Sixth Years: Lesson 2

Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Styx walked into the class to see that there was no one was here, and he leaned against the desk with his arms crossed over his chest, his gloves shining against the dim candlelight the room had. He preferred the room to have a dark tint to it, with all the windows blocked by the shades to give the room less light than the professor wanted. That is the way he preferred it and it was not going to change. Professor Styx glanced up to see some sixth years entering the classroom to start the lesson. Perhaps they were excited over learning the non-verbal magic however they would have to wait a bit before they could even hope to do that. This lesson it was going to be brief, as he did not want to keep them longer than it was necessary.

Once everyone was seated and Professor Styx knew that everyone had arrived that was going to come in. The doors shut that echoed across the silent classroom, and Professor Styx started the lesson, "Today we are going to be doing the Defensive spell Protego Horribilis. Now this particular spell uses the defensive incantation that you learned back in first year, the difference now is that 'horribilis' or terrifying is attached. Making this particular protection extremely effective against dark magic. Protego would not be able to block some of the dark spells, which is why you need to master Protego Horribilis." He paused for a moment before he looked over the class to see who was paying attention and who was not. "Pair off and practice this spell. You should know what to do." After they had done that, he walked around to watch over them, and once class was over, he soon dismissed them after class had ended.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson.

Flavio arrived to the dimly lit defence against the dark arts classroom to find professor Styx standing there. He wordlessly nodded to the professor in acknowledgement before choosing his usual seat in the front row and placing down his belongings. He brought with him some notes he made while studying, a blank piece of parchment for writing new notes, his self inking quill, and last but not least his book confronting the faceless in case he needed to look something up during the lesson. It might have seemed like too many things to carry to one class but Flavio wanted to make sure he was as prepared as possible because he knew defence against the dark arts was one of his most important subjects. He needed to know as much about defending himself from dark magic as possible and potentially dark magic itself if he wanted to reassure himself he had the knowledge to protect himself properly. It would be silly of him to not bring everything he needed as well as anything he could need to a lesson if it would help him learn.

Turning his attention from his desk and to professor Styx, Flavio jumped a little when the door slammed shut but didn't let that distract him from listening to the professor afterwards. The man said the lesson was about a defensive spell known as protego horribilis, and Flavio in turn noted the spell down as the header on his parchment. The next information that the spell was similar to protego from his first year although with the addition of horribilis to help protect against darker spells was interesting. It made sense obviously because the class was at a higher academic level than the first years and Flavio did his best to note each of the professor's word's down so he could remember everything. Flavio looked up from his note taking when the professor asked the class to pair up and practice the spell, and he quickly paired with the person sitting next to him and practiced for the remainder of the lesson. It took a few tries but Flavio managed to cast the spell properly eventually and he left the room feeling accomplished. He planned to study and practice before his next defence against the dark arts lesson and couldn't wait to see what he would be learning next.

After last week's lesson, a lot of Ainsley's apprehension about Defense Against the Dark Arts had lifted. Although the subject was difficult, and scary to think about, the prospect of more work on non-verbal spellcasting was thrilling. If Professor Styx hadn't been so scary, Ainsley would have considered asking him more about other forms of magic, such as wandless. That was clearly off the table though, so Ainsley simply listened as the professor began the lesson, taking careful notes as he spoke. A stronger form of shielding sounded like an excellent thing to know, and she really wanted to get this right. After listening to the lecture and making sure she had spelled the spell correctly, Ainsley paired up with Amber and spent the rest of the lesson practicing, focusing hard on her casting to mak sure she could perform the spell right every time. By the end of class Ainsley was confident with the spell, and as she packed her things up to head out she was already excited for what they were going to be learning next week.

Noemie knew that she could use the valentines day dance and the roses before to help declare feelings for Asmodeus, and they would spend the time together, she knew it. The ravenclaw had never been so certain about something, and unlike with her classes, she knew the result would be exactly what she wanted. It wasn’t however the only thing she had to think about that week, she had a little more. The quidditch game at the end of the week, after the valentines event was important, if they won that they won the cup and that was the most important thing. The ravenclaw was getting herself ready for the day. She was looking forward to what joys the week would bring for her. She had to focus on her classes yes, but she had so much else that she would be able to do. The teen was smiling and getting herself together for the day. She had gone for an early morning run, and after it, got ready with a small smile on her face and a skip in her step. It was perhaps the first time in a long while that Noemie’s mornings weren’t filled with worrying about how she would do in the exams and what that would mean for the future, if she kept her grades at what they were, she’d be able to continue all her classes and in the next year she could work even harder. With that she ensured she had everything before walking out the room.

Noemie walked into the the defence against the dark arts classroom and took her usual seat in the room. Her gaze shifted towards the front of the room as the professor was beginning his lecture. She hoped to get a good enough grade in this class this year to be able to progress further and hope to actually get to sit the NEWT. She took out her books and her wand and placed both upon the table in front of her, but it was pointless, they were casting spells that day. She took her wand and partnered up with someone else in the class. The protego spell would be good if she ended up in a job where it might require it like an auror or a dueller or maybe someone who deal with dangerous animals would use it. She let her partner go first in casting the spell, and it was pretty easy for her. The casting of stupefy was something that given the years that they’d been doing the spell was almost second nature to her, she was fairly certain she could do it without even saying the words. However she did know that they weren’t yet at that point in the class. Eventually it was her turn to cast the protego spell, and it took her a few times before she felt confident that she had it, and it certainly felt a little weak, but she just needed more practice. The lesson was wrapped up and she packed up the things she’d placed on her desk at the beginning and left the room.

Rory didn’t have a girlfriend currently and the girl he was maybe admittedly a little interested in didn’t want anything to do with him at all. He couldn’t help but feel a little lost about how to deal with this week, he usually sent roses to the girls he was flirting with, but didn’t want to do that. Flirting was usually fun but it had lost its flavour in the boy’s mouth, he flirted with people he knew wouldn’t ever want him back. He flirted with people he was sure didn’t like him in the slightest, well, who wouldn’t like him in the way that it would ever lead to anything, but it seemed pretty pointless to even do that. He would probably still send a couple but maybe they could be less flirty, and maybe he should send an apology one to Anabelle, maybe. He would see if he was up to it. It would depend, but he would certainly be going to the valentines event alone. But there were bigger things to focus on, the quidditch game for one and technically he had classes, but they were dull and he was going to them and thinking about quidditch. He made sure that he had both his quidditch and school stuff each day that week. He got the last bits and pieces together and went to the first class of the day.

Rory walked into the defence against the dark art class, taking his usual spot within the room. He pulled out his books and notes and placed them upon the table. He leaned back in his seat and glanced towards the front of the classroom where the professor was stood in his usual manner. He could wait until he graduated and no longer had to see this man’s face in the slightest. He leaned forward a little as the man got started upon the lesson, since they did need to pay attention in his class, well, Rory needed to pay attention in his class. He could always feel as though the man was watching him, even when it was evident that he was not in fact doing so. He listened to the very brief lecture about the spell and then took his wand. They were allowed to just get started, so he did. He paired up with one of the other people in the class, and of course went first in casting the spell they’d just been told about. He took a few tries to get it but eventually was managing just fine. With that he did the normal spells so his partner would get to try the protego spell. It was an easy enough thing, and when they had it, the class was being wrapped up so he was able to pack up and leave.

Amber was excited for the Valentine's dance at the end of the week, but she knew she couldn't let that distract her from her workload in her classes. She wanted to do well in her classes so she could enjoy the dance without any worries. Though she did find herself daydreaming about dancing with her girlfriend in a few of her lessons. But she couldn't help feeling like it was still very exciting to attend an event with Ainsley. It was sad to think they would only go to two dances after this. The girl made her way into the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, a little nervous to see what they would be covering today

Professor Styx was leaning against his desk, just watching them in silence. Even as a sixth year, the professor gave her chills. She glanced at Ainsley by her side, wondering if her friend was also intimidated by the professor. Amber was excited to try nonverbal spells, but was also sure this would be a very difficult thing to master. She wished they were learning it in Charms instead, as Professor Haden seemed more likely to forgive mistakes. Amber took notes as the professor started to talk, writing down the information about the Protego Horribilis spell. Honestly, she thought the name didn't promise much good. It was a spell that worked well against dark spells, which was good to know. She paired off with Ainsley to practice the spell, working hard to master it as she was certain this was a very important spell to know. She didn't expect to have many dark spells cast against her in the future, but being prepared and safe was never a bad thing. Once the lesson was over and they had practiced a lot, Amber packed her things and left the classroom with Ainsley by her side.
