As his students sat down, Professor Summers wordlessly withdrew a large box from under the desk. After removing on top, and on closer inspection, it was revealed to actually be a chess set. The marble pieces stood still, staring blankly out at the class. "Hey guys, so I have something a little more enjoyable for our last lesson. Who here has played wizard chess?" Summers questioned. Unsurprisingly, only a few hands were raised. It wasn't like most twelve year olds were too enthusiastic about chess. "Before those chess pieces have minds of their own, they are normal, boring, chess pieces that rather resemble the type used by most muggles." "The pieces are transfigured, by a special team of wizarding toy makers, to come to life. Each set generally has its own distinct personality, depending on the preference of the witch or wizard who brought them to life. This type of transfiguration falls under the Inanimate to Animate type of spell." "This," Aeon pointed at the chess set, "is a muggle chess set. The pieces remain stationary, having no animation or personality of their own, until we put some life in them." Taking out his wand, Summers waved the mahogany wood toward a marble piece at random. "Animare!" He incanted, and at once the piece's facial features changed. Its mouth melted into gentle smile, scowl, and even goofy jester grin, churning through an assortment of emotions. Next its attire changed, becoming more independent and free flowing. The piece remained in the clothing that had been carved onto it, but it seemed to come to life, separating from its body somewhat to resemble a more living appearance. A lone pawn now stood quivering nervously on the spot, barely holding on to his small dagger. Professor Summers' eyes moved from the pawn to the class with a smile. "As you can see, the incantation 'Animare' brings things to life. Naturally, other inanimate objects are brought to life to amuse children. Chocolate frogs are an excellent example that comes to mind. After the chocolate is mixed and set, candy makers use a sort of mild spell form of the spell on it so as to not disturb the flavor. The result is that they really only get one good jump before --" "Oh my, oh dear, excuse me. I am not d-doing battle with these giants, am I? I do not think I am very well equipped for th-this type of combat, you see-" The nervous pawn interrupted, eyes wide and staring at the rows of children. Professor Summers's made to wave his wand at the pawn before it could interrupt his class further, returning it to its solid state. "Anyway, the wand movement," He continued. "You should tap the object that you are going to animate once squarely in it's center and then aim the wand at the object, speaking aloud the incantation. With the proper visualization and concentration, the correct wand movement, and a firmly spoken incantation, you should find yourself able to cast most inanimate to animate spells. Now one by one come to the front, pick a chess piece, and try to bring it to life in front of the class. Starting with you." Aeon pointed at a student sitting on the first bench of the first row.Transfiguration,2,6 |

The final week of classes was here, and Diana was glad. With everything going on in her life, it was hard to focus on school. The elections seemed to continue forever, but hardly anyone seemed to realize she was the daughter of one of the candidates. And even if she managed to drop it casually into a conversation or two, it hardly seemed noteworthy. It was infuriating. The entire Sapphire situation was as well, so Diana was glad she had something else to focus on: the yule ball. She couldn't believe she had an actual date to the dance, and she was very excited about that day. Edmund would probably look decent in a suit, and hopefully he would be able to dance at least a little. Diana hardly focused on any of her classes in the last week, and found it difficult to listen to Professor Summers today. The professor told them something about chess. Yawn. She tried her best to listen but couldn't help herself from daydreaming a little bit. It wasn't until the professor showed them a spell that she realized they had to actually do the spell today. She had been under the impression that this lesson was a theoretical one. A little flustered, she sat up straighter and listened to the rest of the lecture. At least the wand movement was easy. But then they had to do the spell in front of the entire class, at the front. Diana bit her lip and paid close attention to a few of the other students as they took their turns first. She was very glad she didn't sit in the front row. When it was her turn, she pretended to be confident as she walked over to the chess piece. She tapped it squarely in it's center as the professor had said. "Animare." She said. It didn't work, and she blushed a little. Squaring her shoulders, she tried again. And again. By the fourth attempt, it finally worked. The chess piece came to life. Diana sighed in relief and quickly found her way back to her seat. When the lesson was over she was one of the first to leave the classroom, glad to get out of there. |

Sapphire knew by now that Professor Summers was never predictable. She sat in the front, prepared for anything. She listened intently to the lesson, smiling a bit to herself. She raised her hand when asked who had played chess. It had been quite the fight between her and Onyx. She reached over and squeezed his hand at the thought of it. She hated fighting with him. She smiled a bit wider when the Professor moved to the spellwork. She knew Mervyn had been showing off when he had shown her this spell, but she had been impressed all the same. With his help, she had managed to animate all of Onyx's chess pieces before she had given the set to him. So when the Professor called her up first, she wasn't nervous. Sapphire followed the Professor's instructions exactly, and a small smile came over her face when the knight she'd chosen came to life. He was a sassy little guy that almost immediately began flirting with her. She grinned and went back to her seat. |

Mazikeen knew that the semesters passed too quickly, certainly they felt like they’d pass too quickly. She was pleased though that this semester was coming to an end, after all, she had been working hard and realised mostly that she had set aside too much time to study, that she wasn’t being as productive as she believe. It was finding a balance, and she was struggling to find it so far, but others had managed it, she could see it and feel her jealousy boiling because of it. She would just have to take part in other places to make up for it. The tween was getting ready for this final week of classes, looking forward to the fun of the yuleball and the break, knowing during that time she wouldn’t have to dedicate any time to boring studying, she just had to first get through the last week of classes, and the weeks of the exam. Mazikeen walked into the transfiguration room and took her usual seat in the class. Her gaze shifted to the front of the room, where the professor was stood. She was hoping they would do something fun that day, she could only assume that all her other classes in the week would be dull. As it turned out they were doing something as the professor began his lecture. She raised her hand at the question and listened as the professor went on to talk about it and how the pieces came alive. With a piece of magic they were about to learn how to do. He showed them the spell, and then went on to describe how it was done on other bits of objects like the frogs. She nodded and took notes of what he was saying but ultimately glad when the lesson was passed over to them and she was able to try it. She took one of the pieces and it took a few attempts but finally she got it to come alive, a little pawn muttering things angrily but smiling at her with a forced expression. Little characters they were. With that the lesson was wrapped up and Mazikeen was able to leave the room. |

Derek loved school. Oh boy did he love it. Even if he wasn’t trying too hard to take things seriously, he was enjoying what it was offering him. He liked sitting with people, he liked joining them in learning about new spells and the like. Derek knew that eventually he would need to focus but he didn’t need to be doing that now. The boy was getting ready for the day, gathering up the different bits and pieces he had accumulated from his classes over the last few weeks. It was an easy task to get ready, he moved about with ease, knowing where he had last placed most of the items. Derek was hoping that this yuleball he’d run into Emilia again, since they had had fun the last two events. He didn’t want to invite her to go with him, but certainly wanted to spend the time with her. He pushed down that thought as he got the last things he would need and headed to class. Derek was sure that they would do work in transfiguration and as a person who liked the spells and transfiguration, he looked forward to it. He made his way into the room and took his usual spot. His eyes drawn to the front as the professor grabbed the attention of the room. They would in fact be doing something, a spell which Derek was very familiar with, he'd played wizard chess a lot, his grandfather had made his own chess set, so Derek knew the spell and he was very excited to try it. He listened to the lecture, watching the piece come to life and wondering if any more chocolate or food related items could be infused with a little magic. The lesson was eventually turned over to them and Derek took the time to do what he needed to. Taking a knight and casting the spell upon it. It took a few tries but eventually the boy got it, feeling very pleased with himself when he did. The lesson had been interesting and involved and Derek left feeling food about the hour wasted in a class. |
