Professor Summers sat by the side of his desk, not as himself, but instead in the form of a large husky, gazing at the students who entered with bright blue eyes. As soon as they had all settled into their seats, the professor padded around to the front of his desk and transformed back into his usual self, standing casually in the center of the room. "An animagus is a witch or wizard who can change himself into an animal as they wish," He started off by saying. "An animagus elects to change into an animal. Learning to be an animagus is a lengthy and extremely tough ordeal to undergo. It takes many years of book and practical learning. As well, one must then register with the Ministry once you've mastered the skill. There are many regulations concerning this type of transfiguration to make sure that wizards and witches are using the skill properly. The Ministry does not want it to be used for the wrong reasons." Aeon paused to ensure he had everyone's attention before he could continue. "When one becomes an animagus, you do not choose your animal form. This is a common misconception. Your true personality is actually what determines your form. If one is noble and brave, a lion is one possibility, but another animal may end up becoming your form instead with similar characteristics. It all varies. You could potentially even simply become a sea cucumber. If you are an untrustworthy person, a slyer animal would be meant for you, like a rat or a snake," He explained, glad that his own form was that of a loyal creature rather than anything sneaky and dishonest. "It is exactly this personalization that some people feel jeopardizes them when they register their animagus form. Wizards from all sides have fought against the registration of animagus. In my opinion, it's an invasion of their privacy as its on public record, which some of you may disagree with, but remember that we live in a world full of limitless possibilities. If someone wanted to do harm in their animagus form, it's not difficult to conceal markings or other telltale signs registered with the Ministry." He took a deep breath, before continuing the lecture. "I would like to briefly discuss the actual animagus form and transfiguration," He stated before he transformed himself back to his dog form. Seconds later, he changed back and was again standing in front of the room. "Notice that I did not use my wand or my voice for the transfiguration. That is a long part of the learning process, but neither is required to transform. The ability to use wandless magic is a benefit. Now, while I am in my animagus form, I am completely able to control my thoughts just like I can in this form, but I have the advantages that dogs have. The only way that you can distinguish an animagus from others of that species is through tell tale signs based on the human form." Professor Summers explained. This was about the briefest look into the transfiguration that anyone could do. It was a shame, but obviously the topic could drone on for years, something he wasn't prepared to do by a longshot. He really felt like stressing how many people try and fail to achieve this. Not to mention the rules, regulations, and strict penalties that could be had by trying to go about the animagi way without permission. But students never cared about that. Not until it was necessary that was, and this was simply an introduction, so why not ooh and ahh them. Professor Summers looked at his watch. They were out of time for today. "Our time is almost up and I apologize for the long lecture. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me about them anytime. In the mean time, you'll have homework to do." Some professors who were animagi used this lesson to allow students to inspect their telltale markings, but Aeon was not one of those professors. It was an invasion of privacy more than anything. For extra Credit: Essay on the Ministry's animagus regulations. Are they needed? Is the register too easy to access? Not easy enough? Any other regulation topic you think is good. Even though Gabriella had a lot going on with her family, she knew she had to put that out of her mind these last few weeks before the exams. She was a little nervous about the Christmas holidays, unsure what she would say to her father when she came face to face with him again. Having heard from her mother for the first time in years put things in perspective for her, but she still felt like her grades were very important too. Gabriella was always interested to see what they would be learning in Transfiguration class, so she was looking forward to this week's lesson as well. The Hufflepuff third year made sure to arrive early at the classroom, finding her seat quickly. She felt relief when it became clear this was a lecture instead of a practical lesson, quickly taking out her parchment and quill to take notes. Professor Summers told them about Animagi, something Gabriella only knew a little bit about. She knew the basics, but was interested in learning more. She noted down how becoming one was a lengthy process with many regulations. It reassured her a little. Rules were never a bad thing, especially when it came to something dangerous. She also noted down how one couldn't choose their Animagus form. That alone made the risk not worth it for her. Gabriella liked knowing things in advance, the surprise would be terrible in her opinion. She took notes on the rest of the lecture, fascinated by the subject. She knew Professor Summers was an Animagus like all her classmates did, so it wasn't as surprise he knew a lot about it. She didn't have any particular questions for him so she left the classroom after writing down the homework. |

Len liked the lessons she had picked as electives and the ones she had kept from her second year. She had taken quiet a lot of subjects, but Len wasn't behind. Lesson five was here and that meant there was only one lesson left before they had exams. Len wasn't very nervous for her exams, she knew if she was going to fail it was going to be her own fault. Halloween had been fun and Len had made good notes of her lessons. She was ready for the exams and hoped she would do as good as last year. Len made a note that she had to do something with Chante this period, she liked the girl and they hadn't seen each other for a while. Transfiguration was awful and Len still wasn't sure if she was going to manage the exam. The lesson today was about was about rules and limitations in transfiguration. People that were animagus sounded amazing, Len knew the professor was one and wondered how hard it was. You didn't have to use a wand so that meant you could always do it. Len wouldn't want to become an animal, it sounded dangerous and way too hard. She took notes and waited for the lesson to end. It wasn't like she wanted to become an animagus, so she didn't even bother that much with this lesson. When the lesson ended Len left the classroom. |

Simon considered that perhaps next year he would maybe try to join the quidditch team. Watching the people play he knew that was one way to win at things. He didn’t like flying and he wasn’t particularly good at it, hence why he hadn’t done it before, but he could give it another shot. It would be good to get more involved, he could spend more time with people, get to know more people but he wasn’t sure he would actually enjoy it, perhaps it would just be good to go see more games, support people by cheering them on. The teen was thinking about quidditch because he’d spent time on the pitch that morning on his run, it had got him thinking about how to do more while in the school. It wasn’t too bad, he was managing a little better and quidditch would be too much work perhaps. The part-veela focused his mind away from quidditch and towards getting ready for the day, getting his things together for it, getting his books and homework and the writing utensils together, getting ready and being sure he had everything before he walked out of the dorm and headed to class. Simon walked into the second to last transfiguration class and hoped they'd be doing something pretty fun, he like the revising and lectures that tended to happen in the last lessons of the semester but he was hopeful for a little more. As it turned out this specific class would be a lecture, which he didn't mind since they were learning about something new, something that he didn't know much about. Animagus was something he'd heard off but since it wasn't something most did, he didn't take an interest in it. The boy wrote down what the professor was saying, liking the pace of this lecture and the information given. He made sure to write down as much of it as he could, not wanting to miss any of the information that was likely to be on the exam at the end of the semester. Since this seemed like enough information to fill two or three question. It certainly also peaked his interest a little. He was drawn to the idea of becoming an animagus. He didn't think he could, he wasn't going to be able to. The lecture was rather long, but it finished up with only a little homework and enough that he was happy to leave the room and immediately go do it. |

Mervyn would have thought that with exams approaching, his professors might go a little easier on him, but alas, the work was only getting harder. It was so unfair! They expected so much from the students, hardly seeming to consider how much they each had on their plate. It was all right for the professors – they only had to teach one subject day in day out. Mervyn was studying what felt like twenty, and none of them was easy. Expecting another lecture before he even sat down, Mervyn prepared his textbook and quill and tucked himself comfortably into his desk. He knew the lectures were important, but that didn't keep him yearning for some more practical work. Still, it was incentive to study hard, so that some day the practical work would be a breeze. He took some notes, wondering what animal his own animagus would be. Something pretty awesome, no doubt. Like a lion. He was noble and brave, after all. Deciding he would definitely have to learn to become an animagus some day, he packed away his things and headed to his next class. |

As the semester progressed and exams were coming nearer, Patrick could feel the pressure among him. It was lots to keep up with and his father reminded him of this as they wrote to each other through the week. He was happy to hear from his father again and how his siblings were doing. Lucie and Louis were getting older and so that meant they weren't babies anymore, making the whole prospect of going home during the holidays a bit more exciting as it meant he didn't have to put up with too much of their crying anymore. They grew up quickly, and Patrick himself did too, but he wanted to live in the moment, agreeing that he should focus more on his studies now that he was getting older. The French packed everything he needed for the day into his backpack before leaving his dormitory and heading to his classes. As Patrick entered the Transfiguration classroom he took his usual seat in the room and proceeded to get out his writing equipment. He liked it when the professor gave them lectures as it really helped with his writing skills which he needed for the exams and he was able to learn how to write faster to get everything down in time. He listened as the professor went over animagi and what was required of them. Yet again, the professor demonstrated his dog form and Patrick watched as he made it look extremely easy. Becoming an animagi would be extremely hard and Patrick was not very interested in becoming one at all. At the end of the lesson Patrick packed everything away before thanking the professor and heading straight to his next class. |
