Professor Weiss was seated on her desk, playing with an old muggle soda bottle when the students entered. "Welcome, welcome. Don't put your things down. Come on up here please. We don't have much time." As everyone gathered around her, she explained. "We are continuing our study on muggle communication systems, but to do so, we are taking a field trip to my apartment. There we can actually experience the various communication systems we are talking about. " The bottle started to glow. "Time to go. Get a finger on here!" She held the bottle out, preparing herself for the feeling of being yanked through space by her belly button. Shortly after, they landed in her living room. She set the bottle down on the fireplace mantle to allow them to have a return passage. "As you can see, the place has not changed too much, but I have borrowed a few items from my family." She led the way to the dining table. "I have borrowed a few phones and computers from my family so that you may play with them and get the feel for this type of communication." Professor Weiss opened up the laptop computer on the table and began to power it up. "This is what is called a computer. A laptop or notebook computer to be specific." She walked over to another computer on a desk next to the wall and switched that on as well. "This is also a computer, but this is a desktop version. They are named for their size and portability. The laptop is able to be taken outside as well as to school or anywhere else. The computer is a way to access information, as well as to communicate with others." She sat down and began to mess with the mouse next to the monitor. "This is the mouse. The only reason I can think of that it is named that is because of its shape and the cord. Makes it look kinda like a mouse." She shrugged her shoulders and smiled at the students. "Now on a computer, there are a variety of ways to communicate. First is email. This is a way to send letters that you type into the machine via the keyboard. Notice there are all the letters and numbers and many symbols on it." She motioned and showed off the keys. Then she started clicking around on the screen. "This is what an email looks like." A letter popped up on the screen. "This is one that was sent by my mother as a sample for you to look at." She made a few more motions and a list showed up. "This is a second way to communicate through a computer. This is an instant messenger. I will set this up so you may chat back an forth between the computers. It is a lot faster than email because the message is able to be read without having to open the letter." She quickly moved to the other computer, made a few motions and then typed rapidly. "Watch the screen." She hit a few more keys and up on the desktop popped:
She then walked over to the table again, picking up the phones on the table. "These are all cellular phones. There is more than enough for each of us to use one for a while. I know some of you have never spoken on a phone before, and you will be able to experience that. There is also a function on the phone that allows you to type messages to each other. This is called text messaging." Professor Weiss set the phones down, and decided the best way to learn was to do. "Okay, I am going to let you play with these ways of communicating. I will be right here to help you out. The computers can message each other, and the numbers are here to message between phones. I know some of you have experience with this type of equipment, so please feel free to help out those who have not. Alright, feel free to play!" she said with a smile. Your assignment this week is to play with the provided items. Feel free to ask for assistance if you need any, or call home if you are muggleborn. If you wish, I can edit your post with any answers or assistance needed. Have fun! |

Njord looked around the room and the Professor was right, it hadn't changed much from the last time they had been there. Once she had shown them the items she called computers Njord went with another student to a computer and poked what was called a keyboard with his finger. Suddenly the screen came to life with what looked like a white sheet of paper. The Professor told them it was a writing program and showed them what to do by typing on the screen. Njord found the letters to his name on the keys.
He then began to fool around with some other buttons and 'formatting' as the Professor told them what certain things did.
"I think I prefer the quill and parchment." he said to his buddy. Next they picked up a cell phone and Njord began pushing some buttons. A strange ringing sound came from ear end. "Hello." came a voice from the ear end. Njord looked at it and said. "Hello." "Yes, who is this." came the voice again. "Njord." the boy said chuckling. "This is too funny." he said to his friend. "Who is this, why are you calling?" came the voice again, this time it sounded angry. "I don't know." Njord said practically falling over laughing. Click. A look of confusion came over Njord's face and put the cellphone. It was now time to go back to the school and they all gathered together to place their hands on the portkey to go home. |

Kat had seen tons of muggle things before, but the professors apartment was absolutely fascinating. She'd never seen a computer up close before and started clicking around on the keys, hoping that she wouldn't break anything. She overheard Njord playing around on the phone and just chuckled to herself. Boys! Sheesh! she thought as she grabbed the now vacant phone and dialed her aunt and uncles house. Kat figured she might as well take this opportunity to let her muggle family know that Lola was doing just fine at school, just in case her mother hadn't been getting the messages along to them in a timely fashion. The answering machine picked up and she said, "Hey guys! It's Kat! Just thought I'd let you know that Lola is doing fine at school. She misses you both and so do I! We'll see you over Christmas holidays! Bye!" It probably sounded a little silly, but at least now they would know. The day ended at Professor Weiss' apartment and the were transported back to school. |

Kailey walked into class and saw an old bottle sitting on the desk. A smile made it's way onto her face as she realized that it was a portkey, unless the lesson was about muggle drinks. She quickly made her way to her seat next to Njord and sat down waiting to see that the lesson would bring, it was fun to get back in touch with her mainly muggle roots. This class had proven to be the perfect oppurtounity to do so just as she had suspected. She left her things behind as Professor Weiss had said to and walked up to the front of the room with the rest of the class and got a light grip of the bottle between two fingers around the neck of it as she prepared herself for the usual sensation of travelling around by portkey. Sure enough she soon felt the sensation of being pulled back by her belly button and found herself in a heap on Professor Weiss's floor. Dusting herself off she looked around at all of the electronics in the room. She could probably count all of the computers, cell phones, and regular phones if she wanted to but she didn't really want to so she decided there would definitely be enough for everyone. She knew she would probably monopolize one of the computers the whole thime she was here. By the time she was pulled out of her thoughts she realized students were roaming around looking at everything and she quickly made her way to a desktop set up in the corner of the room. The first thing she checked was the myspace she had made over the summer. She had realized at the time that it kind of a stupid idea but all of her friends had added her right away regardless. After approving all of the comments and repsonding to all of the messages that had piled up over the months she logged into her yahoo. To her surpise alot of people were online, she then reminded herself that she was in the US now and that the time change wasn't so drastic.
A message popped up on the screen, she should have expected this. She obviously never had the oppurtounity to get online and her friends had vowed to try to stay in touch with her, and so they did as much as they could.
and within the minute a invite box popped up inviting her to join the group chat. Figuring that this would be easier than trying to talk to them all induvidually she agreed. Wondering just who all exactly was in there. Her eyes nearly bugged out of their sockets when she saw that when Lyndsey had said the gang she meant all of them.
A chat with all Ten of us... Wow that should be interesting... Kailey thought, the ten of them had rebanded over the summer and nothing could tear that bond now, not even her being away most of the time. This was proven as the frantic greetings and welcome backs began before the topic eventually barreled on to something completely diferent as usual.
It was around this time that Kailey looked at her watch and realized she only had about two minutes left. She quickly turned bak to the screen,
Just then another box quickly popped up.
She seemed content with this answer as the thing alerted she had closed the box. She looked around and noticed aside from one person logging off another computer the whole class was waiting on her.
Kailey quickly closed out of everything and shut down the computer to rejoin her boyfriend Njord who was standing in the group. She wondered what he had done with the class period. Kailey knew for a fact that she had certainly put hers to good use. Not exactly the most productive class of her life but she had enjoyed herself nonetheless. When they got back to the school Kailey bid Njord a goodbye and went to hang out with some friends there at Hogwarts so she wouldn;t start missing her muggle friends too much. She was closer to her hogwarts friends but when she wanted a good ol random yahoo chat her muggle friends were the ones to turn to. |
