A warm cup of hot chocolate in her hands she watched as all the fifth years filed in for class, next to each desk sat a large box containing a few ducks each, she watched some students study the box and cracked a small smile 'All will be explained, please take a seat' she asked and waited for everyone to settle before beginning the lesson
'You're not going crazy you can hear quacking, Today we are practicing Vashing Ducks, now you should be very good at making objects vanish by now, so this shouldn't be too difficult for you.' Kida moved around her desk and leaned against it and gestured for the students to grab out their first duck 'If you don't know how to handle a duck let me know and I will get one out for you and show you how, everyone else remember, three tap method and Evanesco' she added reminding them but she doubt they had forgotten already.

Watching and assisting where needed she was happy the class had all advanced quite well over the year. Once everyone was successful she clapped her hands together 'Excellent, try again if you feel the need, if not you're dismissed. Review what we have done this term because next lesson we shall be reviewing everything and I expect you to all be experts'

It was hard to believe for the Hufflepuff Prefect that it was the fifth week of the semester already. He knew the OWL exams wouldn't happen until the second semester, but they were still slowly getting closer. He didn't mind. He had no doubt he would do well on his exams as long as he worked hard. And that was one thing he definitely could do. Tristan never lost sight of his ambitions, calculating every action he did carefully.

He was starting to grow tired of the repetitive lessons in Transfiguration. Were they really learning anything new by vanishing things (and animals) over and over again? He hoped Professor Frost missed the unimpressed look he gave her as he noticed a few ducks next to his desk. He was seriously wondering for a moment if this was some sort of prank. But no, they had to vanish ducks now. It was like this was some sort of test of endurance, like Professor Frost wanted to see how far they would go before calling out the cruelty of these lessons. Tristan forced himself to focus on what he wanted to do after this. He had to get good grades. Taking one of the ducks out, he sighed softly before trying the charm on the animal. It took him a few tries, and he felt a hollow feeling in his chest as he saw the duck vanish before his eyes. He put his wand on the desk and waited for the lesson to be over. What were they going to vanish next week? He didn't really want to know.

Corrine was adamant about not missing class even if Professor Frost wasn't going to amend her lessons. She entered the classroom, her back straight as she took a few steps in and then she froze. That quacking was unmistakeable. Ducks. Corrine glanced around the room at the students who had taken their seats and then threw her hands up. "No, I'm not doing it" she declared, tears in her eyes as she turned around and left the classroom. She'd speak to someone. This was not right. She couldn't fault the others, for some they needed grades that would allow them to move into certain positions. For her, that was the case as well. But, it was the principle. If Transfiguration as punishment wasn't alright for humans, why was it acceptable for animals? How were they any better than the people who had imprisoned people as statues by ridding the world of poor, sweet ducks? Corrine beelined for a bathroom, crying at the thought. After she planned to find someone, the deputy or the headmistress to complain. She didn't mind the work, but they weren't being given a choice.

Questioning Everything | Honeydukes Assistant | fifth year

[justify]Jerara liked not having to ask anyone to the Yuleball, being in a relationship with Ellie meant he didn’t have to. They would go together and he would certainly enjoy himself with her at it, but it removed a lot of the stress he certainly had about asking someone out, the nervousness that came with it and if it would be the right choice in the end. He was also glad it wasn’t something he had to do, when he had a whole load of other things that he wanted to be doing currently. There were books to read, homework to finished, corridors to patrol. All of which took up time, and having to find a date on top of all that, just impossible. The ravenclaw was finishing up a piece of homework for that week which he had admittedly left rather last minute but it was easy, he had put it off because it would take him no time at all. In fact he was doing it as he did other things to prepare for the day, only leaving once he had himself together and the homework done. He didn’t struggle to get all his work done, but certainly there were bits and pieces he left to last minute because he was avoiding them.

Jerara walked into the transfiguration classroom and looked to the front, from where he was sure he could hear quacking, so they'd be making ducks disappear. The boy could sense as he glanced around at the other students in the class that some of them seemed to be having real difficulty in completing the work. He listened to the brief lecture and took a duck from the selection, one girl appeared to run out of the room, and he noticed Tristan seemed to almost look uncertain about what they were about to do. Jerara on the other hand, found it difficult to care about the creature when all he wanted to do was learn the spell. It was cruel to the creature, but it wasn't like there weren't an abundance of ducks and maybe the ducks could be brought back, so he could justify it in his head. He pointed his wand at the creature, tapped three times and said the incantation. He didn't get it on the first go, but got it on the second and he was very proud of himself for managing so. The class was brought to an end and they were able to leave. He had enjoyed the lesson, despite the ducks that had vanished. It had been good.

October had had conflict over keeping or dropping subjects in the past, but she had never experienced anything like this. Dropping every subject she hated had been supposed to be a step towards having more time and energy to devote to doing her best at the things she actually enjoyed. October didn't feel right doing working hard in this class though. Transfiguration had always been one of her favourites, but now it was near impossible to stomach. Last week's lesson had been stomach turning, and she had seriously considered never returning to the class. Dropping a class mid-semester was a small price to pay to keep her morals intact.

But maybe, maybe this week would be different. She would at least turn up. See what they were doing. As soon as she entered the classroom, October's heart dropped into her stomach as she heard the quacking. No. October wasn't as fond of birds as she was of rodents, but now that she had realised the cruel nature of these lessons there was no way she could complete the lesson. She hadn't been the only one to feel this way last week, and to her relief she once again wasn't alone. A huge wave of relief washed over as Corrine spoke up first this time, saying exactly what October was feeling at the pit of her stomach. This was an impossibly cruel thing to ask schoolchildren to do. Hands shaking hard she turned and followed Corrine out of the classroom at once, sickened at the thought of the task they had been given.
