it is very different than here at Hogwarts. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be different, other than the lack of magic part?”

Belle listened to the responses. “Those are all good ideas. The biggest difference is that the majority of muggle schools are not ones where the students live at. Schools will vary by country, but as an example, we will look at those in the United States. Students do not live at school, but instead return home each night. During the school day, books and personal items are kept in a locker.” Belle walked over to the locker in the corner and opened it. There were coat hooks on each side, as well as a shelf at the top and at the bottom. The door was decorated with pictures of herself and some of her students in San Francisco. “This is where students will hang their coats and bags. They keep books, notebooks and things on shelves. Depending upon the school regulations, they either will take all of their books with them to their classes or will return to the locker to exchange books between classes.” She gestured to the inside of the door. “Many students will decorate the door with pictures of friends, family or celebrities. I have decorated this with some pictures that I have taken during my last teaching position.”

She walked back to the desk with school supplies on it. “These are some of the typical supplies that muggle students use. I have provided you all with your pens, pencils and paper. Students also use folders or binders to keep their papers in. I will allow you to look at them and choose which one you would prefer to use for your own papers.” Belle motioned to the individual items as she spoke about them. “This is a stapler. It is used for binding multiple pieces of paper together.” She demonstrated stapling two pieces of paper. “Paper clips are also used to secure papers together, but this is a much more temporary than a staple is.”

Belle walked over and sat on the front of her desk. “I will allow you some time at the end of the class to examine the supplies on the desk as well as the locker. I want to explain a typical course of study in muggle schools. Again, I am using the United States as an example since that is where I taught. Things may be slightly different in other countries.”

“There are three types of schools. Elementary is for the youngest students and has grades Kindergarten through 5th or 6th. Kindergarten is for students that are just entering school, around 5 years old. Most students your age are in the 8th grade, which would be in Middle School or Junior High. Middle School is grades 6, 7 and 8 and equivalent of the first 3 years here. Junior High is grades 7 and 8 or 7, 8, and 9. There are many variances among school districts in the middle grades. High School or Senior High finishes off the grades. Students are typically around 14 to 18 years of age. Muggle children are not considered adults until the age of 18 and do not graduate until that age.”

“The courses in a traditional Muggle school are different than in a magical community school. Students take core courses in mathematics, language arts, reading, science and history. There are other electives such as computers, home economics, industrial technologies, foreign languages, and physical education.” Belle looked up at the clock on the wall, realizing she was running low on time.

“What I would like you to do for your assignment is look through the textbooks I have on my shelf over here.” She stood up and walked over to the large bookshelf in the room. “Pick one of the muggle courses and write me a few paragraphs on your impressions of the coursework included and compare this course to a course you have taken here at Hogwarts. And easy example would be to compare Math with Arithmancy, or History with History of Magic. I also would like a few sentances on your impression of the muggle school supplies and whether you are choosing to use a binder or folder for your work. Of course, I do expect that you will use your muggle school supplies.”

“One last thing before I let you get to work. For the next few weeks, I would like you to come to class dressed like muggles. No uniforms or school robes. You may bring them to change into if you have a class after this that you need to attend, but I would like to see how you picture muggle dress. I do know some of you have a lot of experience with this, but this is important. Many members of the magical community have no idea how to blend in. One goal of this course is to make sure that you not only understand muggles are people too, but to be able to blend into their society as you would need to in the future.”

“Okay, go ahead and get to work. You may borrow the texts if you would like, just let me know you are taking one.”

Homework:

RP your impressions of muggle school supplies and whether you are choosing to use a binder or a folder. You will be ‘provided’ the item in your next class.

Also do the assignment as stated in the lesson. Just a paragraph or two will suffice. The textbooks provided are of any subject you could think of. Be creative! :-D

History of Magic Professor: Yrs 1 -4 | Former Puff & Head Girl: Class of 2027 | Ex-St Mungo's Healer

Patricia was happy that she had gone one week so far and had kept up her promise of excercising, and even better on the odd morning she had company on her jog. The Hufflepuff girl felt great, like nothing could bring her down. Her grades were still as good as ever, she was strengtening some friendships and making new ones, what could be go wrong? The only thing she could think about was her last trip to the dungeons where she found out about the resident werewolves, she had been so scared when she found out but was glad of Andrew's help and reassurance. She still hated the dungeons though.

After she returned from her jog she got showered and dressed, ready for another day. In the Great Hall the usual din of people talking amongst themselves had gone back to normal and the excitement of the latest instalment of the Gossip Magazine had died down quick enough. She till wasn't sure if she wanted to believe that Isabella was behind the whole thing, she knew Bella liked Gossip, but to go spreading it around like that and about herself, it was doubtful, but this teenager didn't care, nothing was said about her but the bits about her friends ticked her off slightly.

After finishing her breakfast she made her way to her first class, Muggle Studies. She enjoyed this class last week but still felt a bit bad that she was taking and had no real reason too as she knew as se needed about Muggles and their lifestyle. Shrugging the idea away she made her way up to the firt floor corridor and entered the room. After said good morning to Professor Weiss she made her way to her seat and saw her pen and notepad on her table in front of her, a smile on her face, she enjoyed using them far more than quills and parchement.

As Patricia waited for the class to start she looked around the classroom noticing a few new items. She recognised them all of course, she wondered how some of her classmates would react to something like a stapler. She laughed quietly to herself at the thought of it. After a few minutes the rest of the class arrived s Patricia turned her attention to Professor Weiss. A few minutes in Professor Weiss asked a question, Patricia raised her hand and when called upon answered, "Uniform." she said simply, then she went on to explain her answer, "Some schools don't have a uniform so you can wear whatever you want. Although some do have uniforms, but instead of robes they would wear blazers." she said, remembering her old school uniform, she wasn't particularly a fan of it.

Patricia listened to Professor Weiss talk about the Muggle schooling system. Although she knew nothing about the American school system so she paid attention to it moreso than any othe parts of the lecture. It had never occured to Patricia much before but she realised, as Professor Weiss talked about it, how much some of the subjects they learned back home were familiar to the ones they were taught here. At the end of the lecture Patricia jotted down her homework. As she started to pack up she heard Professor Weiss said they were to wear Muggle clothes for the next few weeks of class. Patricia beamed at this, she didn't mind her uniform but se much rather prefered to be in her normal clothes. Saying godbye to Professor Weiss Patricia left the class and decided to go to the same spot she did last week to do her homework, it was rather peaceful. Once she had her homework done she left it in with Professor Weiss on her way to lunch.

Muggle Studies Lesson 2

Compare and Contrast.
Flying (Quidditch) Vs Physical Education - P.E. (Basketball)

The two subjects which I have had decided to compare are flying, which we took in our first ever semester here at Hogwarts, and what I believe to be the Muggle counterpart, Physical Education, usually shortened down to P.E.

I chose these two classes as Flying lesson was is the only form of excercise offered on the curriculum here at Hogwarts. Although when you dig deeper and take different aspects of each subject you can see even more similarities. For example, in Flying lesson, even though we didn't play it, we got a taster of Quidditch and in PE you get to play a game called Basketball, which I'm sure you're aware of Professor as I believe it is a very popular sport in America.

Anyway they are a number of simiarities these games e.g. they both attempt to get a ball inside a hoop; they have a number of people who try to pass the ball the other members of their team; their is a goal keeper of sorts; and the other team alwas trys to intercead the opposing team passing the ball to each other. Some of the differences include: no brooms; no bludgers; no snitch; there are more players on basketball team.
Oh and I would like the binder please.

After ignoring the bright sunlight streaming through her windows for a good quarter of an hour, Ella realized that if she didn't get up and ready quickly, she would end up not only late for class, but she would miss it entirely. Quickly jumping up and throwing her Hogwart's robe over her pyjamas and brushing through a few knots in her hair, Ella ran to her Muggle Studies classroom. At least this class isn't going to cause me too much trouble, considering my family are muggles and fairly easy to understand. She took a seat in the front of the classroom and apologetically shrugged at Professor Weiss and the other students, hoping they weren't too annoyed.

Ella listened to Professor Weiss lecture about muggle schools, and deep down Ella did miss attending a muggle school at times. The first difference Ella thought of when comparing muggle school to magical school was the heavy usage of wands, but she didn't speak up about it. When the lecture was finished, Ella leafed through a few books to decide which two subjects she would compare. Ah, why not art and flying? Should be an interesting yet difficult comparison!

Before exiting the classroom, Ella walked up to Professor Weiss's locker and looked at the pictures inside. She had never been to or seen an American muggle school, and it looked like the Professor and her students had quite a bit of fun there.

Muggle Studies Lesson 2

Comparing Fine Art in Muggle School to Quidditch at Hogwarts

I know it may seem absurd to compare two subjects that seem so strikingly opposite as quidditch and art, but they do have some similarities. First of all, both of these subjects are considered easy, or, grade enhancers, etc. However, to truly master art or quidditch, one has to be very dedicated. To be a great artist, a muggle or wizard must spend countless hours in the studio (or anywhere) mastering their craft. To be a great quidditch player, the wizard or witch must spend many hours practicing, both alone and with his/her team members.

I would like to use a binder and paper in class, thank you!

Fab work, very interesting homework comparison and the role play was also captivating.
