Professor Weiss was seated on her desk, playing with an old muggle soda bottle when the students entered.

"Welcome, welcome. Don't put your things down. Come on up here please. We don't have much time." As everyone gathered around her, she explained. "We are continuing our study on muggle communication systems, but to do so, we are taking a field trip to my apartment. There we can actually experience the various communication systems we are talking about. "

The bottle started to glow. "Time to go. Get a finger on here!" She held the bottle out, preparing herself for the feeling of being yanked through space by her belly button.

Shortly after, they landed in her living room. She set the bottle down on the fireplace mantle to allow them to have a return passage. "As you can see, the place has not changed too much, but I have borrowed a few items from my family." She led the way to the dining table. "I have borrowed a few phones and computers from my family so that you may play with them and get the feel for this type of communication."

Professor Weiss opened up the laptop computer on the table and began to power it up. "This is what is called a computer. A laptop or notebook computer to be specific." She walked over to another computer on a desk next to the wall and switched that on as well. "This is also a computer, but this is a desktop version. They are named for their size and portability. The laptop is able to be taken outside as well as to school or anywhere else. The computer is a way to access information, as well as to communicate with others." She sat down and began to mess with the mouse next to the monitor. "This is the mouse. The only reason I can think of that it is named that is because of its shape and the cord. Makes it look kinda like a mouse." She shrugged her shoulders and smiled at the students.

"Now on a computer, there are a variety of ways to communicate. First is email. This is a way to send letters that you type into the machine via the keyboard. Notice there are all the letters and numbers and many symbols on it." She motioned and showed off the keys. Then she started clicking around on the screen. "This is what an email looks like." A letter popped up on the screen. "This is one that was sent by my mother as a sample for you to look at."

She made a few more motions and a list showed up. "This is a second way to communicate through a computer. This is an instant messenger. I will set this up so you may chat back an forth between the computers. It is a lot faster than email because the message is able to be read without having to open the letter." She quickly moved to the other computer, made a few motions and then typed rapidly. "Watch the screen." She hit a few more keys and up on the desktop popped:

Quote:

Hi everyone! This is what an instant message looks like.

She then walked over to the table again, picking up the phones on the table. "These are all cellular phones. There is more than enough for each of us to use one for a while. I know some of you have never spoken on a phone before, and you will be able to experience that. There is also a function on the phone that allows you to type messages to each other. This is called text messaging."

Professor Weiss set the phones down, and decided the best way to learn was to do. "Okay, I am going to let you play with these ways of communicating. I will be right here to help you out. The computers can message each other, and the numbers are here to message between phones. I know some of you have experience with this type of equipment, so please feel free to help out those who have not. Alright, feel free to play!" she said with a smile.

Andy smiled at the professor as she entered the class, in another few days she would be 15 and was all excited. She was about to take her normal seat when the professor told them to go to her desk and to touch a bottle as they were going to her apartment.
"Great Miss" she gushed, having fallen in love with the view of San Francisco from the professors apartment the year before. The portal key transferred them all safely to their destination where they were then told about the various computers, phones and mobiles that were waiting for them to use. Andy booted up one of the laptops immediately and called up the email account her uncle Marcus had set up for her before she left for New Zealand, not believing a single word about no electrical appliances. He'd be thrilled when they got her e-mail.

Hi Everyone,
OMG I know my very first email since I left for Hogwarts. Thanks Uncle Marcus, you were right you simply never know when you'll need an account. Everything is great here, it was so good to see you all this summer. France was brilliant but can't really tell all here, will write to you as normal for all of that. We're in the middle of muggle studies and have come to the professors apartment in San Francisco to use computers and phones. Great school or what? Well got to go.
My love to all of you.
Romy ;)

When she had sent off her email she walked over to the balcony she had stood at before and picking up a mobile phone decided to send a text message to the phone of her cousin Agnes.

When she put the phone away she saw one or two of the others having difficulty with theirs and the professor helping and was amazed how very different the worlds of magic and muggle really were. Soon the class were asked to touch the portal key to return them to the school. Andy thanked the professor when they were finally dismissed and headed back to the Gryffindor house.
