Professor Weiss was sitting on her desk, waiting for the students to arrive. There were a number of muggle communication devices about the room. Once the students were in their seats, she jumped down and welcomed them.

"Good Tuesday to you all. Today we are going to begin our study on muggle communications, which is our theme for the year. We are going to start by focusing on voice communications."

"Muggles use what is called a telephone to communicate from one house to another, or phones for short. The phone was invented by a man named Alexander Graham Bell. Each person with a phone is assigned a number that allows another phone owner to contact them by punching the number in to the keypad like this." Professor Weiss picked up a cordless phone from a desk next to her and showed the keypad. "The numbers that make up the numbers are from 0 to 9 and are punched in a specific order to get to a specific person."

"There are a number of different styles of phones available. When you are in a muggle home, you may see any number of kinds around. I have a few here, and you may feel free to check them out and play with them after a bit."

"There is also what is called a cellular phone. These are phones that are able to be taken with the person. The number when dialed will make the phone on the person ring."

"Okay, I am going to give you time to play with some of the phones around, and feel free to ask me any questions you may have about them. Your homework is on the board."

RP the lesson and for homework please write a paragraph or two on Alexander Graham Bell.

Njord walked into class and sat closer to the front of the class then he usually did. He was feeling alot better about this year then he did last week. Njord quickly pulled out his parchment and quill and looked up at the Professor ready to take notes. On her desk were some strange looking metal and plastic items. He leaned closer to get a better look.

As the Professor began her lesson he quickly took notes and watched her pick up each hand held contraptions. That's kind of cool. he thought. No more paper and owl poop. You could talk to someone instantly instead of waiting for a reply...Cool.

Njord finished taking his notes scribbled down his homework and left the class to work on it before his next class.

Muggle Studies Lesson two

Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland in 1847. Along with his father and brother, the Bell men did extensive work on sound and speech, as AG Bell's mother and wife were deaf. AG Bell lost his two bothers to illness and in an effort to not follow those lines, the Bell family packed up and moved to Canada. AG Bell soon recovered and his father and him continued to work on their Visible Speech System. This work led him to work with deaf and mute schools in Canada and then to Boston in the United States where he was granted a patent for the first telephone. There is controversy over who had the first patent, either AG Bell or Elisha Gray and the patent controversy still continues.

Bell offered to sell the patent to Western Union, a large telegraph company for $100,000 but the bosses at WU just laughed at the idea of the telephone. Two years later they said $25 million for the patent would be a bargain. The patent was no longer for sale and the Bell Telephone Company was created.

By 1886 150,000 people in the United States owned telephones. In 1876 the telephone calls spanned 2 miles. In 1915 the telephone calls spanned 3400 miles across the country.

AG Bell spent his life creating many other things but will forever be known as the father of the telephone. He died quietly at the age of 75 in 1922 and as a sign of repect, all telephones remained silent for 1 minute.

Njord quickly rolled up his parchment and stuffed it into his bag to hand in next time and quickly headed out to meet Kailey at the North Tower.
